Jeanne Mulvana Parent, 91

Dan McClelland

obit jeanne parent.jpg

Jeanne Mulvana Parent, age 91 passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at her Moira home surrounded by her family.

Jeanne was born March 28, 1928, the daughter of Edward and Grace (Mayville) Savage, in Bombay, New York. She was a 1945 graduate of Bombay High School. Jeanne was employed for a short time at ALCOA in Massena, New York and then worked for Frank Crowley, postmaster of the Bombay Post Office, for two years.

On July 4, 1950 Jeanne married the love of her life, Joseph H. Mulvana, at St. Patrick's Church in Hogansburg, New York officiated by Msgr. Walter Funke. Together they lived in Bombay, New York until 1953 while Jeanne worked at Roy Brown's and F.L. Cross' grocery stores. They then moved to Rooseveltown and resided there for two years.

In April 1955, Jeanne and Joe purchased a three-quarter acre of land at the end of the Savage Road in Moira for $800, assured by her 11 brothers, sisters and Grandpa Savage that, “We will help you make this two-story dilapidated structure into a home.” And that is exactly what they did, and Jeanne and Joe then began crafting a humble and modest life for themselves and their eight children. Jeanne remained in that dwelling her entire life.

In 1970, Jeanne was elected Moira town tax collector, a position which she retained for 36 years. She also worked as a clerk for the Town of Moira for 10 years. Jeanne taught religious instruction for St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brushton, and served as a monitor at Brushton-Moira Central School.

Joe, her loving husband and father of her eight children, predeceased her on February 17, 1968.

On April 4, 1974, she was united in marriage to Ray W. Phillips, Sr., at St. Mary's Church, Brushton officiated by Rev. Albert Richardson. Ray predeceased her on May 10, 1984.

On November 28, 1997 she married Carlton Parent at St. Mary's Church in Brushton, New York officiated by Rev. Alfred Fish. Carlton predeceased her on September 9, 2008.

In addition to her three husbands, she was predeceased on October 22, 1975 by her 22 year old daughter, Martha Jeanne Mulvana, her parents, and her 11 sisters and brothers: Beatrice Duemars, Bernice Prashaw, Hazel Peets, Dorothy Derouchie, Elsie Peets, Harold, Neil,Victor, Gerald, Wayne, and Jack Savage.

Jeanne is survived by her seven children and their spouses: Steve Mulvana, Bombay, Laura Mulvana (Butch) Goodrow, St. Regis Falls, Jim and Cindie Mulvana, Tupper Lake, Dan and Bobbi Mulvana, Homer, William and Nina Mulvana, Moira, Jane Mulvana (Michael) Sevey, Moira, and Suzanne Mulvana (Kent) Niles, Northern West Chazy, 22 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by six stepchildren: Ray Jr., and David Phillips, Wayne, Donald, Dale, and Raymond Parent. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Ellen Savage, Moira, and Korleen Savage, Malone, several nieces and nephews.

Over the course of her life, Jeanne never turned down a friendly competitive game of SkipBo, dice, or her favorite card game, 500. On the rare occasion she had downtime, she could often be found keeping up with her daily crossword puzzles. But, her most treasured pastimes were all the beautiful memories spent with her family.

Jeanne was a very spiritual woman, never allowing her strong Catholic faith to waver. She firmly believed the world would be an even better place if everyone prayed the Rosary, and she continued to promote daily recitation of the Rosary to all of her family.

Jeanne will be fondly remembered for her outstanding homemade bread, most times yielding 35 loaves at a time. Jeanne was also excited when it came time to process 35 quarts of her special dill pickle recipe.

Deserving much praise and gratefulness, and holding a special place in her heart is her grandson and close confidant, Aaron Mulvana, who assisted her with anything she needed and was a great pillar of strength and support to her for almost 11 years.

Remembrances in her memory may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Brushton, the Moira Rescue Squad, North Country Home Services, and/or Hospice of the North Country.

Calling hours will be held at Flint Funeral Home on Wednesday July 17, 2019 from 4-7 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Brushton, New York on Thursday July 18, 2019 at 11 AM. Burial will commence within the parish cemetery.

Edward Lewis Motteram, Jr., 71

Dan McClelland

Edward Lewis Motteram, Jr. (Gus) age 71, died peacefully on May 22, 2019 at 5:58 p.m. with his heartbroken wife Jo-Anne (Moody) holding his hand and his large and loving family surrounding him. His death followed a very brief illness. The world lost a bit of its brightness when he passed into the golden rain of his heavenly and eternal home.

He was born September 29, 1947, in Homestead, PA and was the oldest son of Edward L. Motteram Sr. and Alberta Naomi Owens. He made his home in Richardson, TX and Childwold, N.Y.

Ed proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1973, when he was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant, after serving as an instrument instructor for new pilots. After his discharge he returned to college and completed his Bachelors in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington. He worked briefly at Texas Instruments and Gardner Denver.

He retired in June of 2013 from Flowtronix/Xylem where he worked for many years as a sales engineer, selling and designing pumps for irrigation and fire suppression systems. He traveled extensively throughout the U.S. for his job and was fortunate enough to play golf at some of the country’s premier courses as a perk of his work.

Ed was an avid reader of the Bible, and had an amazing memory for scripture. He enjoyed reading about WWII and could wax on for hours about the personalities and strategies of the military leaders of the time.

Ed also was a model railroader, designing track layouts and towns around his N-scale setup. He spent many hours in his “man cave”, always changing and perfecting the details. He also received his pilot’s license and spent many hours in the air.

After his marriage to Jo-Anne (Moody) in 2014 they went on many “adventures” across our great country, from Yellowstone National Park to the Grand Canyon and the Adirondacks of New York State and many places in between. They spent many hours driving and observing the beauty of God’s works on earth and had recently purchased a vacation home in Childwold.

Edward is survived by his loving wife, Jo-Anne, of Richardson, Texas as well as one brother, David Motteram and wife Gina of Rowlett, TX; sisters Judith Griffin (Bill) of Dallas, Texas; Jeanne (Charles) Stevens of Stratham, GA; Ellen (David) Gehl of Houston, TX; and Jane (Steve) Sheffler of Rowlett, TX. Ed was an amazing “Uncle Gus” to his many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and “Grandpa Ed” to Katherine Walker, and William, Ellie and Tommy Slaughter. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers William and Thomas Motteram.

Five years ago Ed acquired a bonus family when he married Jo-Anne. He was loved greatly by her son David Slaughter and wife Tanya as well as her daughter Becky Friedman and husband Jerry. He also gained another large family with Jo-Anne’s eight siblings who embraced him as their own.

Ed was a family man from the start to the very end. His best memories were from family reunions, holiday gatherings and just good times with his siblings and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Network of Community Ministries in Richardson, Texas or the 24 Hour Club in Dallas, Texas. Internment will be at DFW National Cemetery at a later date.

Peter LaMere Sr.

Dan McClelland

Obit Pic_2.jpg

Peter Allen LaMere Sr. passed away in Sebring, Florida on Wednesday April 24, 2019.

True to character, he stubbornly fought through a combination of illnesses that would easily kill a less determined man. He was tough and determined through and through, from his days being late for school checking beaver traps and working and hunting with his brothers in the Adirondacks.

He carried that attitude serving as a military policeman in Vietnam, 16 years as a police officer across all of Alaska and eventually returning to Tupper Lake for 18 years in various law enforcement roles.

He was married to his high school sweetheart, Jean Prenoveau, for 51 years (rounding by two months).

He is survived by his daughter Tracy Sparks, who followed him into public service, his son Pete Jr., who followed him into the Army, and grandchildren Brandon (regrettably got his hairline), Alexis (got his abrasive attitude), Trevor (got his love for fishing), and Parker (looks just like him).

His late parents Fred and Beverly built the Trail's End complex in Tupper Lake and he is survived by siblings Ruth, Bob, Patricia, Fred, and Anne.

For the many who knew Pete LaMere, he and the family fondly remember all the love, support, and time spent with friends (and enemies) in the community.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 15 at the Presbyterian Cemetery with a gathering at the VFW to follow.

Phyllis was predeceased by her husband of 20 years, Myron A. Palmer, in November of 1987, her son Scott Palmer in January of 2003 and her life partner of 30 years, Hamilton A. Ferry in August of 2018.

Phyllis's life had two uniquely special chapters. She graduated, got a job, fell in love and became a wife and a mother. They had a lot of good times and many hard times. Through it all, she was the guiding light for her children and someone they could always count on. She was always there, unwavering in her love and support for her family. Even through the worst adversity life could send her way she always found a way to get through it.

In her darkest days, she once again found the light. That light was Hamilton Ferry and the start of the second chapter of her life. Phyllis and Ham completed each other. They traveled the country in his tractor-trailer creating memories and forming a love that lasted over 30 years. When these adventures were done they moved to the Adirondacks and together opened Ham's Mini Mart at Sevey's Corners. Yet another adventure they shared. Phyllis loved her life but she loved her kids and grandkids even more. They had an unbreakable bond and her grandkids absolutely adored her. Phyllis will always be remembered as the light in our lives.

On the morning of March 26, 2019, Martha passed away after a year-long battle with uterine cancer, surrounded by her sisters and daughter, in the loving care of St. Peter’s Hospital.

Born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, January 10, 1954, Martha grew up in Tupper Lake.

She was the second child of Jean M. Schutt and William C. Johnson Jr. Shortly after her birth, Jean passed and William’s second wife, Jane Bobak adopted Martha and her sister Sandra.

Martha held many extraordinary talents including cooking, sewing, quilting, beading, gardening and skiing. She served on ski patrol for over twenty years, forging everlasting friendships during that time. After her daughter Elena was born, Martha earned her Associate's degree and began her second career as an x-ray technician.

After living and working in the Rutland, Vermont and North Woodstock, N.H. areas, Martha settled to Helena, Montana, in 1997, where she worked for Great Divide Ski Area and Gates of the Mountains, which remained special places through the years.

Shortly after moving to Helena, Martha started work as an x-ray technician at Helena Urgent Care, and later Helena Orthopedic Clinic.

Martha’s work ethic was remarkable, and she especially enjoyed cooking for special events at the clinic.

Martha was an incredibly selfless, devoted and loving mother and friend. Her quick-witted sense of humor remained intact until the end, and she will be cherished and missed by many.

Martha was preceded in death by her father, William C. Johnson Jr.;  mother, Jean M. Schutt, and stepmother, Jane O. Bobak.

Martha is survived by her daughter Elena C. Johnson; siblings Lois, Lyndon (companion Jodi), and Peter (wife Marj) Johnson and Sandra Olsen (husband Bill); nephew Robert and wife Erin Farris-Olsen and their children William Tupper and Benjamin August; and nieces and nephews Kathleen, Lucas and Tyler, and Caleb, Samantha and Jeremy Johnson as well as numerous great nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles.

Memorial donations may be made to Helena Food Share, Helena YWCA, Helena 6th Ward Garden Park and The Friendship Center.

A memorial service and reception will be held in Tupper Lake later in the year. Please send family condolences and memories to www.helenafunerals.com.
