Douglas “Mugsy” Dunning, 76

Douglas “Mugsy” Dunning, 76, of Tupper Lake passed away on January 29, 2025 in the Adirondak Medical Center, of Saranac Lake, surrounded by his loving family. Frary Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Tupper Lake will be handling the funeral arrangements. A private graveside service will take place at Lakeview Cemetery, Tupper Lake during the spring, for immediate family only.

Douglas was born in Tupper Lake to Charles and Winifred Dunning on December 16, 1948. After graduating high school, he left to serve for the Navy in 1966 for a year. When he returned, he went to work at the Trudeau Institute and Oval Wood Dish factory.

Douglas worked as a handyman for the Village of Tupper Lake for many years, starting on August 24, 1987 until he retired on April 25, 2008. He was a Tupper Lake Fire Department member and belonged to the Spring Hill Hunting Club for over 50 years. Douglas enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, ice fishing, watching the Buffalo Bills and Golf, skating by the ball park, reminiscing over his high school sports, and camping – particularly at Raquette River and on Polywog Pond.

Douglas is survived by his partner of 51 years, Susan Strack of Tupper Lake; his children, Marie Simonds of Holiday Island, AR, Jim and Vickie Strack of Bloomingdale, Brent and Ashley Strack of Lake Clear, and Michael Strack and Bridget Bowman of Tupper Lake; his many grand-children, Tanner Simonds, Justin Ecret, Cody Ecret, Derek Strack, Daniel Strack, Brenan Strack, Baleigh Strack, William Strack, and Katherine Strack; his great-grandchildren, Ella Mae Strack, Bekett Strack, Amani Amell, Mila Amell, and Nile Kennedy; his four brothers, Ronald Dunning, Jim “Dud” Dunning, Christopher “Bear” Dunning, and Brian “Joe” Dunning. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial donations may be made in Douglas’ memory to the Tupper Lake Fire Department, 21 Santa Clara Ave, Tupper Lake, NY 12986, and the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad, 169 Main St, Tupper Lake, NY 12986.
