Stuart W. Burnett, 69

Dan McClelland

Burnett, Stuart.jpeg

Stuart W. Burnett, age 69, passed away at his home in Tupper Lake on March 29, 2021.

His battle in recent years with a serious illness related to his exposure to agent orange during the Vietnam War exemplified both his strength and courage.

Stuart was born on June 14, 1951 to Amy Laplante Burnett. At the very young age of 17, Stu joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was sent to Vietnam in 1969.

He finished his tour and returned home. It was then that he met and married the love of his life, Rose Marie (Lamica) Burnett. Together, they had three children: Stuart Jr., Corey and Candice.

Stu spent his life in the service of others. He was a proud husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He worked as an electrician for Sunmount until he retired. Then in his retirement, he enjoyed working at the Lake Eaton Campground and for the St. Alphonsus Church. He was always fixing someone’s roof, plumbing, electrical... anything that needed to be done.

He spent decades as a volunteer for our community. He was a dedicated member of the fire department, the Rescue Squad, and the Dive team for many years. His sense of duty to others and his community was engraved into who he was and how he will be remembered. He was also an avid hunter, coin collector and enjoyed being a Civil War Re-enactor.

Stu was so many things. He was somebody who commanded the room when he entered. He was loud and strong.... he was fierce in both protecting and loving his family... he worked harder than anybody and gave freely to those around him. He was a proud provider and a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a master story teller and had the best laugh. He was kind, honorable, proud and lest we not forget how stubborn he was.

Stuart is survived by his wife Rose, his son Stuart Burnett Jr and his wife Kelly of Tampa, FL, his son Corey and his wife Melissa of Tupper Lake, his daughter Candice and her partner James Dear Jr. of Constable, N.Y. and his daughter, Mariah and her fiancé, Kevin Beaudette of Tupper Lake. He is also survived by many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sisters, brothers and friends that will forever hold him in their hearts.

It was Stu’s wishes to not have a service. Donations can be made in his name to the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad. Stu considered the medical professionals on that squad to be family. His family will forever be thankful for the many times they came to his aid, including the final call in which they fought so hard for him.

Joanne Edith Dechene, 79, of Tupper Lake passed away peacefully on Friday, March 5, 2021 at her home.

She was born in Tupper Lake, moved to Long Island, N.Y. during her early years, and returned to Tupper Lake with her mother Mercile and brother Leonard, at the age of 16 after the loss of her father, Leonard Young.

Joanne attended Holy Ghost Academy and graduated in 1959. Shortly thereafter she met the love of her life, Robbie Dechene, who she married in 1960 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.

Joanne and Robbie were married 60 years. They had three children, David Jr., Patti and John, four grandchildren Kelan, Michael, Quinn and Alyssa and one great grandchild Will.

Joanne cherished her time with her family, especially the grandchildren. Her grandchildren loved spending their summers and holidays with their “Grammie.”

Joanne’s first job was with the Sunshine Store, the local hardware store, but what most people know her for was her loving care of children of Tupper Lake and surrounding areas. Joanne provided child care for a number of children until her retirement in 1994. The children she cared for, now adults with families of their own, to this day talk about their time at Joanne’s, and no matter the holiday or any regular day, stopped by with gifts or just to say hi.

Joanne was also a wonderful cook and enjoyed making special treats for her grandchildren like her chocolate cake with cherry, marshmallow and chocolate drizzle topping. Her evenings consisted of completing crossword puzzles and taking her chances on scratch-off tickets.

She is preceded in death by her father, Leonard Young; her mother Mercile Forkey, and step-father Carlin Forkey; and her brother Leonard Young.

Joanne is survived by her husband, David (Robbie) Dechene of Tupper Lake, her son David Dechene, Jr. of Tupper Lake, her daughter Patti Roddy and spouse Kieran Roddy of Syracuse, N.Y., son John Dechene and spouse Eva Dechene of Lockhart, TX; grandsons Kelan and Michael Roddy of Syracuse, N.Y., granddaughters Victoria (Quinn) Hernandez and spouse Billy Hernandez, and Alyssa Dechene; and great-grandson William Thomas Hernandez of Lockhart, TX.

A mass service will be held St. Alphonsus Holy Name Parish on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 11a.m. Interment services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to High Peaks Hospice or the Tupper Lake Volunteer Ambulance and Emergency, 169 Main St., Tupper Lake, NY 12986.
