Herbert P. D’Avignon
Herbert P. D’Avignon (Herb), 91, of Queensbury, passed peacefully at Saratoga Hospital on March 15, 2025. Herb was born on 1/7/34 in Tupper Lake, the son of Herbert P D’Avignon and Geraldine (Potvin). He was predeceased by his unborn son, brother John, sister Sara Sovay, granddaughter Althea Wilson, grandson Nicholas Farina, granddaughter-in-law Sheila D’Avignon.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of nearly 75 years Althea (Yando), brother Gerald (Lorraine) of Vero Beach, children Barton (Debbie), Vicki (William) Wilson, Lori Stone, Kari (Rodney) Russo, and extended family daughters Kathy (David) Waite, Linda (John) Steinberg. Grandchildren Mathohn, Billy, Cody, Steven, Colby, Ridge, Isabelle. Great grandchildren Dylan, Annalysse, Will, Freddie, Bobby, Chloe, Connor, Daniel.
Herb attended Tupper Lake High School where he met his wife Althea and married on 7/13/50. In the early 50’s Herb, being a third generation lumberjack, worked in Limekiln & other job sites in the Tupper Lake area. One might say he came out of the woods and learned the trade of being a hardwood grade sawyer at Guy Lakes Lumber & Jamestown Sterling Corp.
The family moved to Lake George in 1965 where he sawed for David Martin Lumber for 30+ years. Herb retired from his partner and his sawmill, Vaughn & D’Avignon Lumber in 1999.
For a decade Herb worked as an engineer at Lake George Steamboat on the Lac Du Saint Sacrement.
Herb and Althea found pleasure riding snowmobiles with family and friends throughout the Adirondacks. Through the years, more than anything else, their hobby became doing anything they could for family and friends. If anyone happened to show up for a meal there was always room and enough for however many extras came! Many are in a better place today because of their generosity and love. In their later years they enjoyed cruising with family and friends throughout the Caribbean, South America and Hawaii, as well as spending the winter months in Vero Beach, Florida with family. Herb was always ready with a great story about working in the lumber camps.

Anne Marie Whittum, 95
Anne Marie Whittum, age 95, died peacefully on March 8, 2025 at Elderwood at Uihlein in Lake Placid. Anne was born on June 27,1929 to Francis and Louise Disotell of Tupper Lake. Anne and her five sisters spent their childhood in a Park Street home across from Shaheen’s Market.
Anne was a life-long member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, and she was a 1949 graduate of Holy Ghost Academy.
Anne met her future husband, Sanford Whittum, while working in Coreys for Mrs. Ecklund at Indian Spring Camp (later to become Cold River Ranch). She also enjoyed working in retail, with her first such job at Ginsburg’s Department Store in Tupper Lake. Anne later returned to working in retail after raising her family, working at McCurdy’s Department Store in Rochester, NY.
Anne’s married life brought her to several new places as she followed her husband’s job changes. They began married life in New York City and had their first child, Stephanie. They moved to Schenectady, NY where their daughter Muriel was born. Another move brought them to Utica, NY where their son Kinsley was born. After living many more years in both Syracuse and Rochester, Sandy and Anne retired to Coreys in 1989 to enjoy the beauty and solitude of Hiawatha Lodge, on Stony Creek Pond. Anne spent her final year and half at Saranac Village at Will Rogers a retirement community where she enjoyed socializing and puzzling with friends.
Anne had an active social circle and enjoyed time with her female friends. She occasionally had the opportunity to travel, which was special to her. She was an avid knitter and a determined puzzler. She enjoyed planting and tending flowers each year and maintaining a memory garden dedicated to her daughter, who passed too young at age 48.
Anne is survived by daughter Muriel Hesler & husband Michael Whitney of Silver Spring, MD; and son Kinsley Whittum and wife MarySue of Webster, N.Y., Grandchildren: Rebecca Rabel, Anna Gruettner, Christopher O’Sullivan, Sanford Hesler, Kimberly Springer, Lisa Sternick, Nicole Whittum, Michelle Whittum, and Kory Whittum. She is also survived by 8 great grandchildren; Sarah and Evan Rabel; Charlie & Samantha Gruettner; Peyton and Sage Sternick; Eleanora Springer and George Hesler.
Anne was predeceased by her husband Sanford in 2014 and her daughter Stephanie in 2001.
Calling hours will be held at Frary Funeral Home, 24 Cliff Ave., Tupper Lake from 11:30a.m. to 1:30p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2025. A Funeral Mass will follow at St. Alphonsus Church at 2p.m. with Father Paul Kelly officiating. A graveside service and interment will take place at Coreys Cemetery, at the convenience of the family.

Donald Lee Grammo
Donald Lee Grammo, age 92, of Herndon, Va, passed away on February 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born at home on May 7, 1932, in Willoughby, Vermont, he was the son of Elwin Albert Grammo and Florence Julia (Drown) Grammo.
A graduate of Tupper Lake High School, class of 1950, Donald went on to study at Burdett Business College in Boston for two years before answering the call to serve his country in the U.S. Army. Upon his honorable discharge, he obtained a bachelor’s degree from New York University and began a long and successful career at Pfizer, retiring on January 1, 1996, after many years of dedicated service.
Outside of his professional life, Donald was a passionate volunteer, dedicating time to the Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Organization, where he mentored and guided young people. He had a deep love for life’s simple pleasures, including traveling, skiing, ballroom dancing, and spending time at his camp site in the Pocono Mountains. However, it was his devotion to his family that brought him the most joy. Donald was known as the family historian, always ready to share stories and preserve the memories of generations. His nieces and nephews adored him, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ronald Grammo, his sister-in-law Joan Grammo, his sister Sudenne LaLonde, his brother-in-law Gordon LaLonde, his sister Birdenne Brozowski, his sister-in-law Grace Grammo, and his nephews Murray Smithers, William Gebo, and Paul Grammo.
He is survived by his brother Reynald Grammo, his brother-in-law Richard Brozowski, his beloved nieces and nephews, and a growing family of great and great-great nieces and nephews, all of whom loved him dearly and will carry on his memory.
Donald will be remembered for his kind heart, his dedication to family, and the warmth he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Helen Besaw, 84
Helen Besaw, age 84, of Tupper Lake, died Monday, March 10, 2025 at 12:45a.m. at Mercy Living Center, Tupper Lake, NY surrounded by her Pastor and several good friends.
On Tuesday, March 4th, a group of Helen's lady friends gathered in her room at Mercy living Center to celebrate her 84th birthday.
Frary Funeral Home of Tupper Lake is in charge of funeral arrangements. A service for Helen will take place at the Tupper Lake Christian Center Church, 102 Main St. Tupper Lake, on Saturday March 15, 2025. Calling hour will be from 10A.M. to 11A.M. followed by a funeral service. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery in the Spring.
Helen was born in Tupper Lake, the daughter of Edgar and Edith Mayville, on March 4th 1941. Helen was very active in her Church. She led a Bible study group for the ladies of the Church for many years.
Helen loved sharing about her faith. She would say that Jesus changed the course of her life. He gave her a hope that could not be found in this world.
Helen received her LPN degree in nursing and worked at Mercy Hospital in Tupper Lake and afterward at Sunmount Developmental Center.
Helen is survived by her son Jim Abbott of Buford, Georgia, and by her nephews Micheal, Shawn and Richard Mayville and her nieces Pam Cantwell and Ann Mayville. She was predeceased, 10 days before her death, by her son David LeBoutillier, (who appears with her in the picture), and also by her brother Robert Mayville and his wife Ruth.
Helen loved to travel, especially her annual trip to Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster, PA. where the Bible comes alive. Each visit to Sight and Sound is a journey back in time, as stories from the Bible come to life on a panoramic stage. Every original production immerses you in the pages of Scriptures.

Patricia Ruth Lanthier McMahon, 67
Patricia Ruth Lanthier McMahon, 67, of Tupper Lake, died unexpectedly with breathing complications on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. Born on June 24, 1957, she was the daughter of Isadore and Frances (Barcomb) Lanthier.
Patty was a graduate of Tupper Lake High School in 1975. She was employed at Sunmount DDSO in the kitchen of which she retired.
Patty was at one time a very active member of the Tupper Lake Rod & Gun Club. She enjoyed spending time with her grandsons, Dawson and Tayler, her granddaughter, Tianna, her daughters, Melissa and Heather, and her husband, David. She also loved going on trips with him such as charter fishing the Champlain and even made a once in a lifetime trip big game hunting in South Africa. She loved and cherished her family and friends.
Survivors include her daughters, Melissa Bradley and her significant other, Dave Benway, and Heather Hall; grandchildren, Dawson Walton, Tayler Hall, and Tianna McMahon; a step-son, James McMahon; and her beloved husband, David McMahon. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Michael Lanthier.
She wished to have no services, but to have a celebration of life at a later date in the Summer.

Margaret “Peggy” Ann Callaghan
Margaret “Peggy” Ann Callaghan adored wife, mother, and Nana as known to her 56 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, slipped out of this life on Friday February 28, 2025, when she lost her excruciating battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She had the vast majority of her many family members at her bedside.
On September 7, 1963, she married Thomas P. Callaghan of Poughkeepsie. They moved to Tupper Lake, where she raised their five children, while Tom worked his career as a long-haul trucker.
Peggy was involved in a number of associations over the years as a volunteer and/or committee member, including Red Hats, HGA Home & School Assn., Owls Head-Mt. View Ladies Auxiliary, Piercefield Ladies Auxiliary, Tupper Lake Hockey Assoc., Catholic Daughters of America, Tupper Lake Adult Center, Board of Elections, and the Republican Committee.
Peggy also spent countless hours at the indoor/outdoor hockey rinks cheering her beloved sons on, as well as countless nights calling the NYS Troopers to go looking for her three wayward, teenage daughters, while on their journey to becoming the wonderful women they are today.
Peggy held several positions over the course of her life, the highest being homemaker and caregiver, followed by American Management Assn., Mercy Healthcare Center (cook), Tupper Lake Adult Center (cook), Tupper Lake Central School, Grand Union Hotel, Al’s Lounge, and various seasonal cleaning jobs throughout Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, and Long Lake.
Peggy’s leisure time passions included camping, reading romance novels, knitting, and tending to her plants and flowers throughout the years. She also bowled on the Ladies Friday night bowling league for a number of years on Fletcher’s Scrappers team; winning a multitude of trophies over the years.
Peggy is survived by her husband Tom of 62 years, her daughters Pam Callaghan Whitley (Steve), Becky Callaghan Kopp of Myrtle Beach SC, Debby Callaghan Gagnier (Kirk), Tommy Callaghan (Candy), and Larry Callaghan (Monique), all of Tupper Lake, a sister Dolores “Dee” Boyea, and a brother Michael Boyea (Cheryl), all of Owls Head, N.Y.
Peggy was predeceased by her father Watson Boyea, her mother Sadie (King) Boyea, her stepmother Florence Boyea, a brother Watson “Butch” Boyea, Jr., a sister Patricia “Pat” (Boyea) Thompson, a grandson Stephen Paul Whitley, a granddaughter Rochelle Louise Charron, and a great-granddaughter Olivia Rochelle Charron. Donald "Jim" Burgdorf
Donald "Jim" Burgdorf, 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, February 24, 2025.
Jim was born to the late Harley and Ruth (Taber) Burgdorf on July 31, 1932, in Pulaski, N.Y. He grew up in the Pulaski area and graduated from Pulaski High School in 1950. He continued his education at SUNY Canton, earning a bachelor's degree in engineering.
After college, Jim enlisted in the Air Force, serving from 1955 to 1959 as an air traffic controller in Japan during the Korean War. Upon returning to New York, he worked as an air traffic controller in New York City. However, after an aviation accident changed his perspective, he decided to return to Tupper Lake, where he met Judy, his future wife. They married in the fall of 1963.
Jim spent his career as a Senior Electrical Engineer at Rochester Instrument Systems in Rochester, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. A lifelong ham radio operator (W2FIU), he had a passion for building remote-controlled cars, boats, airplanes and was an excellent artist, as well as constructing his own radios and televisions.
Jim and Judy shared a love for camping, sailing, and fishing, but most of all, they cherished their time spent at camp with family up north.
Donald will be remembered by his loving wife sixty-three years, Judy; his children James "Sam" (Julie Lawler) Burgdorf and Julie (Richard Bromstrup); his grandchildren Justin, Amanda Sarah and Joshua; great-grandchildren Mareyn and Weston; sister-in-law, Rose Burgdorf; his cats, Sarah and Teddy.
Donald was predeceased by his brothers Richard (Betty) Burgdorf and Charley Burgdorf.
The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, Inc., 124 W. Miller St, Newark. Jim's memorial service will follow visitation at 2 p.m.

Curtis Rolley, Jr., 80
Curtis Charles Rolley Jr., 80, of Tupper Lake, passed away on February 17, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Curt was born in Tupper Lake to Curtis and Madeline Rolley on February 4, 1945. He worked as a Therapy Aide for Sunmount DDSO for 25 years and had been retired for 19 years.
He loved spending time with family, such as hunting with his son, going out to fish, and taking day trips with his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda Rolley; his children, Carla (Danny) Wood, Dale (Heather) Rolley; his grandchildren, Kayla, Heather, Jonathan, Hannah, Alaina, Kendra, and Chelsea; his sisters, Patricia, RoseAnn, and Joanne; his eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Ward, Randy, and Mike, and his sisters, Sandy and Diane.
Curt was a hardworking, caring, and loving man whose life was his wife and children.

Mary C. Savard, age 79, of Tupper Lake, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.

Mary was born on May 11, 1945, in Tupper Lake, the daughter of Richard and Catherine Leskoske Guiney. She graduated from Tupper Lake Central School. Mary married Roy Savard on May 1, 1965 at St. Alphonsus Church.
She attended Canton ATC for a few years before raising her five children. After supporting her children, she went to work as an Aide at Sunmount DDSO until she retired.
In addition to being a devoted mother and grandmother, Mary found great joy in the simple pleasures of life.
She had a deep love for music and cherished the moments when she could lose herself in the rhythm of a good tune. She also enjoyed spending time with friends at the VFW, where she felt a sense of camaraderie and belonging.
Whether it was sharing a laugh or enjoying a meal, Mary loved going out to dinner and creating memories with those around her. Above all, her children and grandchildren meant the world to her. She was a loving, selfless mother who raised five wonderful children, and her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family.

Nathan Paul Toohey, 35
Nathan Paul Toohey left this world far too early on February 23rd, 2025, at the age of 35.
Born on September 14, 1989, at Albany Medical Center, he was the son of Paul Toohey Jr. and Bobbie Jo Roberge.
He is survived by his children: Nevaeh, Jayce, Carlee, and Axton Toohey, his companion Brittenie York, his mother, Bobbie Jo (Eric) Drasye; his father, Paul Toohey, Jr.; two brothers, Devin Roberge and Eric Drasye Jr., stepsister Devon Beaudette Imlach, half-brother Payton Toohey. Two nieces Amelia Toohey and Everliegh Roberge and two nephews, Liam and Paxton Toohey.
He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Carol Beaudette, and great-grandmother Beulah Gonyea; his paternal grandparents, Paul Toohey, Sr. and Lynda (Smith) Toohey. Nathan also leaves behind many aunts, uncles and cousins. Predeceased by his pop, Neal Beaudette; his brother Austen Toohey, a half-sister, Paige Toohey, grandfather Robert Roberge, and two uncles Lee and William Gonyea.
Although Nathan got into his share of trouble, and struggled most of his adult life with addiction, he was a kindhearted soul who would help anyone in need, especially his family. Nathan was one of the best wheelie riders, it didn’t matter what kind of bike he was on. When he was younger he loved hunting with his pop. He had a great sense of humor, when he loved something before his addiction he put his all into it. Nathan loved riding Harleys. He loved working construction, especially sheet rocking with his father, being on a machine, rough housing with his cousins, and had a beautiful smile and laugh. Before Nathan's addiction took over, he enjoyed his time with his daughters, Nevaeh and Carlee. He was just starting to build a relationship with his son, Jayce. He also enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.
Many loved Nathan, and we will all remember the good memories that came with having him in our lives. We loved Nathan with every fiber of our bodies, but we now know that sometimes it isn't enough as this disease would not let him go until he was gone.
May you go in peace, Nathan. You are now with your Heavenly Father and your tired and relentless struggle is over. You were a wonderful soul who fought a hard battle. We know that your life was not defined by a drug. We will always love you!

Shirley M. Dechene, 85
A Funeral Mass for Shirley M. Dechene, age 85, of Tupper Lake, was held on Monday, February 17, 2025 at 1p.m. at St. Alphonsus Church with Rev. James Teti officiating. Mrs. Dechene passed away on Monday morning, February 10, 2025 at Adirondack Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
She is survived by her children, Michael Dechene and his wife Diane, of Tupper Lake, Julie Dechene, of Plattsburgh, Debi Fitzwilliam and her husband Gary, of Germantown, MD; five grandchildren, Evan (Brooke) Dechene, Matthew (Olivia) Dechene, McKayla (Jesse) Munn, Nick Fitzwilliam, and Allison Fitzwilliam; great grandchildren, Michael Dechene, Addie Dechene, Leona LaQuay, Nole LaQuay, and Madeline Munn; her siblings, Richard Peets and his wife Carolle, of Tupper Lake, and Nancy Maroun, of Tupper Lake; her special friends, Alanna Fox, Nancy Corrow, and Jean Mozdzier; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; her siblings, Robert Peets, Donald Peets, Theresa Savard, and Gerald Peets.
Shirley was born on May 31, 1939, in Tupper Lake, the daughter of William J. and Maude A. LaCount Peets. She graduated from Tupper Lake Central School in 1956.
She married Donald Dechene August 11, 1957 at St. Alphonsus Church and raised their three children together.
She first went to work at JJ Newberry’s Department Store until it closed then went to work as a Therapy Aide at Sunmount DDSO until her retirement in 2001.
She took great pleasure in creating crossword puzzles and attending cookouts with friends at Woodland Apartments in the community room. In her earlier years, she was known for her love of baking and cooking, particularly her famous Meat Pies. Her apple pies were legendary and beloved by all who tasted them.

MaryLouise Costigan, 63
MaryLouise Costigan, 63, passed away peacefully at Saratoga Hospital on February 13, 2025, after a recent history of medical issues. Born in Tupper Lake on March 31, 1961, daughter of the late John and Roberta Disotell Morris, she was a 1980 graduate of Tupper Lake High School.
MaryLouise met her husband, Christopher J. Costigan at Childs Nursing Home in Albany while working as nurse’s aides, shortly thereafter, he joined the US Navy and she embraced her role as a Navy wife, as they traveled around the world while starting their family.
They had two children, Sean E. and Teresa L. Costigan.
Most recently, she worked as an Activities Assistant at St. Margaret’s Center, Albany. She loved her role helping the children and their families through their medical journeys.
MaryLouise loved and excelled at cooking and enjoyed sewing. She was a Faith Formation teacher at the various churches she and her family attended and also an active member of the Capital District chapter Military Officers Association of America.
Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Christopher, son Sean, daughter Teresa, and brother Francis Morris. She was predeceased by her brother John Morris Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11a.m. at Corpus Christi Church, 2001 Route 9, Round Lake, NY 12151. Calling hours prior to mass, from 9-11a.m., will also be held at the church.

Robert L. Woods, age 97
A Funeral Mass for Robert L. Woods, age 97, of Tupper Lake will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 12:00 PM at St. Alphonsus Church with Reverend James Teti officiating. Calling hours will be held at Frary Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, beginning at 10:30 AM. Burial will take place in the spring at Holy Name Cemetery in Tupper Lake. Robert (Bob/Woody) passed away on February 4, 2025, at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, surrounded by his loving family. Frary Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Tupper Lake has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
Bob is survived by his wife, Mary (Betty) Woods; his children, Maureen and Chuck Johnson of Accokeek, MD; Catherine and Jim Thornberry of Vienna, VA; Rob Woods of Potsdam, NY; his grandchildren, Ana Maria Sines, Michaela Johnson, Collin Johnson, Breanna Johnson, Megan Thornberry, Bridget Thornberry, and Christopher Woods-Jones. He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Patricia Woods-Jones; and his granddaughter, Erin Trimarchi.
Bob was born in Tupper Lake to Henry and Agnes Woods on July 11, 1927. He graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1945. He fondly recalled stories of his youth, selling blocks of ice from Raquette Pond to summer campers at Fish Creek Pond to keep the locals cool. For some time, he worked at the Tupper Lake Free Press before being drafted into the US Army, serving in Germany during the Korean War for two years. After returning home, he joined the Army Reserve which would bring him to Malone every other week and Camp Drum every summer. During this time, he met the love of his life, Betty Dugan, and they were married at St. Alphonsus Church on May 17, 1958. While raising their beautiful family, he worked at Northland Motors as a Parts Manager and continued to serve his country in the US Army Reserve. His last career took place at Sunmount DDSO in Tupper Lake as a Safety/Security Officer before he retired in 1989.
Family and community were important aspects of Bob’s life. He and Betty were founding members of The Wild Center and volunteered as visitor facilitators since its opening in 2006. He played trumpet in the Fireman’s Band for many years. Other favorite hobbies included hiking, camping, and cross-country skiing in his beloved Adirondack mountains, playing ping-pong, and playing in the Men’s softball and bowling leagues. For over 70 years, he sang in the choir and read as a lector at Holy Name/St. Alphonsus churches. In his later years, he prayed many hours a day. He noted on the day before his death that he had read through his favorite prayer book from beginning to end.

Robert William Raum, 93
Robert William Raum, 93, of East Hartford, CT, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, with his daughter Patricia Yandow by his side. He was the loving husband of the late Pauline Bujold Raum for over 51 years and the only child of the late George William and Marie Agnes (Kelly) Raum. He lived in East Hartford for the past 65 years.
Bob was born on July 7, 1931 in Saranac Lake, NY, and grew up in Troy and Albany, NY. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy in Albany and attended Siena College in Loudonville, NY, before enlisting in the Air Force. He proudly served his country as a flight engineer on a B-29 Superfortress under Brigadier General Paul Tibbits. His time in the Air Force left Bob with a lifetime love of all things aviation-related and prompted him to take flying lessons when he was a young man.
In addition to Siena College, Bob also attended Union University, Hartford State Technical College, the University of CT, and the Pratt & Whitney Management School, earning a BS degree.
After his discharge from the Air Force, he worked as a draftsman for General Electric in Schenectady, NY before moving his young family to CT where he had a long career in the defense contractor industry. He was a facility designer and design engineer at Electric Boat, and a facility and design engineer at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. Other related positions he held included project manager, sales engineer, and specifications engineer for various companies in CT. He ended his career as manager, engineer, and consultant at the CT branch of Consultants & Designers, Inc., a technical personnel recruiting firm in East Hartford, from which he retired in 1994.
Bob is survived by his loving children, Mary Raum of Wethersfield; Catherine Raum of Manchester; Paula Raum and her husband William Baillargeon, Jr. of Somers; Robert Raum and his wife Nancy of West Suffield; and Patricia Yandow and her husband Thomas of South Glastonbury. He also leaves his grandchildren, Bernadette Raum White and her husband Danny; Olivia Raum; Andrew Yandow; Aubrey Yandow Craig and her husband Matthew; Sarah Yandow; Tessa Yandow and her fiancé, Jon Spencer; and his great-grandchildren, Bobbie White; and Maurice and Quincy Craig. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his grandson, Joseph Yandow.
Bob was able to live out his life in his home thanks to the devoted care he received from his daughter Patricia and her husband Thomas along with the assistance of his home health aides Peg and Rose. We are more grateful than we can say for the excellent care that everyone provided.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Christopher’s Church, 538 Brewer Street, East Hartford on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at 11 AM. Burial with military honors will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 453 Fairfield Avenue in Hartford. There are no calling hours. Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Douglas “Mugsy” Dunning, 76
Douglas “Mugsy” Dunning, 76, of Tupper Lake passed away on January 29, 2025 in the Adirondak Medical Center, of Saranac Lake, surrounded by his loving family. Frary Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Tupper Lake will be handling the funeral arrangements. A private graveside service will take place at Lakeview Cemetery, Tupper Lake during the spring, for immediate family only.
Douglas was born in Tupper Lake to Charles and Winifred Dunning on December 16, 1948. After graduating high school, he left to serve for the Navy in 1966 for a year. When he returned, he went to work at the Trudeau Institute and Oval Wood Dish factory.
Douglas worked as a handyman for the Village of Tupper Lake for many years, starting on August 24, 1987 until he retired on April 25, 2008. He was a Tupper Lake Fire Department member and belonged to the Spring Hill Hunting Club for over 50 years. Douglas enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, ice fishing, watching the Buffalo Bills and Golf, skating by the ball park, reminiscing over his high school sports, and camping – particularly at Raquette River and on Polywog Pond.
Douglas is survived by his partner of 51 years, Susan Strack of Tupper Lake; his children, Marie Simonds of Holiday Island, AR, Jim and Vickie Strack of Bloomingdale, Brent and Ashley Strack of Lake Clear, and Michael Strack and Bridget Bowman of Tupper Lake; his many grand-children, Tanner Simonds, Justin Ecret, Cody Ecret, Derek Strack, Daniel Strack, Brenan Strack, Baleigh Strack, William Strack, and Katherine Strack; his great-grandchildren, Ella Mae Strack, Bekett Strack, Amani Amell, Mila Amell, and Nile Kennedy; his four brothers, Ronald Dunning, Jim “Dud” Dunning, Christopher “Bear” Dunning, and Brian “Joe” Dunning. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Paul Edward Prenoveau, 70
Paul Edward Prenoveau, aged 70, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 2, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on March 18, 1954, in Tupper Lake, to Joseph Wilfred “Adrian” Prenoveau and Leona Emma Gauthier Prenoveau, where he grew up and was one of eleven children.
He married his high school sweetheart, Jan Mary LaValley on September 25, 1976 in Bristol, CT and became the proud father of eight children and 27 grandchildren (with more to come). His family was his greatest joy and achievement. He was a proud resident of Harwinton, CT and loved raising his family there.
Paul was a very kind, outgoing and generous person. He had the best sense of humor and could always lighten the mood and make anyone laugh. His quick wit and charm made him an instant friend. He loved to be outdoors with his family, hiking, golfing, and traveling. His work ethic was unmatched and proved successful for him in his career. Paul became the founder of PAC Group LLC, a construction management company that he formed in 1996.
PAC Group is now run by his children and many faithful employees. He loved to help those in need and be of service, day or night. His efforts also included aiding and helping orphans in Africa for over 15 years.
Paul also provided years of service with his various callings at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Leona Prenoveau; siblings, Mary Prenoveau, John Adrian “Jack” Prenoveau, David Joseph Prenoveau, Marianne Louise Kelly (Thomas James Kelly Sr.); and his granddaughter Kailey Jaie Prenoveau. He is survived by his beloved wife Jan; his children, Keegan Marie Montero (Mauricio Montero), Zachary Paul Prenoveau (Alyssa Dawn VanTassell Prenoveau), Kylee Rae Sunday (Noah James Sunday), Rebekah Ann Whetten (Dustin Shane “Dusty” Whetten), Mollie Adrienne Mahoney (Justin Sean Mahoney), Tucker Frederick Prenoveau (Nicole Simao Gemo Prenoveau), Kenyon Denver Howells (Daniel “Spencer” Howells Jr.), Jeremina Naa Manko Danso Prenoveau; siblings Robert Ernest “Bob” Prenoveau, Margaret Ellen “Midge” Davidson, Jean Marie LaMere, Patricia Ann “Pat” Madore, Bette Jean Brumlow, Stephen Allen “Steve” Prenoveau; and 26 grandchildren.
The family would like to thank all of the wonderful nurses and caregivers of Valorie Manor for the excellent care and love they have shown Paul over the last few years.

Jeannette Mary (Madore) Gillis
Jeannette Mary (Madore) Gillis, age 94, of Tupper Lake, passed away on January 20, 2025 at the Tupper Lake Center. Arrangements are under the care of Frary Funeral Home, Tupper Lake, NY.
Jeannette was born on December 29, 1930 in Tupper Lake, the daughter of the late Wilfred J. and Melvina (Denis) Madore. She graduated from Holy Ghost Academy in 1949 and later graduated from Albany Business College in 1950.
Jeannette married Roland A. "Sonny" Gillis on June 2, 1952 at St. Alphonsus Church with Reverend Giroux officiating the ceremony. Soon after, Roland was deployed to the Korean Conflict. Jeannette was the owner of Gillis Florist and Greenhouses in Tupper Lake for many years, until her retirement.
Jeannette enjoyed time spent with her family and friends, her floral business of many years, winters traveling, alternating between Florida and Arizona after their retirement, and playing pinochle or piecing a puzzle.
Jeannette is survived by her five children, Deborah A. (John) Stubley of West Falls, N.Y., Michael D. (Lauren) Gillis of Tupper Lake, Patricia Willett of Saranac Lake, Mary B. (Greg) Corrow of Ellsworth, ME and Lisa (Aaron) Moser of New Gloucester, ME. She is also survived by her brother David Madore of Naples, FL, eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, many extended family members and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jeannette was predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Melvina Madore, her husband Roland, a granddaughter Danielle Corrow and a son-in-law, Rodger Willett.
Calling Hours were held at the Frary Funeral Home in Tupper Lake on Monday January 27, 2025 from 4-7p.m. and the Funeral Mass was held at St. Alphonsus Church on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 with the Reverend James Teti officiating. A springtime burial will take place later in May.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial contributions to the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad.
Shirley Dechene
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Dechene, a beloved mother and cherished member of our community. Shirley left us on January 22, 2025, at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness and unforgettable memories.
Born on April 28, 1936, in Saranac Lake, Shirley was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (DeLosh) Duffy. Shirley worked as a dedicated waitress for many years. Many will remember her from Roy’s Restaurant where she formed lasting friendships with colleagues and customers alike and later at Boston Gardens where she was known for her warm smile and excellent service. She then went to work at the L.P. Quinn Elementary school in many roles before finally retiring and enjoying a slower pace with her husband, Donnie.
In 1952, Shirley married the late Ray W. Amell, and together they had 10 children, one of whom was born sleeping and always remained a cherished part of her heart.
In 1987, Shirley married Donald Dechene, who became her partner in life for many years. Together they built a home filled with joy, laughter, and treasured memories. Shirley is survived by her husband Donald Dechene; children, Caren (Norman) Cote, Stewart (Laurie) Amell, Bryan Amell, Alene Amell, Mark (Tracey) Amell, and Holly Amell; stepchildren Michael (Diane) Dechene, Julie Dechene and Debi (Gary) Fitzwilliam. Shirley is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Shirley was predeceased by several loved ones, including her parents William and Elizabeth Duffy, her sister June Stearns, her son Greg Amell, daughter Donna Thomas and daughter Darlene Amell, all of whom she missed deeply. Shirley will be remembered for her deep and abiding love she had for her animals, which was evident to all who knew her. Her home was always filled with the joyful presence of her beloved pets. She found immense happiness in caring for them. Her four-legged companions through the years brought her endless comfort and joy.

Calling hours took place on Monday January 27, 2025, from 11am to 1:30pm at Frary Funeral Home in Tupper Lake, where friends and family gathered to celebrate Shirley's life. Marcella M. Gaudet
Marcella M. Gaudet peacefully passed away on January 18, 2025, in Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid, surrounded by family.
Marcella was born on April 26, 1927, in Tupper Lake, the daughter of Donat and Annette Genier Richer.
She graduated from Holy Ghost Academy in 1945 and earned her Registered Professional Nurse Degree at the School of Nursing Champlain Valley Hospital in 1948.
She married Howard on Sept 25, 1949, at St. Alphonsus Church, together they purchased the Waukesha Cabins on Tupper Lake and raised their family. She sold the Waukesha in 1983.
During this time she also pursued a nursing career at both Mercy General Hospital and at Sunmount DDSO to care and tend to the needs of the community of Tupper Lake.
During her later years, Marcella became a Foster Grandparent and for 10 years worked at Tupper Lake Elementary school. Throughout her life she also enjoyed traveling, cross country skiing, golf, playing cards, bingo and going to casinos. She loved spending time with her children but more importantly her grandchildren and beloved pets.
She is survived by her children, James (Debbie) Gaudet of Rochester, N.Y., Peggy (Jim) Tooley of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Jerry (Elizabeth) Gaudet of Lynnbrook, N.Y., Larry (Paula) Gaudet of Greensboro, GA, and Noonie (Mark Purcell) Gaudet of Boston, MA; her sister Sue (Mark) Lavigne, of Tupper Lake; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband, Howard Gaudet in 1981; a son Thomas in 1960; her parents; and her brothers Bert and Raymond and sisters Theresa, Madeline and Janet.
Calling hours will be held, Friday January 25, 2025, at the Frary Funeral Home in Tupper Lake from 11:30a.m. to 1:30p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held immediately afterward at 2p.m. at St Alphonsus Church with Rev James Teti officiating. Burial will be held in the spring at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
