Jacqueline Savard

Dan McClelland

Savard, Jacqueline.jpg

Jacqueline Savard of Tupper Lake, treasured wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away on November 11, 2020 in the loving presence of her husband and children.

Jackie was born on June 6, 1963 in Rome, N.Y. to James and Bernice (Trainor) Murphy. She was the sixth of eight children in her close-knit family.

Jackie grew up in Oneonta, N.Y. and graduated high school in 1981. She went on to nursing school and spent her career providing gentle, attentive and personal care to her patients.

Jackie married the love of her life, David Savard, on St. Patrick’s Day, 1990.

Together, they raised three children and welcomed three precious grandchildren. Jackie loved being a mom and was consistent, caring, patient, and fiercely protective. She was quick to laugh and play and lose herself in the small, joyful moments of motherhood. She loved Christmas and birthdays and any opportunity to gather everyone together around her kitchen table. The births of her grandchildren brought new joy to her life, and she relished every moment she had with them.

Jackie had a generous spirit and a kind heart. Among her siblings, she was the quiet sister, and a devoted one, always maintaining loving relationships in her family. She went to great lengths to bond with her nieces and nephews, making each of them feel treasured and loved. She sent books and cards and forget-me-nots—once even going so far as to overnight fireflies to California to share their beauty. She would arrive for family visits in a camper loaded down with games, crafts, puzzles and snacks, ready to play with the kids all day and laugh with the adults into the night. She never wanted to miss a minute of it.

In her community, Jackie built close relationships with neighbors, friends, coworkers, and especially her in-laws. Roy and Mary Savard and their extended family were among her dearest friends and most important support system—a second family she loved and for whom she was grateful.

Jackie would have traded anything for more time with her family, and she did, foregoing her own comfort over more than two years of surgeries, radiation treatments and chemotherapy in relentless defiance of cancer. She did it so she could have more camping weekends with her children and grandchildren, more holiday dinners and card games, more family reunions and hugs with her siblings, and more quiet days at home with Dave.

Jackie had a gift for giving each person her complete attention, making everyone feel like her favorite. Her death leaves all those favorite people grateful to have known her, heartbroken at her loss, and determined to keep and carry her love.

She is survived by her husband David; her children, James Shea and his fiancé Amanda Wheeler of Albany, Leah Shea of Malta, Corey Savard and his wife Ayumi of Schenectady; and grandchildren Cali Skiff and Charlie Rice. She is also survived by her siblings, Michael Battisti of Binghamton, James (Susan) Murphy of Oneonta, Maryellen Murphy of Oneonta, John (Jana) Murphy of Greensboro, NC, Sandy (Dave) Fitzsimmons of San Jose, CA, Jane Murphy and Steve Simmons of Oneonta, and Megan Murphy of Binghamton.

She will be deeply missed by her loving in-laws and her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She is predeceased by her parents James and Bernice Murphy and her grandson Cooper Skiff.

The family asks that anyone who wishes to make a donation in Jackie’s memory choose a charity that benefits children.

There will be a Celebration of Life in remembrance of Jackie at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary -Stuart Funeral Home, Tupper Lake.

In the words of her son, Larry, “There are many things I wanted to say but the one thing that keeps coming back to me is that Mom was always there. Always. It didn’t matter if she was busy, tired or not feeling well. Nothing we said went unheard or forgotten. You could be in a store with her in June and say you like something and that something you’d forgotten about would be under the tree at Christmas. The love she had for her family and close friends was the driving force of her life, and anything she could do for us was her greatest pleasure. She was the most giving, caring person I know. Mom was always there, and now she isn’t. We can rejoice that she is at peace with our Lord, and that the void left by her passing is filled by a piece of her in the hearts of those that knew and loved her.”

Surrounded by the love of his family, David Patrick Klossner entered eternal life on September, 26th, 2020. Taken from this world far too soon by pancreatic cancer, his light, love and presence will be missed by many. A true family man, David's legacy lives on through his wife, children, and grandchildren, as well as extended family and friends.

Born on July 3, 1961, in Rome, New York, David was the son of Geraldine and Reynold Klossner and grew up in Tupper Lake.

David was an all-star athlete in high school football, went on to play collegiate football at Northwestern Oklahoma University, along with several years with the Watertown Red & Black semi-professional team. During training camp for the Houston Oilers, David experienced a knee injury thus ending his professional football endeavors. David also spent several years as a competitive powerlifter and coach in upstate New York.

Like his father, David was a skilled and talented craftsman, carpenter, and mason, evidenced by everything he did personally and professionally.

Dave+Lake.jpg

David began his career in corrections at the Texas State Prison, then in 1990 he started working at the Federal Corrections Institute (FCI) in Ray Brook, New York.

In 1994, Dave (and his three children from a previous marriage) met his wife, Katie, and shortly after transferred to FCI in Englewood, Colorado. Katie and David were married on December 31, 1996, in Lake Placid.

David and family lived in Castle Rock, Colorado, from 1995 to2012, where David was very active in the community with Castle Rock Players, and as a football coach (Dolphin Youth Football Association, CRFD vs. CRPD Turkey Bowl fundraiser, and Douglas County High School).

In early 2018, Dave’s dream of having a cabin on the lake came true. He spent as much time as possible fishing, kayaking, swimming, and enjoying lake life with family and friends. In the summer of 2019, David and family returned to Castle Rock, Colorado, to be closer to his son, better medical support, and their church family.

When she was seven years old, her family moved to Childwold, where she attended the one room school house. Dorothy continued onto Tupper Lake High School excelling in her studies and joined the girls’ basketball team.

Dorothy married John Clifford LaPlante and the two built a home in Childwold and raised three children. She was a wonderful homemaker. She gardened, baked and was a meticulous seamstress, making clothes for herself and her family. She worked various jobs, cooking at Dumas’ Restaurant and being a cashier at the Grand Union Grocery Store. Eventually she and John purchased and ran the Bartlett Pair Motel.

After their marriage ended in divorce, she remarried Loren Hakes and moved to Massawepie. She continued her education taking college courses at North County Community College studying psychology.

In 1978 she moved to Tupper Lake and she took a job at Sunmount working with profoundly mentally and physically handicapped patients. She genuinely enjoyed caring for those who needed so much love and nursing care. She especially liked working on the unit with the younger patients, some as young as five. On a few occasions, she had even taken them home giving them a special day out.

She worked there for seventeen years until her retirement.

Dorothy loved the quietness of the Adirondack mountains, the rivers and the fresh air. She would walk almost daily, even in the rain. She enjoyed hiking mountains, fishing and canoeing down the Raquette River. During our long winter months she enjoyed snowmobiling, cross country and downhill skiing.

The time spent with her grandchildren were truly the happiest moments in her life. She became a huge part of their lives. Watching them grow, graduating from high school and college. Dorothy had fond memories of teaching them how to drive, celebrating their weddings, and numerous other memorable events. She even got to meet and hug a few of her great grandchildren.

Dorothy fought a very long and arduous battle with dementia. However, as much as she fought, her lungs succumbed to the world’s newest virus, Covid-19.

Dorothy is survived by her three children: Joanne Sparks, David LaPlante and Kathryn (Bill) Amell, ten grandchildren: Derrick (Katie) Olds, Kris Olds, Jennifer Sparks, David LaPlante, Linda Grijalva, Jennifer LaPlante, Joseph LaPlante, Jeremy (Gabrielle) Amell, Tyler Amell and Kristen (Jared) Churco, and 14 great-grandchildren, as well as two sisters: Joan Williams and Beverly Richey.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, son in law- John Sparks II, three brothers- Robert Eggsware, Richard Eggsware, Kenneth Eggsware, and one sister, Marjorie Lewis.

Richard Earl Riley Sr., 72, left our world peacefully on Friday, Sept. 18, 2020, with his loving family by his side. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held on October 2, 2020, at 1p.m. at Gale Cemetery with Rick Wilburn officiating. Services are under the care and direction of Frary-Stuart Funeral Home, Tupper Lake.

He was born in Saranac Lake on Oct. 31, 1947 to Helen and Howard Riley and attended the local schools. The family was active in the Catholic church and Richard was an altar boy. He graduated Saranac Lake High School in 1965 and attended college at Canton ATC before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served from April 1966 to April 1969.

He worked in Burlington, Vermont from June 1969 to September 1971 before enlisting in the U.S. Army once again. He made the Army a career and retired on Jan. 1, 1989. Upon his retirement from the Army, Richard worked for Sunmount DDSO for nine years. Many will remember him as the CSEA union president.

While in the Army, Richard served in Vietnam. He worked for the Department of Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Warfare as well as being a paratrooper instructor. He received many medals and awards during his service. He would tell you that he was on one of the last planes to leave when they “closed the doors,” which should not be surprising to anyone who knew him. He was always the “first one in” and the “last one out.” He feared nothing and made sure that the job was done right.

At the time of his death, he was the chief of the Piercefield Fire Company and a first responder.

Richard leaves behind his wife, Carrie; four sons: Chai of Florida, Steven of Missouri, Michael of Utah and Richard Jr. of Tupper Lake; two stepdaughters: Tiffany Wolf of Colorado and Brittany Proulx of Tupper Lake; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donations in Richard’s memory may be made to the Piercefield Fire Company, 34 Waller St., Piercefield, NY 12973.

Michael A. Graham,70

Dan McClelland

Now there is a bit less music, laughter, tall tales, some true, and good times because of the lost of a really great guy!

Michael (Mike) Arthur Graham, 70, passed away quietly in his home in Mesa, Arizona on Sunday, September 13, 2020. He will be buried next to his wife, Sandra at Green Acres Cemetery in Scottsdale, Arizona on Friday, September 25, 2020. A celebration of life memorial is planned for Saturday, May 15, 2021 COVID permitting.

Michael was born to Arthur and Joan (Martin) Graham of Tupper Lake on May 18, 1950. He was one of the founding members of the local rock and roll band, “The Penthouse Sweet”, with other teenage boys from town. In a flash they became wildly popular in the town, the nearby communities, and in Northern New York.

“The Penthouse Sweet” played danceable jazzy rock and roll music popular in the day. “The Sweet” did not bring rock and roll to Tupper and the Adirondacks but they exploded it onto the scene. “The Sweet”, Michael, and other boys in the band gained instantaneous popularity. In the blink of an eye Michael went from being “out,” not being in the “in crowd”, The Jocks and flashing unruly kids in the State Theater with a flashlight to loads of back-talking to becoming one of the coolest kids in town as one of the front men for “The Sweet” on stage.

It can be strongly argued that “The Penthouse Sweet” was the most popular thing to ever happen to Tupper Lake even more so than Big Tupper Ski Area. Their popularity happened so more quickly and encapsulated almost every teenager and young adult, and yes, some adults too from town and beyond. With all of these large active gatherings of young people, even some with the availability of alcohol, it is remarkably difficult to think of any conflicts that attracted law enforcement.

Even last-minute band performances were well attended by a few hundred kids and were held at the teen center, “The Penthouse Sweet”, of which Michael was the proprietor.

Michael enlisted in the United States Air Force in the spring of 1970 and was stationed at the Davis Monthan Air Force Base, in Tucson Arizona, as a Ballistic Missile Analyst Technician.

He fell in love with the Arizona climate during his service years and moved to Mesa, Arizona where he resided for the past 47 years. He married Sandra Denise Force on February 14, 1988. Sandra died of breast cancer in April 1993. Although Michael never re-married, he enjoyed sharing his life with long-time partner, Carol Murphy (Gilbert, AZ) for the past 26 years.

Michael loved making music and camping on “the property” near Pinedale in the Mogollon Rim of Arizona. He also loved his time in the band and talking about “the good old days.” Michael’s knowledge of television and music trivia was legendary.

A great many people will remember Michael as the happy-go-lucky friend, with an infectious laugh, who always enjoyed meeting friends, old and new. He would effortlessly gather everyone near him, make a plan, and have another GOOD time.

Mike, how can we ever say thank you enough? We raise a cold brewski to you, our dearest friend!

Chuckoo, perform your magic up in Heaven and you will make it a happier place.
