Barbara Ann Mose, 81, of Carter Court, Plattsburgh, died Saturday, April 18, 2020 at the UVM Health Network, CVPH in Plattsburgh.

Born in Tupper Lake, May 20, 1938, she was the daughter of Arthur and Evelyn (Boushie) Denis. She graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1956.

Barbara married James R. Mose, April 23, 1966 in St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake. He predeceased her, January 20, 2017.

Barbara Mose 2.jpg

She began her career as a telephone operator and then went to work at various restaurants for more than four decades, making many lasting friendships. Barb enjoyed cooking, making special desserts for her grandchildren, family outings, and special casino trips.

During the years following her husband's passing, she enjoyed many new adventures with her girls. She especially enjoyed her weekly lunches with her friends and the many special friendships she made at the American Legion Post 20 in Plattsburgh and the Keeseville VFW Post 1505. Left to cherish the memory of Barbara are four daughters, Stephanie (Mose) and Matthew Spooner, Melissa Mose and Dean Parker, Tammy (Mose) and Christian Cooper, and Jennifer Mose; grandchildren, Kayla and Lawrence Moore, Jadon and Melissa Spooner, Nicholas Cooper, Savannah Cooper, and John James Casey; one very special great-granddaughter, Kaidence Spooner and one very special great-grandson, Grayson Moore; one special sister, Mary Denis; and many nieces and nephews. She was very grateful to her special neighbors who helped her out so much since her husband passed away.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her siblings.

Due to the Coronavirus, visitation and funeral service will be private. Committal prayers and burial will also be private in St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Tupper Lake. A public celebration of her life will be held at a date, time and place, to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the family to be allocated at their discretion.

Barb's family would like to extend a most genuine "thank you" to the nurses, doctors and staff at CVPH. Her family were unable to be by her side over the previous few weeks due to COVID-19. The staff took great care of her and helped them FaceTime or call whenever they wished. The staff went above and beyond for Barb during this difficult time. Her family will never forget and will be forever grateful for the kindness shown to all her loved ones.

Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru.

Beverly A. “Bev” Thompson, 83

Dan McClelland

Thomspson, Beverly.jpg

Beverly A. “Bev” Thompson, age 83, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2020 at her home in Tupper Lake.

Bev and her family had been battling dementia and then breast cancer for the last five years. Due to the difficult times, the family will be having a Celebration of Life in Beverly’s memory at a later date with Pastor Dave Downey and his wife, Judy officiating. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary-Stuart Funeral Home.

She was born on June 5, 1936, in Chateauguay, N.Y., the daughter of Robert and Mildred Thompson.

Bev was the oldest of seven children: Jimmy Thompson, Robert Thompson Jr., Eugene Thompson (wife Meradith), Sue Thompson, Luanne Matucci (husband John) and Dan Thompson (wife Debbie). Robert and Mildred also took in fourteen foster children. Bev loved all of her family. Being the oldest, she helped and looked after all of them. She became very close to Ronald Denett (wife Robin), who was one of the foster children. They had always been in each other’s lives, helping during her hard times, until her passing. She is predeceased by her parents and her brother Jimmy.

In the 1940’s, the family moved to Witherbee, N.Y. where Bev attended Mineville School and graduated top of her class. She then married her high school sweetheart.

In 1954, her son Charles Jaquish (wife Mona Infantino) was born. Charles gave her three grandchildren: Melanie Toohey (husband Dan), Charles Jaquish Jr. (wife Paula) and Jamie Jaquish, and one great grandchild, Joseph Cyphers III. Through Melanie and Dan, she was also given four step-great grandchildren; Tashina Fox, Cierra Toohey, Chace Toohey, and Cody Toohey. Each one played a part keeping Bev home and caring for her. They all were her life, “her Angels.”

Anyone who knew Beverly also knows how much she loved and was devoted to them.

Bev attended college at the Harlem Valley State School of Nursing. She graduated at the top of her class with a RN degree in Nursing in 1971. Bev returned to work at Wassaic, N.Y., caring for the disabled. She loved her job and the people she cared for. Throughout her life, Beverly had always been an advocate for the disabled. Beverly moved to Tupper Lake in 1976, remarried and began working at Sunmount DDSO. She worked 35 years in this field, caring for and then teaching others how to care for the disabled. After retirement, Beverly married Richard Briggs and spent many happy years together until his passing in 2009.

Beverly was determined to be a strong, independent woman, which was not easy being born in 1936. She had a second home- “a love”, she called it, a camp on the St. Lawrence River. There, she was considered “the boss,” and enjoyed swimming, fishing, boating, chasing the geese with her Suburban and watching the sunsets. She camped there over 30 years. Beverly loved cooking for others, her baby dolls, driving fast, swimming, root beer floats, and of course her heartthrob Randy Travis. Most importantly, she loved her family.

Beverly’s biggest attribute was her love for her family. She loved and helped everyone with a special place in her heart for the disabled. Beverly helped and changed the lives of so many people. She was an angel and loved everyone unconditionally.

Donations in Beverly’s memory can be made our to the Adirondack Community Church, P.O. Box 207, Newton Falls, NY 13666.

Daniel K. Green, 85

Dan McClelland

Mr. Daniel K. Green, of Waltham, passed peacefully and surrounded by compassionate care, thanks to the many heroes on 6E ICU at Newton Wellesley Hospital on April 9, 2020. He was 85.

Dan would have wanted you "glancing" at this obituary, while listening to thunderously loud Big Band music on an original Victrola record player and he would have insisted the write-up include a joke at the beginning, middle and end. (We would have inserted one of the jokes here but in all the years of poorly-timed-but-charming comedic delivery, we literally couldn't hear the punch lines over his own laughter).

He was an only child of the late Daniel and Alice Green, born in Little Falls Hospital, N.Y. on May 29, 1934. His family was from Dolgeville, N.Y. and were proud owners of the Daniel Green Slipper Company for many years. The family went back many generations and one of Dan's favorite past times was telling time-honored stories over viewing of family documentation covering major U.S. events like the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the Gold Rush, and many more.

After attending Dolgeville High School and Coyne College in Chicago, he met his wife Nance at a hair salon in Tupper Lake.

Dan's mom was giving Nance a North Country beauty parlor treatment at her new salon and it lasted so long, he hung around to chat and it led to a loving marriage of over 50 years and four children.

His true passions were clear: Electronics, expert knowledge of cars, listening to records for hours, animals, oyster-stuffing demands at all holiday gatherings and a classic Three Stooges marathon on New Year's Eve or maybe every Sunday morning forever. He loved antiques, including his grandfather clock from 1811 that still gets wound today. His heart was family – a simple dinner with his wife and kids was his most frequent request, even if Olympic-level napping through said request was his best-in-show activity.

Many in Waltham knew Dan during a different time when he was an expert Sound Consultant/Sales Associate at Radio Shack on Main Street for over 30 years. A proud moment was teaching his son about "real" customer service when they got to work together.

Beloved husband of Nance (Russell) Green; father of Susan A. Green of Ayer, Daniel K. Green of Utica, New York, Kenneth R. Green (Nicole) of Wrentham, and the late James K. Green and Holly Louise Green and the father-in-law of Donna Green of Gloversville, New York.

Due to the ongoing health crisis around the world and in our community, funeral services for Dan are private.

Donations in his memory can be made to the NWH COVID-19 fund, https://www.nwh.org/home/covid-19-donations.

Mildred Anna Gould, 99

Dan McClelland

Obit-Mildren Gould.jpg

Mildred Anna Gould, 99, of Summerville, SC, widow of Russell E. Gould, died peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 18, 1920, in Elmhurst, N.Y., the daughter of William F. and Marie Anna (Wernex) Frey.

Mili grew up on Long Island, the oldest of four siblings and attended public schools, graduating in 1938.

The family spent summers in the beautiful Adirondacks, camping at Fish Creek Ponds. It was there she met her future husband. They married on November 20, 1941. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the US Army and they spent the next three years apart. She stayed on Long Island and worked in Manhattan during that time.

Upon his return, they went back to northern New York. Daughter Sandra Lee and son William Floyd were born in Malone and soon after they relocated to Tupper Lake when Bell Telephone Co. transferred Russ.

She enjoyed serving in her church, Eastern Stars, playing canasta, laughing with the ladies at the “knitting” club and, in the winter months, skiing, and snowmobiling. Summertime was spent organizing lots of family picnics and boating on the many lakes and rivers in the area.

Mili and Russ built and operated the Northern Lights Ice Cream stand for many years. They loved living in the Adirondacks with extended family nearby.

They began an active travel life, visiting the world and in particular, Italy, where Russ fought during WWII. Things were very different then. They also explored much of America and Canada. In the early 70s, they began a new chapter in Pompano Beach, Florida. Other New York friends were there and Liesureville was an ideal winter retirement spot. They had an active life, planning parties and celebrations. They were truly blessed with great friends and a very busy schedule.

Mili moved to Summerville in 2006, about two years after her beloved Russ passed away to be near her daughter and son-in-law, who was stationed at Charleston AFB. She was present in Greenville, SC, when her first great grandson was born. She was a member of the Dorchester Presbyterian Church and the Dorchester Presbyterian Women.

Her most precious gifts were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was forever thankful for her long and wonderful life.

She is survived by her daughter Sandee White and son-in-law Neil of Summerville, two grandchildren, Stacy A. Coulter of Greenville, SC, and Nathan A. White (Alison) of Charlotte, NC., great grands Tradd Coulter and Arthur, Casey and Bridget White, brother Walter (Judy) Frey and nine nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, Russ and son Billy and brothers Herb and Bill Frey.

Her family will have a Celebration of Life at a later date. Sandee and Neil wish to extend their gratitude for the love and special care given by her caregivers, Kathy Spencer, Kit Mills, and Pat Moore and the nurses and CNAs at the Hospice House of Summerville.

If you would like to donate, please consider the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad.

Nancy (Burgwyn) Lawrence Sargent

Dan McClelland

Nancy L Sargent portrait.jpg

From Bloomfield, CT, 96 years old Nancy (Burgwyn) Lawrence Sargent passed away peacefully at the Caleb Hitchcock Care Center on February 20.

Nancy was born February 12, 1924 in Bronxville, N.Y., the daughter of Dudley Bates Lawrence and Katherine Clitherall (Birch) Lawrence and the granddaughter of Sarah Bates Lawrence and William Van Duzer Lawrence, the founder of Sarah Lawrence College, Lawrence Hospital and what is now known as the Lawrence Park Historic District.

She was raised in Bronxville and then Mount Kisco, N.Y., and graduated from the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, CT with the class of 1942.

As a teenager she was quite the adventurer and a precocious soul, traveling solo from New York to Boston, to Alabama to visit relatives on her mother’s side of the family and once to Guatemala on a banana boat to visit a classmate.

Like many in her generation, WWII proved to be a time to leave the beaten track. In Nancy’s case, that involved a trip to Pensacola, FL to help her older brother, Dudley, and his young family. There she met and married Edward Cutler Sargent, a naval aviator. Together they helped the baby boom along with four spirited boys.

Throughout a long life that included many moves from New York to Wyoming, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Connecticut and the early death of her husband in 1977, the two constants remained her deep attachment to family and her life-long connection with the home where she spent nearly every summer of her life, a camp that her father built in 1916 at Big Wolf Lake in the Adirondacks.

Nancy was also a wonderful storyteller with a witty sense of humor, an avid reader, a creative spirit and a strong supporter of the arts, animal rights and the protection of wildlife, serving for years as a volunteer at the Carnivore Preservation Trust in Pittsboro, N.C. She is survived by her four sons: Lawrence of North Royalton, OH, David of Ashburnham, MA, Edward Jr. of Portland, ME and Peter of Bangkok, Thailand; four grandchildren, Kathy (Sargent) Havelka, Elizabeth Sargent, Anne Sargent and Jonathan Sargent; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held later in the spring at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y.

Swenson, Florence.jpg

Florence Madeline Swenson, better known as Flo to many, 93, of 79 Stetson Road Tupper Lake, died peacefully on March 7, 2020. A small service will be held at 2p.m. on Saturday March 14 at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 8 Brentwood Street, Tupper Lake, N.Y.

Flo is survived by her children April and Robert Swenson of Tupper Lake, N.Y. She is also survived by her grandchildren Danielle and Christian Cuttaia, Ashlie LaLonde, Nerissa Martin and Josh Gallo and Benjamin and Kacie Martin. Flo, aka MeMe is also survived by her great grandchildren whom she spent most of her time with: Ava, Camille and Cooper Cuttaia, Charley and Eliza Gallo, Benjamin Wiley Martin, Peyton Williams and Isabella Charron.

Florence was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. and moved to Childwold in the early seventies where she lived out her golden years. She was the child of Walter H. Fourness and Bertha M. Sellars Fourness.

She was predeceased by her brother and sister in law, Walter H. Fourness (Uncle Chub) and Prudence A. Fourness.

Flo worked at the Childwold Leather Artisan for many years. She loved to garden and plant flowers. She was known as the community greeter, always offering hugs and positive thoughts to anyone who crossed her path.

Flo enjoyed spending countless hours with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Whether it be outside playing in the dirt, laying on the floor with them, reading stories, telling old stories, singing and dancing or just holding them tight. There are no words to describe this woman. She was surely different from the rest. She was what we all hope to be someday: kind, happy, compassionate for others, smart, eccentric, generous, thrifty, creative, loving and most of all, honest.

Over the years Flo became a MeMe and her heart was full, often quietly telling us all: "you are my favorite...shhhhh don't tell!” As we look back, we could all agree she was our favorite and she will be deeply missed. Do not cry for her... just keep smiling.

Memorial donations can be made to her second home a place she truly loved St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 8 Brentwood Street, Tupper Lake, NY. She loved her church family like her own.
