Ray grew up in Tupper Lake and attended Tupper Lake Central High School where he starred on the men’s basketball and football teams, as well as track and field. In 1978, the school invited him to give the commencement address and awarded him the school’s first Distinguished Alumni Award; an award he cherished.

Ray was a caring, thoughtful, and intelligent individual who touched the lives of many. He had a great sense of humor and was well known for his compassion and hard-working nature in all aspects of his life. Dedicated and competitive, Ray always strove to be the best version of himself throughout his life. A prolific writer, he often took the time to reflect on the world around him and put his thoughts to paper.

His time at Colgate University shaped him as a young man. Ray was the first in his family to go to college and, being a tireless worker, he held down several jobs throughout his collegiate career to pay for his education. An excellent athlete, he also played varsity football, basketball, and ran track all 4 years at school.

After graduating from Colgate University in 1961, Ray began his journey in sales and marketing with Reynolds Metals, serving the New York and New Jersey markets. It was the beginning of what would become an impressive 40+ career in the growing field of aerospace and technology.

Recognizing his potential, Alloys Unlimited hired him as vice president in 1965. Ray was a key member of the team when Alloys Unlimited was acquired by Plessey Ltd., one of the UK's largest electronic manufacturers, in 1970. Under his leadership, Arkwin Industries became one of the fastest-growing companies in the aerospace industry. After accomplishing everything he could at Arkwin, Ray and his first wife, Odette moved to California to embark on a new chapter.

In 1994 he was tapped by then CEO of Crane Co., Shell Evans, to become president of Crane's Hydro-Aire Division and their numerous subsidiaries across the US. until his retirement in 2005. During his time at Crane Co., Ray recruited amazing talent, improved efficiencies, and helped oversee tremendous growth and profitability.

One of Ray's favorite trips each year was his annual Father-Son & Son-In-Law Golf Trip where he and his boys enjoyed golf and adventure. Lorraine R. Spengler, 90

Dan McClelland

Lorraine Spengler, a long-time resident of Kickerville Road and Ranney Way, Long Lake, passed away in the early morning hours of November 20. She’d recently celebrated her 90th birthday at a dinner party hosted by family and friends and filled with some of her favorite things—good food, good conversation, and great stories.

Lorraine grew up in Ossining, N.Y., on the grounds of St. John’s Military School, founded by her grandfather, William A. Ranney, Sr., who also founded three local banks. She was the beloved only child of Catherine and William A. Ranney, Jr., who worked alongside his father educating boys and running the banks. When she was five, her grandfather taught her to read the stock tables printed in the newspaper, and he instilled in her the life-long wisdom of saving and turning one dollar into two.

Long Lake loomed large in Lorraine’s life early on. Her father had been brought to Long Lake by his parents to escape a polio epidemic, and he later returned on summer visits with his own family to stay at the Endion Resort, run by the Bissell family. In 1945 when Lorraine was twelve, her father purchased his own lake-front property, which is still in the family and known locally as Camp Point of View.

Lorraine loved it from the start, even though the neglected camp needed lots of work. That first summer she and her mother set out 37 pots to catch the rain that poured in through the roof. With her father in Ossining during the week, she was taught to help manage the property. The lake also became her summer playground: waterskiing with new friends, dancing at the town hall, movie-watching on weekends at the theater run by Ma Becker. At fourteen, she helped Mr. Emerson lay the first phone line down the length of the lake from the back of a boat.

When it was time for high school, her parents sent her to a girls’ boarding school in Massachusetts, as home was still the grounds of a military academy filled with dozens of boys her age or older. At House in the Pines, she made a number of life-long girlfriends, but she’d already begun dating a young man she met in Long Lake while he was working at the Riverdale Boy’s Camp. Her parents liked him, but when she wanted to marry at nineteen, they offered her a trip to Europe instead. She refused, and after a traditional wedding, the young couple spent their honeymoon in Long Lake—working.

Plumley’s was a rustic resort favored by well-to-do city people. Bill was hired to manage it, and Lorraine ran the laundry. One day she was looking over the plans for the house she and Bill planned to build on Kickerville Road when one of the guests approached. “Your walls need to be thicker than your pencil line,” he told her, and the house would never work. He happened to be a highly-regarded architect and offered to draw her a proper set of blueprints—for free.

Lorraine and Bill lived in the basement of that house for several years while Bill built the rest. They started the Hamilton County Lumber Company at the back of their property. Lorraine did all the bookkeeping, until the babies started arriving.

Lorraine and Bill raised four sons. It was a busy life, but a good one. By then, her parents had retired to Long Lake and lived just across the street, down at the lake. Lorraine was known for her thriftiness, but she was generous with her hospitality. She loved cooking for family, for guests, for parties. She was especially fond of deviled eggs and enjoyed a well-made Whiskey Sour. Her French Toast was legendary and her blueberry pancakes much in demand. She never tired of Long Lake: the hummingbirds swooping down to the feeder outside her window, the occasional bear wandering by her back door, the sound of the loons, the deer that she fed all winter long (against the rules). She had strong opinions which she readily shared with the town supervisor, the tax assessor, the Adirondack Parks Agency, and others.

She lived a big life in a small town, but it wasn’t without tragedy. She and Bill lost two of their sons, Scott and Billy, as adults. Husband Bill passed away in 2007.

She is survived by her two younger sons, Jeffrey and Gregg; four grandchildren: Laura, Daniel, Joshua, and Ranney; three great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Marsha Spengler; a niece, Pam McWilliams; and a nephew, Chet Belding.

Her mind was sharp to the end. She almost never told the same story twice, unless, of course, she was asked.

A graveside funeral service in Ossining, N.Y., is pending, and a Celebration of Life will be held in Long Lake next summer.

All of his many, many grand-puppies loved Warren and even though he wasn’t fond of them, they always found their way onto his lap. Warren was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Junior and Wayne Pickering, and his son Keith Pickering.

Warren and Sandra retired to Florida and lived for several decades next door to Sandra’s siblings Robin Yando and Althea and Herbert D'Avignon. Warren continued to enjoy family gatherings and picnics at the beach with all of his extended family. Known for his devotion to family, Warren's love for his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their many friends who adopted him as their “Grandpa” was evident to all who knew him. He was an active member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Knights of Columbus, where he brought his caring and family-oriented nature to the community.

An avid fisherman and hunter, Warren found peace and joy in the great outdoors. Warren shared his love of nature with his extended family by spending time with them at Township 19 Hunting and Recreation Club which he helped found over 50 years ago in the heart of the Adirondacks. In addition to introducing Township 19 to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, he also invited his nieces and nephews who have become club members. Warren loved all of his camp family, both related and chosen. His life was a testament to his belief that family is the greatest treasure.

Visitation with the family will be held on December 5th at 10a.m. with a Memorial Service following at 11a.m. at Lowther Funeral Home in Vero Beach, FL. Internment will be in the spring in Holy Name Cemetery in Tupper Lake, details to follow. Marie Gladys Kraft

Dan McClelland

Marie was an amazing woman. Anyone who had the privilege to have known her would certainly attest to that. She was funny, very hard working, thoughtful and kind.

Marie was born to Leon and Gladys Savard on April 18, 1927 in Tupper Lake. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 26, 2023 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

After graduating from Tupper Lake High School, she worked for a local American Legion Camp, where she met her husband Robert Kraft.

Together they had six children, Jerome Kraft (Brenda Osterhoudt), John Kraft (Diane Parmer and later Amy) who all passed away previously, Michael Kraft (Stella Miller), Randy Kraft (Debra Meridith), Susan Varden (Eric Varden), and Dean Kraft (Lisa Ramsey). She was also a proud grandmother and great grandmother and she traveled to see as many of the new born babies as she could.

The family Marie and Robert started has turned into a large extended family, for which she was the accepted matriarch.

Marie was a supreme care-giver to many, and in many instances sacrificed her own interests with her endeavors to help others. You could always rely on Marie to make the most altruistic support. Of course she would have never admitted to any personal sacrifice, because she was the type of person who felt that it was her responsibility to share her fortunate abilities with others.

Marie was also a master of many trades. She never thought of herself as exceptionally talented but she was. She was an excellent cook and baker. She is one of the only people known who could take a bottle of ketchup, syrup, potatoes, and make an emaculate meal. She also made great sauces, everything had to have a sauce or it would be incomplete.

Marie also mastered a number of other skills such as upholstery, sewing clothes, drapes, tables clothes, etc. She also crafted floral arrangements, tried her hand at landscape and still life painting, was a league bowler, and played bridge with her good friends for over 40 years.

It was only appropriate and with gratitude and privilege that her family was available to care for her in her final days and support her transition from her final journey to a new beginning. Marie was able to live with two of her children during the past six years surrounded by their families. She is now at peace and finally with the many people she lost along the way. She will be sadly missed but you can be assured she will continue to watch over all of those who are part of her everlasting legacy.
