Donald Skiff

Don Skiff, age 77, passed away peacefully on April 4,2024 with family by his side. Don had been in failing health for several years.
Born September 23,1946 in Tupper Lake, NY, he was the son of the late Jay Skiff and Agnes Tetreault Skiff. Don graduated from Tupper Lake High School 1964. After graduation, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1968 from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa.

Immediately after graduation, Don accepted a position at Parsons as a Business Program instructor. During his time there he was also the Director of Living Centers, Assistant Dean of Men, Assistant Director of Testing and Research and nominated for Outstanding Young Men of America in 1971.

In 1972 Don returned to his beloved Tupper Lake and became an Accountant for the Franklin Dairy and Altamont Milk and Ice Cream Company. He remained in this position until 1977 when he decided to further his education with a master’s degree in business administration at Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio, which he completed in 1979.

After graduating, Don accepted a position as an Associate Professor, Division of Business, at Misericordia University in Dallas, PA. He held positions on many boards including Secretary and Chairperson of the Faculty Senate and consultant to College Misericordia as well as several local businesses regarding personal computer purchase, use and training. He was tenured and promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor in 1982 and elected by the Board of Trustees as “Teacher of the Year” in 1993.

Don was also very active in his community. He was the Past Board Member of the Child Development Council in Wilkes Barre, PA, President and founding member of the Wyoming Valley Chapter of the Stepfamily Association of America and Founding member and Executive Secretary of the Pennsylvania Society of Teaching Scholars, Harrisburg, PA. Don retired in 2009 after 30 successful years at Misericordia.

In his spare time, he enjoyed working on computers and photography. His favorite time was spent with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Donnie Skiff.

Surviving are his loving daughter, Dawn Pollick of Glen Lyon; grandchildren, Tiana Yevich (Billy) and Caven Pollick of Mocanaqua, PA, great grandchildren, Elena and Caleb Yevich; brothers and sisters, Jay A Skiff, Tupper Lake, NY, Steven Skiff, Tupper Lake, NY, Pam Skiff, Cumberland, MD, Pat Bruszewski (Roger), Lancaster, PA, Joan Stuart (Shawn), of Tupper Lake, NY, and Jean Wilcox, Marietta, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joseph Clement Koch, Jr.

Fortified with the Sacraments of our Holy Mother Church, Joe Koch passed away after a sudden illness in his home town of Concord, NC.

Formerly of Tupper Lake, Joe was a 1963 graduate of Holy Ghost Academy, attended the University of Notre Dame, served in the U.S. Army when he was awarded the VietNam Service Medal, the VietNam Campaign Medal, and the Bronze Star.

Joe graduated from Purdue University and began his corporate career with US Steel. After many years, he chose to pursue a degree in education and taught at the New Jersey Youth Challenge Academy at Ft Dix, NJ. Upon retirement, Joe moved to Concord, NC.

Joe is survived by his wife Keiko, his daughter Kristin Benokraitis (Andrius) of Durham, NC, his son Greg of Washington, DC, his adored grandson Austin Benokraitis, his sisters Christine Crowe (Myles) of Glen, NH, and Aimee Page (Bob) of Moultonborough, NH. Joe was predeceased by his parents Dr. & Mrs. Joseph Koch and an infant brother Frederick.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. James the Greater Church in Concord on April 27 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at a later date.

Gary Lee LaFountain, 76

Gary Lee LaFountain, 76, passed away on December 30, 2023 at his home, Liberty ARC in Amsterdam, N.Y., with his loving family and staff by his side.

Gary was born December 3, 1947 in Tupper Lake, the son of Frederick and Louise (Lois) Lamica LaFountain. For many years, Gary also lived at the Adirondack ARC in Tupper Lake and worked at NorthStar Industries in Saranac Lake, NY until his retirement.

Gary had a nice smile and was always friendly; he loved his family, always spending time with them. He enjoyed collecting wristwatches and clocks, music, bingo and was a member of the Moose Lodge in Tupper Lake.

Gary was predeceased by his parents and brother, Terry Lynn LaFountain. He is survived by his four sisters, Karolyn (Roy) Benware of Piercefield, NY Rhonda (John) Przybycien of Amsterdam, NY, Debra (Mark) Cummins of Walton Hill, OH and Karla (Terry) Williams of Easley, SC. Gary is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Frary Funeral Home; there will be a funeral mass for Gary on May 18, 2024 at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake at 11AM followed by a graveside service at Holy Name Cemetery in Tupper Lake.

Simone Marie Vachon

With much sadness, we announce the passing of our dearly loved mother, Simone Marie Vachon. Simone passed from this world peacefully in her sleep Easter morning March 31th, 2024 at her home at Don Smith's Apartments in Tupper Lake, NY.

Simone was born March 13th, 1933 in Sherbrook, Quebec, Canada. She married Rosaire Vachon on October 6th, 1951 and both became United States citizens on April 23rd, 1963. Simone was employed at Mercy General Hospital for more than 40 years. She was also a foster grandparent at L. P. Quinn Elementary School in Tupper Lake and was an active member of St. Alphonsus Church.

She enjoyed cross-country skiing, trips and bingo with her friends at the Adult Center, knitting and doing crossword puzzles. Simone also enjoyed riding her three-wheeled bike with her friend Paul, who is no longer with us. She especially loved watching wrestling and Judge Judy on television.

Preceded in death are her parents, George and Valerie LaChance, her husband Rosiare, sons Robert and a stillborn baby she always kept close to her heart.

Simone is survived by her three children Norman and Kathy Vachon, Louise Amell and companion Vincent Coccia and Richard and Lori Vachon. Her presence will be missed by her grandchildren, Shannon Beaudette, Jamie Amell and companion Chris Segard, Amanda Amell and companion Nate Lewis, Brandon and Kyle Vachon and Ashley Law. Simone was also blessed with great-grandchildren Chris and Madison Vachon, Lexi and Natalie Staves and great-great-grandchildren Aadya and Roman Vachon and Rydel Saville. Simone is also survived by her sister Rollande LaChance.

Calling hours will be held on April 12, 2024 from noon to 2p.m. at the Frary Funeral Home in Tupper Lake, NY. A Catholic Mass will be held for Simone on the same day, at 2:30pm at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake, NY. Friends and family are invited to gather at Don Smith's Community Room after the church service, burial will take place at a later date in May.

Elizabeth Ann Edwards, 88

Elizabeth Ann Edwards, 88, of Tupper Lake passed away on Saturday March 23rd, 2024 at her home, surrounded by loved ones.

Arrangements are under the care of Frary Funeral Home, Tupper Lake.
Born on January 5th, 1936 in Tupper Lake, she was the daughter of Harold Bradley and Hazel (Barber) Bradley. She was affectionately known by all as Betty.

She attended Holy Ghost Academy in Tupper Lake, graduating in 1954. On April 21st, 1956, she married Michael Philip Edwards and together they raised a family
of four boys and four girls. Betty was all about family and was selfless in all
things.

In addition to being a mother to many, she was a Cub Scout Den Leader, a constant volunteer for the Tupper Lake Hockey Association, a loud hockey mom and, later in life, a Home Health Aide nurse. Betty exuded charity, kindness, and a positive attitude every day of her life. She was a problem solver and had to be, raising eight kids of her own and a stand-in parent for others over the years.

Betty is survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and her children, Dorie (Jacques) Patry, Denise (Gerald) Beaudette, John (Heather) Edwards, Peter (Nicole) Edwards, Mary (Vaughn) Casagrain, Tina (Andrew) Shaheen and Scott (Pamela) Edwards. She was predeceased by her husband of 58
years, Michael Philip “Phil” Edwards and her son Christopher Philip Edwards.

Heloise “Day Day” Becker, 77

Heloise “Day Day” Jean Becker, 77, of Tupper Lake, went to rest with the Lord on March 19, 2024.

Day Day was the daughter of George “Buck” and Christina Lavigne. She was born on September 24th 1946.

In 1963 at the age of 16 she met and fell in love with Gene H. Becker. She married Gene by the age of 17 on June 13th, 1964, at Saint Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake. They lived “happily ever after” and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June. Gene never left her side all the way to the very end.

Day Day was born and raised in Tupper Lake where she attended Tupper Lake Central Schools. She was part of an integral work force in Tupper Lake where she worked at the dress factory, the plywood factory, Oval Wood Dish (OWD) and retired from Sunmount DDSO.

She was one of the hardest workers out there and she would give you the shirt off her back. People say she would “touch their heart” when they met her; her kindness was a type you would never forget. She always knew how to make her loved ones and friends laugh.

Day Day was an avid bowler for many years. She was a member of several bowling leagues in Tupper Lake; including a mixed league with her husband Gene, the R&C Becker team league, and many others for the years she bowled. Day Day’s favorite past time was playing bingo with her husband Gene; along with doting on her three beautiful grandchildren.

Day Day is survived by her loving husband Gene and their loving sons Curtis Gene Becker and Scott Allen Becker, all of Tupper Lake. She is also survived by her grandchildren, who she absolutely cherished, Chloe Rose Becker, Calli Anne Becker and Ryan Curtis Becker. They were the sunshine of her life. She loved them “to the moon and back… and back again”.

She is also survived by her sister Sharon “Lil” (Robert) King, her brother George “Chipper” (Debra) Lavigne, and their children, who were very special to her, Janelle, Becky and Mark, along with many special friends.

She was predeceased by her parents Christina and George Lavigne. Calling hours will be held at Frary Funeral Home in Tupper Lake today, Wednesday March 27 from 3p.m. to 6p.m.. There will be a service at the funeral home followed by at gathering at the Tupper Lake VFW for a celebration of Day Day’s life and sharing of memories.

Pamela “Penny” Young, 78

Pamela (Penny) Beaudette Young, born on March 29, 1945, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2024, with family by her side at the Adirondack Medical Center.

Pamela was the child of Albert and Geraldine (Lalonde) Beaudette. The first of thirteen children, whom she helped her mother care for during her childhood years.

Penny attended Tupper Lake High School. She then married Leonard F Young, II in 1964 and they homed in Tupper Lake. Len passed away in 2012 due to cancer.

Penny was a hands-on mother to her children, Leonard (Peanut), Tina and Debbie. Once the children were older, Penny worked in Mercy Healthcare Center nursing home as an Aide until her retirement. After her retirement, she was always there to help her children by caring for grandchildren. Her selfless act will be forever loved.

Penny lived a quiet life, enjoying visits from her siblings, Susie/Ken Herman, Jean/Gary Heart, Sherman (deceased)/Patricia Beaudette, Richard/Sherry Beaudette, Katherine/Michael Gaudette, Lawrence Beaudette, Robert/Christine Beaudette, Jerry/Denise Beaudette, Ronald/Stacey Mallet, Paul/Sharon Beaudette, Joseph Beaudette and Michael/Jean Beaudette (both deceased).

Her parents, Albert and Geraldine (Lalonde) Beaudette predeceased her.

Surviving is her children Leonard/Christine (Staves) Young and Tina/Thomas Vaillancourt. Penny’s youngest daughter, Debbie passed away in 2004 after her battle with cancer.

Penny is survived by her grandchildren William and his partner Dee Gillette. Vanessa Vaillancourt and her partner Shawn Bell. Corey, Megan and Jordan (Tino) Young and his partner Sarah Robinson. Chad St. Louis and his partner Alisha Dukett. Derek, Dustin and Brittney Miller.

Penny is also survived by her great- grandchildren; Kody and Tyler Vaillancourt, Braylynn, William and Gabe Bell, Tailor Whitson, Blake, Quinton, Sullivan and Ella Young. Carter, Taven, DebbieAnn Miller and Walkyr St. Louis. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Penny’s dear friend, Debbie Miller, helped Penny in her final days and her care and kindness will always be remembered.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Penny's name to the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 901, Tupper Lake NY. The family will have a graveside service on May 10th at 11a.m. A celebration of life will be held following the service.

Jennie M. Walter, 84

Jennie M. Walter, 84, of Plattsburgh, New York, passed away on February 14, 2024, in Plattsburgh.

She was born on January 1, 1940, in St. Albans, VT.

Jennie worked most of her life in the healthcare field in various capacities. She was a Certified Nurse’s Aide, Home Health Aide, and later an EKG Tech. Early in life, she worked with the famous knife thrower and sharpshooter Paul Lacross on his Wheel of Death.

In her free time, Jennie volunteered with the American Red Cross, led the sea scouts, and enjoyed camping, fishing, and attending car races.

She is survived by six daughters, Sandra Moran of Johnson, VT, Peggy (Michael) Price, Sheila (William) Madsen both of St. Petersburg, FL, Lee Zweeres of Gulfport, FL, Roxanne Isbister of Johnson, VT, and Ann Hayden of Augusta, KS. Jennie is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, with another expected in May. She is also survived by her companion, Sheldon Boynton of Keeseville, NY, and brother, Roland (Deloras) Bushey of Augusta, KS, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Jennie was preceded in death by her son, Jason Duplantie, grandson, Corey Duplantie, parents Howard and Elizabeth (Bellevue) Bushey, and siblings Helen Church, Homer, Harry, and Ida Bushey.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024, at 1 pm St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Tupper Lake, NY.

Richard “Rich” Frontera, 76

Richard Frontera passed quietly on Wednesday February 28, 2024, at his home in Tupper Lake, of natural causes at the age of 76.

Born in Brooklyn on July 25, 1947, he is survived by his wife Vonna, two sisters - Louise and Loretta, a brother Edward and son Eric.

Richard lived in the North Country for most of his life, enjoying the beauty of the Adirondacks. He was a supporter of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta and loved entertaining friends and family at every opportunity.

A memorial service will be held at Frary Funeral Home in Tupper Lake on March 8, 2024 between the hours of 2p.m. and 4p.m.

Catherine “Kate” Ruth Parent

Catherine “Kate” Ruth Parent, also known as “TK” Tall Kate, “KP”, and “Ruthless,” among other
nicknames, was 47 years old when she peacefully moved on from this world on February 18, 2024 at her childhood home in Tupper Lake, after a brief, but tough battle with cancer.

Kate was not only “Ruthless,” she was fearless. She took on her illness with classic Kate strength and kept her sardonic humor intact to the very end, finally resting under the sun rising on Simond Pond.

While all of us who knew her know that she was an incredibly independent and individualistic
force, she was also a big softy who loved fiercely all those that were lucky enough to be brought
into her life. She made sure her family, her huge network of amazing friends, and all her animal
friends (mostly dogs, but also some cats and a tarantula) knew how special each and all were to her.

She was born in May of 1976 to Dick and Monica Parent of Tupper Lake, who predeceased her.
Dick was a local sport shop owner and guide, and Monica was a teacher in Long Lake where
Kate went to elementary and high school.

She went to college at SUNY Plattsburgh, and grad
school at Potsdam SUNY where she specifically studied her passion for the written word.

Kate was a voracious reader and writer. She worked as a local reporter and then as an English
teacher in Star Lake and Tupper Lake. During this time, she lived with her long-time other half,
Tim Bissell who predeceased her.

Kate lived in Portland, OR for about 10 years where she made lifelong friends, worked in the restaurant business, and in her free time traveled and explored the state. She returned to the Adirondacks in 2021 where she worked at the Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake, again reuniting with her many old friends and making new ones that all surrounded her like family.

Kate is survived by her brother Joe, sister-in-law Ally, many aunts, uncles and cousins. She is also survived by her many rock-solid friends from all over the country.

A celebration of Kate’s life will be held at the Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake, NY on March 3,
12p.m. to 2 p.m. In the spirit of Kate’s own individualistic style, please wear whatever reflects your personal style as Kate would. Casual and Adirondack will likely dominate, but
whatever suits you is welcome.

Donald J. Sabin, 93

Donald J. Sabin, age 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. He was born October 4, 1930 in Tupper Lake, the son of Lawrence “Mike” and Agnes (Staves) Sabin. A 1948 graduate from Tupper Lake High School, Don continued his studies at LeMoyne College until he was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Don married his high school sweetheart, Marlene LaPorte, at St. Alphonsus Church on June 1, 1952. He followed his father in the electrical trade, working first with the family business and then joining the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) as a journeyman and then local business manager. Some of the construction projects he worked on: the St. Lawrence Seaway, Reynolds Aluminum & Chevrolet plants in Massena, the George Washington Bridge, the Astoria Power Plant in Queens, NY, and Paul Smith’s College, are to name a few. In 1969, the family relocated from the Adirondacks to Maryland when Don was appointed to represent the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (AFL-CIO) in the Washington D.C. office. He was Assistant to the International President and was assigned to handle questions/problems concerning the obligations of local officers, appeals, elections and the filing and processing of charges. He had to ensure that proper protocols were followed in accordance with the IBEW Constitution, as well as relevant laws and policies.

Don believed in community involvement and was clearly civic minded. In his earlier Tupper Lake years, he was a volunteer fireman (along with his father and brothers) for 15 years, a Knights of Columbus member, and also served on the Tupper Lake Central School District - Board of Education. In Maryland, he was active as a hockey coach, a religious instructor at Sacred Heart Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was appointed as Grand Master for the Knights of Columbus, Washington, D.C., and in 1979, proudly led the procession at Saint Matthews Cathedral for Pope John Paul II’s visit to the United States. Upon his retirement in 1992, Don and Marlene returned to Tupper Lake where he continued his community service. A member of Sunmount’s Board of Visitors for years, he was an advocate on behalf of the rights and best interests of persons with disabilities. Dedicated to the Knights of Columbus, he actively recruited new members, and he also supported the Marine Corp League at the VFW. Similar interests kept him busy during the winter months in Port Charlotte, FL. As the President of the Fire Club, he continued the fundraising events that were developed to assist park residents with necessary medical equipment. The success of those fundraising events was instrumental for creating a Veteran’s Memorial, at Maple Leaf Estates, honoring all services of the armed forces both in the United States and Canada.

His family was his first priority, and he loved to travel. With his children residing throughout the country, he easily traveled much of the United States for visits and reunions at National Parks. Highlights from his trips abroad were, Germany in 1990 after the wall came down, London, Paris and the beach of Normandy. He actively followed politics from the local to the national level. Don enjoyed a good game of cards, along with trips to the casinos, and always looked forward to his McDonald mornings, and routine stops to the Post Office and Shaheen’s.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Marlene, three daughters Lynn Sabin of Port Charlotte, FL, Katherine (Ray) Woodford of Syracuse, NY, Diane (Tom) Denneny of Sterling, VA, and two sons John (Terri) Sabin of Haywarden, IA, Paul (Teresa) Sabin of Tacoma, WA, and daughter-in-law Earlene Sabin of Fort Walton Beach, FL; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers and their wives, Richard “Dick” and Theresa “Tootsie” Sabin of Tupper Lake, Gary and Mary Sabin of Farmington, NY, and one sister-in-law, Carole (LaPorte) Carrillo of Syracuse, NY and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by his son Michael in 2016, sister Nadine in 1998, and two brothers Ted in 1993, and Robert in 1940. Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 23 at the Frary Funeral Home in Tupper Lake from 3-5 pm. A burial Mass and graveside service will be held in May 2024. Jeannette Shinnock

A Mass of Christian burial will be held for Jeannette M. Shinnock, privately, per her wishes at the convenience of the family with Rev. Mark Reilly presiding. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Massena in the spring. There will be no public calling hours or services.

Jeannette passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving and devoted husband and children under the care of Hospice late Tuesday evening, February 13, 2024.

Jeannette is survived by her husband Richard G. Shinnock, of 67 years, and their caring daughters; Glenda MacPherson, Karla Flynn and Serena and husband Stephen Krywanczyk all of Massena, NY. Jeannette is also survived by her five grandchildren; Ashley Flynn of Riverton, UT, Eric MacPherson, Lindsay MacPherson and companion Seth Blair, Aaron Krywanczyk, and Allie Krywanczyk all of Massena, NY with three great-grandchildren; Whitney and Brody Flynn-Contreras and Gavin Blair. She leaves also one brother Leroy and wife Caroline Peets of Newton Falls, NY, a sister in-law Carol Peets of Citrus Spring, FL, along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, her brothers, Leonard Peete, and Raymond Peets, predeceased her along with a granddaughter Kristina Marie “Kristie” Flynn in 2021.

Jeannette was born to the late Joseph and Anna (Deneault) Peets in Tupper Lake, NY on March 15, 1937. She attended schools in Tupper Lake, graduating from Holy Ghost Academy. She worked at Tupper Lake National Bank and later at JJ Newberry’s Store where she meet and soon married her loving husband Richard G. Shinnock at Saint Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake, NY on September 16, 1956, to the late Rev. Msgr. D. J. Brault.

Jeannette was a faithful communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Massena, and enjoyed spending time celebrating family events and holidays at the family home. She was very proud of her family and enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a Massena Raiders fan and could be found traveling with the Massena Hockey traveling teams with her husband as a big supporter in her younger years. She loved taking rides to the Adirondacks especially in the fall sharing stories of her life there, during her childhood and teenage years along with times spent with her husband when first married.

Stephen LaPierre, 74

A graveside service will be held at St. Alphonsus Cemetery in the spring for Mr. Stephen Leonard LaPierre, age 74, who passed away at his Tupper Lake home Tuesday, February 6, 2024. Arraignments are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home.

Stephen was born on March 3, 1949 in Tupper Lake, the son of the late Robert and Rena (Greiner) LaPierre. He attended school in Tupper Lake and enlisted in the United States Army April 1967, proudly serving during the Vietnam Conflict. Stephen was honorably discharged in 1970 and three months later, married Nancy Gonyea on April 4, 1970 at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake.

He was employed by the United States Department of Justice as Chief Security Officer at FCI Ray Brook and retired after 20 years of dedicated service in 2002. Stephen enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed helping people. He was also a locksmith and held various leadership positions at his local V.F.W. Post.

Stephen was a proud great-grandfather to three. He is survived through his children, Robert LaPierre and his wife Dawn, of Tupper Lake, and Kimberly Dafoe and her husband Richard, of Russell, NY.

He is also survived through his siblings Wayne LaPierre Sr., Brian LaPierre and his wife Mary, Sheila and Lawrence Reandeau and Susan and Charles Rice, all from Tupper Lake. Stephen is also survived through grandchildren Britney Towles, Richard Dafoe III, Dawson LaPierre, Peyton Dafoe-Hodgdon and Jayden Dafoe.

Stephen was predeceased by his brother, Kevin LaPierre and his wife Nancy, who died March 1, 2008.

Scott LaVassaur, 55

Scott LaVassaur, 55, passed away suddenly on January 20, 2024.

Scott was born and raised in Piercefield, and attended Tupper Lake High School.

Upon his graduation in 1986, he enlisted in the Air Force where he was a telecommunications specialist. He received an Honorable Discharge and retired after 20 years of service. He was stationed in several places around the world, including California, Germany, New Mexico, Iraq, and Alaska.

While in Alaska, he met and married the love of his life, Tracy. She referred to him as “Lava Love.”

They built a wonderful life in Alaska where he worked for the Alaskan Railroad after he retired from the Air Force. Eventually they decided to move to Nevada where he worked for Berrick Gold Corporation.

They settled on a 25-acre ranch where they raised their animals- horses, a donkey, sheep, llama, ducks, cats, and dogs. On his days off he was always tinkering around his ranch making sure his love and animals were well taken care of. Not to mention his friends whom he was always there to help.

Scott is survived by his loving wife, Tracy LaVassaur, two sons Derek and Shane LaVassaur and a daughter, Victoria (Tori) LaVassaur all of New Mexico, two step-sons, Kyle and Casey Cavyell of Palmer, Alaska, parents Audrey and Wayne LaVassaur of Piercefield, a brother, Mark LaVassaur of Tupper Lake, and a sister Ellen Horton of Rensselaer, N.Y. He is also survived by one niece, Christa (John) Murray, three nephews, Brandon and Brasen LaVassaur, Bryan Wheeler.

He was pre-deceased by his grandparents Alexander and Genevieve LaVassaur, Helen Gauthier, and Otis “Buck” Burnham.

He will be greatly missed by his loving neighbor, Uncle Mel. Scott touched many lives in the short time with his kindness, caring and love of life. He will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life will be held in July for family and friends in Piercefield. His military funeral will be held on August 25, 2024 in Nevada.

Joseph Cormier Sr., 69

Joseph “Joe” Cormier, Sr., 69, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 28, 2024.

Joe was born on June 23, 1954, in Tupper Lake, to the late Reginald and Florence Cormier. Early on in childhood, he lived in the Potsdam-Parishville area where he started school, then moved back to Tupper Lake.

He attended and graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1972.

He went on to work at various places in Syracuse, N.Y. and Auburn, CA, prior to returning to Tupper Lake in 1980.

From there, he worked for the Town of Altamont Highway Department for five years, The Village of Tupper Lake Water Department for 27 years, leading to his retirement. After retirement Joe worked part time as both a relief fire driver and police dispatcher.

After his retirement in New York, Joe moved to Warner Robins to be close to his beloved daughter and grandson, as family was incredibly important to him. There, he worked for Sizemore Security, retiring again in 2019 with the rank of Major and volunteered for WRALL.

Joe had a strong faith in the Lord and served on the vestry at the Anglican Church “Christ the Redeemer”.

He was active in school, played football and was president of the student council and was active in his local parish. He was respected and known for his sense of humor and helping wherever there was a need.

Joe was involved in many interesting activities and volunteer opportunities. He spent four years with the Columbian Squires, was an assistant chief and EMT with the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad for seven years, was the assistant scout master for Boy Scout Troop 11, a member of the Tupper Lake Fire Department, was captain of the Tupper Lake auxiliary police unit, spent 25 years as the president of the Tupper Lake Village employees CSEA Unit I, held offices of both executive vice president and local president with the Franklin County CSEA Local 817, worked for the Tupper Lake Highway Department, and was on the statewide board of directors for CSEA Local 100 for two terms.

If all of this wasn’t enough, he also held the position of Tupper Lake dog control officer for several years. In his free time, Joe enjoyed traveling, cheering for the Buffalo Bills, UGA football, and grilling. His presence will be deeply missed by those he held dear.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer MacPherson.

His memory will forever be treasured by his wife, Linda Stapleton Meade-Cormier; his son, Joseph Cormier, Jr. (Christine); grandsons, John MacPherson, Jr. and Blake Meade; brother, Paul Cormier; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends.

A small gathering will be held at the Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church with a funeral service to immediately follow at 1p.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2024, in the chapel of the Anglican Church.

A private gathering will be held in Tupper Lake at the convenience of the family in the spring.

Geraldine L. Betters, 94

Geraldine L. Betters, of New Windsor, N.Y., entered into eternal rest on January 24, 2024 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh, NY. She was 94 years old.

The daughter of the late Floyd Ling and Effie (Meacham) Ling, Geraldine was born on August 17, 1929 in Saranac Lake and grew up in Bloomingdale.

Geraldine graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1946. She continued her education at SUNY Plattsburgh earning her Bachelor’s Degree in 1950. And later she went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1962 at SUNY Potsdam.

Geraldine was a retired elementary school teacher having taught in Bloomingdale and Tupper Lake, before her family relocated to the Hudson Valley in 1965 and later retiring from the Newburgh Enlarged School District at the New Windsor Elementary School. After retiring in 1985, she became the director of St. John’s Nursery School in Cornwall, NY for several years. She was a gifted and dedicated first and second grade teacher who benefitted countless students throughout her career.

Geraldine was a member of a variety of organizations and a long-time member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cornwall, N.Y. She enjoyed cooking and socializing with family and friends, especially playing cards.

“Mom was a loving and doting presence to friends and family alike. She had a calm steady demeanor and could always be relied on whatever the situation,” family members noted. She will be missed greatly.

Geraldine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stewart James Betters. She is survived by her loving sons: Roger Betters and his wife Marilyn of Hurleyville, N.Y., Russell Betters and his wife Debra of Tupper Lake and Kingston, N.Y. and David Betters of New Windsor, NY; grandchildren Jeffrey (Lauren Foster and great-grandchild Hazel Mae) Betters and Stefan (Kristy) Betters.

The family would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence for their diligent and compassionate care of mom during her final days.

Visitation was held from 2p.m. to p.m. on Sunday, January 28th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY.  A Funeral Service was held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, January 29th at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 66 Clinton Street, Cornwall, NY. Peter R. Kucipeck, 83

Peter R. Kucipeck, 83, of Tupper Lake passed away peacefully on Friday, January 12, 2024, at his home following a long illness, under the care of High Peaks Hospice and surrounded by his loving family. In keeping with his wishes there will be no public visitation or funeral, however, a graveside service will be held in the spring at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Peter was born on January 25th, 1940, in Tupper Lake, NY. He was the son of the late Peter P. and Gladys (LeBlanc) Kucipeck. He was a 1958 graduate of Holy Ghost Academy. On April 28th, 1962, he married Linda M. Liberty at St. Alphonsus Church with Rev. Brault officiating. He spent his career working at Sunmount DDSO, retiring in 1995 as Assistant Personnel Officer after 36 years of service. Peter was known for his great sense of humor. He loved music and played lead guitar in a few local bands over the years. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles and any type of brain teaser puzzle, spending time on his computer, and doing small household projects.

He is survived by his wife Linda Kucipeck, his daughters; Christine M. Kucipeck of Burlington, VT, Lisa A. Martin of Latham, NY and Deborah J. Kucipeck of Port Angeles, WA as well has his grandsons; Corey Lopez of Rensselaer, NY and Connor Martin of Latham, NY. He is also survived by his sisters; Carol Lines of Tupper Lake and Jean LaBarge and her husband Frank of Scottsdale, NY, also his brother; James Kucipeck and his wife Betsy of Tupper Lake.

Shirley Lavigne, 92

Shirley A. Lavigne, age 92, of 111 Wawbeek Avenue, passed away January 22, 2024 peacefully at her home surrounded by family. Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 26th from 3p.m.-5p.m. at the Frary Funeral Home, Tupper Lake. A Mass of Christian Burial for Shirley will be conducted at St Alphonsus Church in the spring at a date to be determined.

Shirley is survived by her five children, Jackie Denis and her husband Larry, of Tupper Lake and Nebo, NC, Howard Lavigne and his wife Joanne of Pennellville, NY, Dean Lavigne and his wife Marcy of Tupper Lake, Mary LaLonde and her husband Stuart of Tupper Lake and Lisa Bryda and her husband Dean of Castleton, NY; eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Shirley is predeceased by her husband Walter and her two daughters Taire and Michelle.

Shirley was born on February 3, 1931 in Tupper Lake, the daughter of Edmond and Emily (Disotell) Auclair. She graduated from Tupper Lake Schools in 1948 and married Walter on January 23, 1950 at St Alphonsus Church.

Shirley worked at the Altamont Dairy and the Telephone Company for many years before becoming a stay at home mom. During her stay at home though, Shirley worked many occupations such as: school cafeteria worker, real estate agent, Avon salesperson, and was instrumental in numerous special occasions for local people in providing wedding and birthday cakes, invitations and numerous other accessories for the occasion.

Shirley was very active in her community as a Eucharistic minister, volunteer for Mercy Health Care, St. Alphonsus choir, St. Anne Society, and past President of the Tupper Lake History Museum. Shirley’s most treasured time was spent with family. She also enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, traveling, bowling, snowmobiling, gambling and the great outdoors.
