Nancy (Burgwyn) Lawrence Sargent
From Bloomfield, CT, 96 years old Nancy (Burgwyn) Lawrence Sargent passed away peacefully at the Caleb Hitchcock Care Center on February 20.
Nancy was born February 12, 1924 in Bronxville, N.Y., the daughter of Dudley Bates Lawrence and Katherine Clitherall (Birch) Lawrence and the granddaughter of Sarah Bates Lawrence and William Van Duzer Lawrence, the founder of Sarah Lawrence College, Lawrence Hospital and what is now known as the Lawrence Park Historic District.
She was raised in Bronxville and then Mount Kisco, N.Y., and graduated from the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, CT with the class of 1942.
As a teenager she was quite the adventurer and a precocious soul, traveling solo from New York to Boston, to Alabama to visit relatives on her mother’s side of the family and once to Guatemala on a banana boat to visit a classmate.
Like many in her generation, WWII proved to be a time to leave the beaten track. In Nancy’s case, that involved a trip to Pensacola, FL to help her older brother, Dudley, and his young family. There she met and married Edward Cutler Sargent, a naval aviator. Together they helped the baby boom along with four spirited boys.
Throughout a long life that included many moves from New York to Wyoming, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Connecticut and the early death of her husband in 1977, the two constants remained her deep attachment to family and her life-long connection with the home where she spent nearly every summer of her life, a camp that her father built in 1916 at Big Wolf Lake in the Adirondacks.
Nancy was also a wonderful storyteller with a witty sense of humor, an avid reader, a creative spirit and a strong supporter of the arts, animal rights and the protection of wildlife, serving for years as a volunteer at the Carnivore Preservation Trust in Pittsboro, N.C. She is survived by her four sons: Lawrence of North Royalton, OH, David of Ashburnham, MA, Edward Jr. of Portland, ME and Peter of Bangkok, Thailand; four grandchildren, Kathy (Sargent) Havelka, Elizabeth Sargent, Anne Sargent and Jonathan Sargent; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held later in the spring at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y.

Florence was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. and moved to Childwold in the early seventies where she lived out her golden years. She was the child of Walter H. Fourness and Bertha M. Sellars Fourness.
She was predeceased by her brother and sister in law, Walter H. Fourness (Uncle Chub) and Prudence A. Fourness.
Flo worked at the Childwold Leather Artisan for many years. She loved to garden and plant flowers. She was known as the community greeter, always offering hugs and positive thoughts to anyone who crossed her path.
Flo enjoyed spending countless hours with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Whether it be outside playing in the dirt, laying on the floor with them, reading stories, telling old stories, singing and dancing or just holding them tight. There are no words to describe this woman. She was surely different from the rest. She was what we all hope to be someday: kind, happy, compassionate for others, smart, eccentric, generous, thrifty, creative, loving and most of all, honest.
Over the years Flo became a MeMe and her heart was full, often quietly telling us all: "you are my favorite...shhhhh don't tell!” As we look back, we could all agree she was our favorite and she will be deeply missed. Do not cry for her... just keep smiling.
Memorial donations can be made to her second home a place she truly loved St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 8 Brentwood Street, Tupper Lake, NY. She loved her church family like her own.

Carol is survived by her husband, Thomas Stinnett; her three children, Susanna Stinnett, of Rockfall, CT, Thomas Stinnett and his wife, Victoria, of Westminster, MD, and Scott Stinnett and his wife, Kelly, of Woodstock, MD; seven grandchildren, Justin Stinnett and his wife, Michelle, Lindsy Fortier and her husband, Adam, Thomas Hays Stinnett, Megan Stinnett, Luke Stinnett, Audrey Stinnett and Lilliana Stinnett; four great-grandchildren, Chloe and Joshua Stinnett, Ella and Mason Fortier. She is predeceased by her son Marc Stinnett.
Carol was born on December 31, 1932, in Utica, N.Y., the daughter of Arthur and Margaret Bass Curtis. She was the loving older sister of Nancy Schultz (Whitey), Lynda Hamilton (Brian), and Bruce Curtis (Louise). She attended Rome Free Academy where she met Tom and graduated from Whitesboro High School in 1951.
She married Thomas Stinnett on June 27, 1952 at the Vernon Methodist Church with her uncle, the Rev. Leonard Bass officiating. Carol and Tom met when Carol was 15 and he was 16. They were a devoted couple for 71 years.
Carol attended Notre Dame College of Maryland from 1984 and graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor Degree with Honors in Fine Arts and Photography. With a great love for nature, she devoted her photographic and gardening talents to natural beauty. She crafted gardens and landscapes everywhere she lived. For many years, she and Tom planted, pruned and watered flower pots along the main streets in Tupper Lake for all to enjoy. Carol's photography focused on intimate format landscapes and upon retiring to Tupper Lake in 1995, she and Tom could be found canoeing, hiking and exploring for that perfect shot. Tom complemented her photography with printing, matting and custom frame craftsmanship. Her photography was displayed across the Adirondacks including the Wild Center, Lake Placid Center for the Arts and the Goff-Nelson Memorial Library.
“Upon relocating to the Adirondacks, I experienced every day the myriad of colors, shadows, and changes of the seasons. Each day seem to be more beautiful and colorful to my eyes. I didn’t need to go far to become entranced by the wonderful “sweet light” at early morning or sunset. This light seems to be only encountered in the North Country.” -- Carol Stinnett
Carol volunteered for numerous organizations including Meals on Wheels for over 15 years and the TLC Group which taught seniors exercise and gardening. In 2001, Carol received the Renaissance Award for the beautification projects started by the TLC Group. She also served on the board of the Tupper Lake Library and interviewed Tupper Lake native’s stories, recording them on CD’s for the community to view at the library. Carol received the Senior Citizen of the Year Award by the Franklin County Office of the Aging on June 4th, 2011.
Carol has always been a beloved blessing to her family and friends -- ever-present and ever-kind. Her family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care and dedicated services provided by High Peaks Hospice. Donations in Carol’s memory can be made to High Peaks Hospice
