Jean Anne Gionet Donah

Dan McClelland

Jean Anne Gionet Donah died Sunday, May 26, 2024, just ten days after her 86th birthday. She lived the last years of her life bravely and lovingly with her husband, while being cared for at home in Tupper Lake by her family and a network of care providers who became like family. Her life was built on faith, family, friendship, and a community spirit.

Jean was born May 16, 1938, in Tupper Lake, New York, the daughter of Joseph Ernest Gionet and Alma Turcotte Gionet.

She graduated from Holy Ghost Academy in 1956 and what was then known as Canton Agricultural and Technical College in 1958. It was at Canton ATC where she met the love of her life, Donald W. Donah. They were married on July 12, 1958, in St. Alphonsus Church in her hometown of Tupper Lake.

Don and Jean started their first business venture in the Union Block Building, Don’s Men’s Shop with the help of her loving father, Ernie. Their business evolved in that location. The Montgomery Ward Catalog Store was a successful venture, winning sales agency of the year in 1982. Then in 1985, it became a sales agency for J.C. Penney Co.

Jean was the face of the franchise, while Don taught business math courses at Tupper Lake High School. They were continually active in the Tupper Lake community, supporting many organizations with a wide network of friends.

Through the years, while raising her family, Jean loved to ski in the winter, play golf, enjoy the lakes in the summer, and enjoy a game of bridge all year round. She and Don volunteered at The Wild Center and were active members of St. Alphonsus Parish, the Tupper Lake Golf Club, and the Big Tupper Courtesy Patrol.

Once they retired in 2003, Jean and Don spent a month every year in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina making new friends. She always shared from her heart. She gave her love of reading to her son Michael, her ambitious spirit to her youngest, Rick, and her sense of humor to her son James.

Jean is survived by her husband of 65 years, Donald Donah, and three sons: Michael and Rick, both of Tupper Lake, and James of Albany. A granddaughter, Nicole Donah of Albany, a grandson Luke Donah and his wife of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a great grandson named Beaux; a sister, Helen Schmidling of Sisters, Oregon; nieces Jodie McLeod of Colorado and Melissa Gionet of New Zealand; a sister-in-law, Catherine Pillar of Pottstown, PA; nieces Patti and Robin, also Angie Donah, all of the Potsdam area; stepbrothers Gary and David Barnett and partner Molly Sherwin of Albany.

In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her brother Daniel and sister-in-law Margaret Gionet of Keeseville, N.Y. and three of their children, Amy, Chris and Mary; a stepsister Dana (Barnett) and Stan Gilligan of Malone, N.Y.; brother-in-law Robert and Sally Donah, their son Christopher Donah, Clarence Donah, and sister-in-law Dorothy (Charles) McArthur.

In recent years, as she struggled through the haze of dementia, she would make sure her husband Don, three sons, and health aides knew that they were appreciated with a simple “I love you”.

Her beautiful soul was celebrated on Friday, May 31st, 2024, at Saint Alphonsus Church at 1p.m. There were no calling hours, but a celebration of her life was held at the Tupper Lake Country Club from 2p.m. to 5p.m., the very same venue that hosted her wedding reception over 65 years ago.

Contributions can be sent in her honor to the Tupper Lake Vol. Ambulance and Emergency Squad, Inc. , PO Box 901, Tupper Lake, NY 12986.

Harry John Wilber, 75

Dan McClelland

Harry J. Wilber, age 75, passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon March 9, 2024, at Adirondack Medical Center, Saranac Lake after brief illnesses.

For the last 15 years, he suffered chronic neurological diseases from his Vietnam Era military service. His loving family and extended support team were with him for his hard fought but long winless battle.

He was born on Memorial Day, May 30, 1948, in Syracuse, a son of the late Everett and Henrietta (Yettie Visser) Wilber. He grew up as Harry John (given name) in Kirkville, N.Y. and graduated from East Syracuse-Minoa School District in 1966. His 1968 graduation from The Ranger School in Wanakena was the start of his forestry profession.

On August 17, 1968, he married his high-school sweetheart Joanne Sitnik in East Syracuse. They moved to Corvallis, Oregon and he continued forestry learning at Oregon State University, taking advantage of internships. In the summer of 1969, he was a big tree Chocker Setter by day at Mt. St. Helen’s in Washington and Fire Watchman 24/7 on the logging sites of Weyerhauser Co. He worked on survey Crews and as a wildland firefighter for the US Forest Service 1970 in Oregon, California, and Washington with an interest in smoke jumping.

The 1969 Vietnam Draft Lottery afforded him a short-cut choice and he became an “All the Way” paratrooper in the Army’s 82nd Airborne “All-American” Division 1970 – 1972.

Upon discharge, he continued his forestry education graduating in 1977 from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University.

A summer internship brought him to the woodlands of International Paper in Tupper Lake. His dream permanent job became a reality and the family moved to Tupper Lake in 1978. An opportunity to join the LandVest Timberland Division to do forest management, consulting, and timberland real estate sales for 24 years concluded his forester career in 2009. His semi-retirement work was at Tupper Lake Central School District as a custodian and bus driver, ending due to his chronic military diseases.

He took part in sports, activities, and hobbies over the years. He was playing football, softball, and doing Judo in his thirties, golfing last year, and bowling recently. He was a devoted hockey coach for Tupper Lake Hockey and the summer Seaway Valley Canadian Program for over seven years.

Stump or “1st Gear” Harry was a founding board member of the Tupper Lake Woodsman Association in 1980 that brought back the Tupper Lake Woodsmen’s Days that year. He was a proud member of the Raquette River 8, that did the Long Lake to Tupper paddle on the weekend after Labor for over 20 years, the Tupper Lake Lion’s Club and Chapter 1024 Woodsmen Life member. He was a Life Member of all his College Alumni Associations, New York State Society of American Foresters, Veteran DAV, American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars and more.

The Bear Brook Hunting Club and Camp days with the Reichel and Russell private hunting areas extended his time in the woods. In the last few years, his vegetable gardening and RV camping gave him time to be outdoors.

His truest passion was traveling and attending NASCAR races all over America, watching them on TV, and race talking. He was an avid car and truck collector and so enjoyed it when people wanted to talk to him about his ride of the day.

Harry’s family was his pride and joy. Doing anything with his grandchildren or watching them in school activities, sports or community events filled him with delight.

Surviving are his wife, Joanne (Sitnik), daughter, Katrina (Gary) Audet of Lawrenceville, NJ, son, Scott of Tupper Lake, grandchildren: Briana and Alexis Audet of Lawrenceville, N.J., Lily and Aiden Wilber of Tupper Lake, pets Suki and Jack, and nephews: Cassie Sitnik of Kirkville, Collin (Mackenzie) Russell of East Syracuse, and Tyler (Paula) Russell of Commack. Homes “Sonny” Burgoyne, 82

Dan McClelland

Homer (Sonny) Louis Burgoyne Jr., most recently of Tupper Lake, passed away on May 11, 2024 at the age of 82.

He was born on May 30, 1941 to Lusha (Farnham) and Homer Louis Burgoyne Sr. of Lake

Placid. Sonny attended Lake Placid School and began his music career while still in high school as a singer, self-taught guitarist and keyboard player.

From the mid-1950s through the 1980s, he performed with nearly every musician in the North Country and most of his family members. He made professional appearances throughout Florida, Virginia and the Carolinas, and continued to draw in fans whenever he visited the Tri-lakes, until he became partially paralyzed as the result of a fall in 2014.

Besides being a life-long musician, Sonny managed several food and beverage businesses over the years. He worked with the physically and developmentally challenged and did apartment building maintenance. He also loved picking up older model cars to repair and refurbish, often re-selling them or gifting them to his kids. A true charmer until the day he died, Sonny was blessed to marry three beautiful ladies during his lifetime, whom he continued to praise and speak well of long after their marriages ended.

As the Journey song says, “Lovin' a music man ain't always what it's supposed to be.” Wives Vicky (Vondell) and Judy (Durham) gave him four of his five children. Wife, Cindy (Brantley) led him to the church, where he found yet another kind of family.

After fracturing his neck in 2014, doctors predicted Sonny would never be able to walk and take care of himself. With stubborn determination, he proved them wrong. Thanks to the love and dedication of son Randy and daughter-in-law Rita Burgoyne and the extended Boushie clan in Tupper Lake; dad, grandpa, Sonny had a comfortable home and a measure of independence for the last eight years of his life, something for which he was eternally grateful.

Sonny is predeceased by his parents, sister Jackie Koller, brothers Garry and Russell Burgoyne, his first wife Victoria (Vondell, Willett, Whittemore) and brother in-law and bandmate, Howard Daby.

He is survived by sister Sharon Daby of Lake Placid, brother Stanley Burgoyne (Debbie Moyer) of Satsuma, Florida; ex-wives Judy Durham of St. Augustine, Florida and Cynthia Brantley of Franklin, North Carolina; children: Meachele Manchester (Mike Sardella) of Saranac Lake, Buddy (Barbie) Burgoyne of Trenton, Florida, Randy (Rita) Burgoyne of Tupper Lake, and Brad Driggers (Sierra Hostetter) and Brent Burgoyne (Jennifer Civitillo) of St. Augustine, Florida; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Sonny’s ashes will join those of his father and brothers on Mount Joe, near the site of their old hunting cabin.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Mercy Living Center in Tupper Lake for their compassionate care of dad and us during the final weeks of his life.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church Street, Saranac Lake, N.Y. 12983. At Sonny’s request, there will be no calling hours. All funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. A celebration of his life for friends and family members will be held on Sunday, June 2 from 2pm-6pm at the Saranac Lake Elks Club.

Family and friends wishing to remember Homer “Sonny” L. Burgoyne, may make memorial contributions to the Tupper Lake Food Pantry in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. Terry J. Lemieux

Dan McClelland

Terrance James Lemieux passed away on December 10, 2023. He hated to be called that and is probably swearing at us right now for including his real name.

Terry was born on September 6, 1948 to James and Beatrice (Caron) Lemieux. He was born and raised in Niagara Falls, N.Y. He graduated from LaSalle Senior High School in 1966 and then Erie County Community College with a degree in Police Science. In the 1990s he relocated to Tupper Lake.

He liked four letter words as much as he liked his cigarettes and whiskey, and trust us, he ran the 3/30 Lodge with his sister so he could make those things important to his job. He left behind some words of wisdom like it was harder in his time because he had to walk to school in a blizzard uphill both ways and the best place for us to play was in traffic.

Terry was an avid toy train collector and took part in many train shows with different organizations. If you find a bright orange Hooker Chemical tanker car, look for TJL in the Freight markings. Chances are he made that one. He was the biggest Buffalo Bills fan and an even bigger Buffalo Sabres fan. His girls will miss the Sunday conversation after each Bills game to complain or rejoice, depending on the week.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Lynda McGiboney Herr. He was survived by his two daughters, Laura Lemieux Mendoza (Richard) of Waco, Texas, and Aimee Holland (Gary) of Niagara Falls, NY. He had five grandchildren- Alejandro, Antonio and Teresa Mendoza and Darren and Kyle Holland and two great granddaughters, Alexa and Crystal Holland. He also leaves behind three nieces and a great nieces and great nephews. Special thanks to Cheryl McGiboney for keeping an eye on him to keep him out of trouble and putting up with his nonsense.

His life will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake on May 18th at 11a.m. and graveside service to follow. Anyone wanting to celebrate Terry is welcome to join the family for a drink after that at P-2's Irish Pub.

Roger Peets, 80

Dan McClelland

Roger Henry Peets, 80, long-time resident of Tupper Lake, died on May 1, 2024 at CVPH Hospital in Plattsburgh, with members of his family by his side. He had been a resident of Champlain Valley Senior Community (CVSC) in Willsboro, N.Y. in recent years.

Born on May 19,1943, Roger graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1961. His military service was in the United States Navy and he was very active in the Tupper Lake VFW. He worked at Sunmount until his retirement.

Roger married Denise Hachey on July 30, 1988. Roger and Denise were known for great fun and delicious food (especially chicken on the grill). One of the grandchildrens' favorites was grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that Grampy made for them. He used to take them to and from Sunday School and sometimes they would fool him by saying they had it, but they were just getting him to take them to McDonalds for breakfast.

Roger delighted in sharing jokes he saw on the internet. He also shared a great many family photographs. Roger never wanted to leave a road untraveled. He would try to convince anyone riding with him to go on any unknown byroad. This continued when his wife passed away and lasted until he moved to CVSC. He was a quiet, easy-going person who attended dinners and parties, but never lingered. He always had to be on the go.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Denise (Hachey) Peets; his mother, Rena (Papin) Peets and his father, Henry Peets; his brother, Clarence (Pete) Peets and his sister, Barbara ((June) Charland,

He will be dearly missed by his children, David (Allyson) Peets of St. Regis Falls, NY, Maureen Foti of Tupper Lake, NY, Todd Peets of Fulton, NY and Kevin Hachey of Kenosha, WI; his sister, Nancy Wituszynski of MA; his brother, Ben Peets of MN; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 17 at 1p.m. at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake followed by a gathering at the VFW.
