Rhoda Chase Curtiss, 85
Rhoda Chase Curtiss, born Rhoda Lee Chase and affectionately known as Pidge, age 85, died due to complications of congestive heart failure on November 26, 2019 in Wilmington, Deleware.
Pidge was born September 26, 1934 in Auburn, N.Y. to Claude Frederick Chase and Florence Harwick Chase, and was raised in the family home in Aurora, N.Y. She graduated from Emily Howland School and later SUNY Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education.
Pidge taught elementary grades in the Ithaca School District from 1955–1981, retiring early, but continued substitute teaching until 1994.
Pidge married Peter Andrew Curtiss in 1955, and together they lived in Etna, N.Y. until 1994, when Peter retired. It was then that the two moved to their second home in Tupper Lake where they owned property since 1966 and enjoyed hiking, canoeing, gardening, bird watching, and preserving the natural history of the Adirondacks.
Keeping busy with “Tupper” projects was always a constant, as they acquired additional camps that they opened to friends and family over the years.
In 2002, Pidge and Peter set down southern roots in Sun City Center, Florida where they lived seasonally, and eventually permanently in 2009. The two were members of the United Community Church in Tupper Lake and United Church of Christ in SCC, FL as well as Rotary, Audubon Society, and many other organizations.
Pidge is survived by younger brother, Robert Chase, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
No matter where Pidge was, she was active in her community and carried with her a genuine, generous spirit. Everyone who knew Pidge will appreciate that the best way to honor her memory is to be kind to neighbors and give back to your community in whatever way possible. Her family hopes you will help carry on her legacy this way and if so moved, make a donation to a charity of your own choosing.
Pidge will be buried beside Peter at Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida.
“Every day is beautiful, only the weather changes.” -handwritten note found on Pidge’s refrigerator.
Kent Adams
Kent A. Adams passed away at his home on December 25, 2019 following a four-year struggle with lung cancer.
Kent was born in 1949 in Tupper Lake to Donald and Harriet (Ingledew) Adams. As a child, Kent developed his love of the outdoors on Tupper Lake and on the slopes of Big Tupper becoming an avid hunter.
Following graduation from Johnson State College in northern VT with a degree in English and philosophy, he taught skiing and worked construction in Vermont until his return to the Adirondacks in 1975.
Kent was born with a sense of adventure and skis on his feet. His years of teaching and ski school experience led to his post as Ski School Director at Bassett Mountain (Paleface) in the 1980’s. As ski business is seasonal, he developed skills in construction, finish carpentry, and housing rehabilitation to keep him close to the winter action. His varied projects included working on the foundation of the Adirondack Museum (Adirondack Experience), setting lift towers on Whiteface, and crafting the finish carpentry of the Mirror Lake Inn library. These experiences all prepared him for his dream job with the Housing Assistance Program of Essex County or HAPEC. He retired seeking more adventures in 2016.
Ever curious, Kent enjoyed spending time in the woods, road trips on his Harley Davidson, drone flying, fine Milwaukee macro brews, reading, and discussing world and national politics with anyone who would give him a good argument.
Kent is survived by his wife, Sarah, his daughters, Phoebe Stapleton (Drue) and Elizabeth Johnson (Steve), son, Samuel; grandchildren, Noah and Ryenne Stapleton, and Bailey Johnson; his sister, Beth McKenna (Mike) and his mother, Harriet Adams. He leaves behind six nieces and nephews and their children. Kent was predeceased by his father, Donald Adams.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center and High Peaks Hospice for their thoughtful care. David’s heart and soul lay in being a sportsman. He was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman, often being called a “whisperer” in these activities. He also loved gardening and nurturing wildlife, such as his broken-winged goose, his happy little squirrels, and his various songbirds which he could identify by sight and sound.
David is survived by his wife, Colleen (Indiana); two step-sons Michael and James Fry (Indiana); 2 daughters, Jessica (Central Square) and LeAnn (North Carolina); his mother, Joanne (Tupper Lake); 3 brothers, Timothy (Cato), John (Parish), and James (Hastings/Tupper Lake); 2 sisters, Anne (Michaelis) (North Volney), and Catherine (Roberts) (Caughdenoy); several nieces, nephews, and cousins, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Calling hours and funeral service announcements to come.
