Mary E Stanton, 84

Mary E Stanton, age 84, died peacefully at home in Long Lake on Sunday, September 22, 2024, with her children and grandchildren around her.

Mary was born in Watertown, NY on December 18, 1939 to Dorris and Clare McQuoid. She later moved to Long Lake and graduated from Long Lake Central School in 1956. She married Arthur Stanton of Long Lake on June 22, 1956. They moved to Middleburg, NY, and then Catskill, NY, to work and raise their family. Mary trained as a medical assistant and served as a medical secretary to several surgeons in the Capital District until her retirement.

Along with being a wife, mother and grandmother, Mary was an avid bridge player and theater-goer. She held season tickets at Capital Repertory Theater in Albany, NY, for 20 years and rarely missed a performance. In addition to her love of live performance, Mary loved classical music. She learned to play the clarinet in her 50’s and performed with the Woodstock Community Orchestra.

Moving back to Long Lake in 2012 brought Mary much joy. She delighted in seeing relatives on a daily basis and meeting old school friends while shopping or in the library. Mary loved reading and talking about the books she read. She was proud of the Long Lake Library, commended it to everyone she met, and served on the Friends Of The Library board.

Mary is survived by her husband, Art, and her three children; Kent Stanton (Eleanor) of Long Lake, Michael Stanton (Nina) of Indian Lake, and Karen Osborn of Palenville, NY. Also surviving are five grandchildren - Erin Stanton Barnes (James), David Reynolds (Rowan), Jared Osborn (Rhiannon), Jack Osborn, Rey Osborn - three great grandchildren - Seneca Reynolds, Malcolm Reynolds, and Arthur Barnes (born May 2024). Mary is also survived by several nieces and nephews who made her final years happy ones.

Mary’s ashes will be interred at Long Lake Cemetery at a private family service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization to which Mary donated year after year. Additionally, donations may be made to High Peaks Hospice who showed great care and compassion for Mary and helped her family keep her comfortable at home until the end.

Donald LaBarge, 92

Donald P. LaBarge, 92, of Tupper Lake, died peacefully at home on September 10, 2024 after being lovingly attended by his devoted family. He was born in Malone, N.Y. on March 10, 1932.

The Funeral Mass was on Friday, September 13, 2024 at 3p.m. at St. Alphonsus Church.

 Arrangements were entrusted to Frary Funeral Home, Tupper Lake.

Don was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He believed and lived that the measure of a man was in how he took care of his family.

He married the love of his life, Nancy Everest, on November 17, 1951, and had four daughters: Jody (m. Milt Allione), PJ LaBarge, Shelley (m. Wallace Thomas), and Alicia (m. Rick Retrosi). He was also blessed with raising Christopher Farina, his nephew (m. Dee DeLeeuw).

He has 10 grandchildren: Jennifer Fenwick (Laguna Beach, CA), Carrie Pierce (Panama City, Panama), Stef Rosenzweig (Seattle, WA), Nicholas Retrosi (Costa Rica), Samantha Retrosi (Saranac Lake, NY), Erica Retrosi (Icy Strait, AK), Arielle Retrosi (Annecy, France), Eric Allione (Prescott, AZ), Demi Larkin (Cary, NC) and Cala Farina (Denver, CO). He also has three great-grandchildren: Savannah Pierce, 12, and Raffi Rosenzweig, 10, and Crosby Rosenzweig, 8.

He was predeceased by his father, Berton LaBarge, his mother Beulah LaBounty LaBarge and his siblings Willard, Bert, and Helen Kennison. His only surviving brother, Bob LaBarge, and his wife, Sue, still live in Tupper Lake.

Don was an exceptional athlete at Tupper Lake High School, where he was an All-Northern football and basketball athlete. He was part of the 1948-1949 Northern League Pennant Winners and Class A Playoff Champions basketball team, that still holds a record 18 straight winning streak, the only undefeated team in a 40-year history of the league. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and the volunteer manager of the K. of C. hall for many years. He was an avid golfer and Twilight League player for most of his life and was also part of the volunteer group that replaced the grass on the back nine of the Tupper Lake Country Club.

He was a partner of C.E.L .Lumber for many years where he and his partners, Bob Chartier and Phil Edwards held a stellar reputation for quality products and residential and commercial construction in the Tri- Lakes area.

George L. Staves

George L. Staves of Plattsburgh, NY formerly of Tupper Lake, NY died unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, with his wife beside him. Born in Tupper Lake, to Yvette Delair Staves and Edward Staves. He had a wonderful happy childhood filled with many aunts, uncles and cousins. The love and devotion he was given he shared with Carol’s parents when ill health required help. His Mother’s New Year's Day spaghetti feast was an event to look forward to. (Carol got the recipe!) He married the love of his life, Carol Bujold Staves on May 15, 1965, they in turn were blessed with two children, Christine Staves Young & Mark E. Staves. From Mark (& Lisa Chesbrough) came Jayson Staves (Kaylea) who brought to the family great granddaughters Olivia & Ava Newstead and twins Lyra & Kaida Staves born June 4, 2024 and Braydon a Senior at TLHS. Daughter Christine and Len Young welcomed Corey of Gouvernor, NY, his children Taylor, Blake, Ella, Sullivan & Quinton. Megan of Tupper Lake, & Jordan “Tino” (Sarah Robinson) Young of Buffalo NY. There are 2 special “nieces” whom he loved dearly, Amy Seguin of Morrisonville NY and Margo Turner Bogard of Marion, NY. He leaves his brother Richard (Gwen) of Tupper Lake. His brother in laws, Roger Bujold (LaVeta) Nampa I D, Scott (Tina) of San Diego CA, Monica (Mark) Buhler & Stan. Bill Bujold (Lona). His sister-in-law, Bonnie St. Dennis (Bill), as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

George served and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy 1960-1964. His destroyer, Escort, was involved in the ‘Bay of Pigs’ Cuban Crisis.

Upon discharge he worked at White’s Electric, the Draper Corp, and Wm.C. Johnson Construction, a job he really liked and with the men he worked with. He went to work at Sunmount DDSO in 1968, retiring in April 1998. He made fasting friendships, Cliff Varden is one of those blessed friendships to this day. During his later years he developed relationships with several “clients”, leading to his becoming an advocate for Frankie and Legal Guardian to Fred. Fred was always at family gatherings and is buried in the family plot.

Shortly after his retirement, to keep active and involved with the community, he became the Altamont Code Enforcement and Zoning Officer. He served with dignity and honor. Upholding the oath, he swore to uphold and to provide his knowledge for the safety of others. During his days of leisure and relaxation, he, his brother Dick and friend, (often thought of mistakenly as his brother) Henry Staves became Boy Scout Leaders and Scout Masters. How he enjoyed his days with “my guys” and the activities involved. His skills as a scout master helped him survive when he became “misplaced” (not lost) in the Adirondack woods.  In the 80’s he briefly left state service and was hired as Caretaker of the American Legion Mt. Camp. How he enjoyed the physical labor, the carpentry skills he had honed and known or unknown to him, the compliments of his skills as both a “boss” and “handyman” received on his behalf. He always saw himself in others and how he wanted to be treated. He was a very creative carpenter beautifying his homes.  Carol’s favorite creation was the library he built for her in their home on Blueberry Hill. His children were his joy. How he hated to see them grow up and to become the independent people they are today.  George also enjoyed Fish Creek camping, boating, water skiing, and canoeing.

Over the years his health became fragile requiring a “snowbird” move to Florida. Once there he became a candidate for a double lung transplant at Tampa General Hospital. He was on the list for nine months before receiving donor lungs from a murdered Tampa Police Officer. Officer David Curtis gave him his new life 6/10/2010.  These fourteen plus years, George did acknowledge that each day was a gift, and he said many times, “we have had a wonderful life based upon the misfortune of others”.

His name will be a blessing forever.

Margaret Price Sunderman

Margaret “Margie” Price Sunderman, 72, of Cazenovia, NY passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. She was born October 24, 1951 in West Chester, Pennsylvania to Harrie B. Price 3rd and Alice W. Price. Margie grew up in Moorestown, New Jersey and spent summers at her family’s boys camp, Flying Moose Lodge, on Craig Pond in East Orland, Maine. She was a graduate of Moorestown Friends School in 1970 and Cazenovia College in 1972. She was the office manager for her husband's family business, Sunderman's Plumbing and Heating, and later Gary's Electric and Plumbing. In 1992, Margie and Gary moved to Long Lake, NY. In 2002, they moved to Bradenton, Florida where she was employed as a clerk with the Sarasota County Court System. They retired and returned to Cazenovia, NY in 2015. Margie was a very caring person and loved to talk about her family and her extended family. She was very talented and enjoyed sewing, needlework, quilting and knitting. Margie gifted many of her creations to her family and friends for special occasions as well as donating 100’s of knitted hats to charity.

Margie is survived by her husband of 52 years, Gary; her daughters, Jennie (Ben) Stowell and Erin (Chuck Rose) Sunderman both of Cazenovia; her beloved grandchildren, Joey and Sophie Diana; her brother, Chris (Shelly) Price of Bar Harbor, Maine; her brother-in-law, Mark (Jan) Sunderman of Chittenango; brother-in-law, Tom Parker of Gwynedd, Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Holly Price of Farmington, Maine; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Polly Price, her brother, Harrie B. Price IV and brother-in-law Bud Sunderman.

Rosemarie B. Lang

A Mass of Christian Burial for Rosemarie B. Lang "Mum", 81, of Tupper Lake will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 10a.m. at St. Alphonsus Church with Rev. James Teti as celebrant. Burial will follow the Funeral Mass and will be held at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Mrs. Lang died unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

Rosemarie B. Lang was born on June 4, 1943 in Leicester, VT and was the daughter of the late Francis and Rose (White) Gearwar. She attended schools in Vermont and operated a farm with her first husband in Crown Point, N.Y.

She will be remembered as an excellent cook, for her enjoyment of collecting porcelain dolls, knitting, volunteering at the Adirondack Adult Center and for her everlasting love for animals.

She is survived by her partner of 30 years Raymond Bigrow, her son William Lang and his wife, Theresa, of Bridport, VT and her brother George Gearwar of Vermont. She is also survived by her grandchildren.

Ellen Nadia Aseel Maroun, 84

Ellen Nadia Aseel Maroun, 84, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on September 3, 2024, at Adirondack Medical Center.

Ellen was born December 25, 1939, to Fadwa and Alfred Aseel in Tupper Lake, NY where she grew up with her sisters Adele, Alfreda, Linda and her brother Alfred.

Wife, mother, grandmother (Sitti), auntie, friend, activist. Ellen’s impact reached far and wide. Her thirst for learning and passion for reading were unmatched and she encouraged others to do the same.

In 1962, Ellen married Camil G. Maroun, Jr. with whom she raised 3 children, Nadia, Gina, and David. It was in the mid 1960’s, with the birth of Gina who was born disabled, that she advocated for and brought services for the developmentally disabled to the region, founding the Franklin County Association for Retarded Children.

Her activism continued to evolve over the years, starting locally and expanding statewide in gubernatorial appointed positions. She co-authored the Bill of Rights for People in Community Residence Settings, which became law in New York State. She worked with families impacted by traumatic brain injury and chaired the Healthcare Association for New York State. She served as President of the Sunmount Board of Visitors and subsequently for the New York State Board of Visitors. Ellen served on the Franklin County Community Services Board; the Adirondack Medical Center Board and she remained a surrogate decision maker for New York State ARC.

As an adviser to the Aseel Legacy Fund, she continued her focus on community by awarding grants to projects that will enhance and improve the Tupper Lake Community, including the Tupper Lake Heritage Trail, Tupper Lake Arts, Wild Center, Sky Center, Little Loggers, the History Museum, and an annual scholarship for nontraditional students wishing to reinvent their future.

Ellen was honored with awards and accolades that celebrated her contributions, including the Governor’s Women of Distinction, the Adirondack Museum Founder’s Award, The Franklin County Liberty Bell Award, and a North Country Citation from St. Lawrence University.

Most of all, Ellen was a force for her family. She believed that you honor your past and you create your future. She led by example, with empathy, determination, selflessness, and love. She is survived by her loving husband Camil (JJ) Maroun, Jr., her children, Nadia Maroun-Barkamian (Ardo), Camil David Maroun (Gabriela), and Gina Maroun, her grandchildren Michael Hendry (Hayden), Camil Maroun, and Emilio Maroun and great-granddaughter, Adeline Hendry, her sister Linda Aseel Kahn (Joe) and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins who adored their Auntie and will carry her legacy forward. She was predeceased by her siblings, John Aseel, Adele Mikesell, Freda Aseel Bradt, Alfred Moneer Aseel and her grandson, Matthew David Hendry.

Apolinario A. Torno, M.D.

Apolinario A. “Paul” Torno, 83, of Tupper Lake, passed away at his home on Monday, August 26, 2024 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. Per his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home, Tupper Lake.

He is survived by his wife, Daphne “Tutti” Torno; his children, Michael Torno, of Rochester, Sebold Torno and his wife Sue, of Rochester, and Pamela Torno and her husband Steve Weiss, of Oakland, CA; his step-son, Eric Staves and his wife Kim, of Odessa, FL; three precious grandchildren, Colin, Avery, and Emma Staves; brother-in-law, David Carrow, of Dennis, MA; sisters-in-law, Judi Snyder and Diane (Michael) Dechene, both of Tupper Lake; special nephews, Evan and Matthew Dechene, both of Tupper Lake; and many relatives in the United States and Philippines. He is predeceased by his father-in-law Charles Carrow, mother-in-law, Eileen Carrow and sister-in-law, Barbara Carrow.

Paul was born on July 23, 1941, in St. Ignacia, Tarlac, Philippines, the son of Alfonso and Godofreda Aviguetero Torno.

He graduated from Santa Tomas Catholic University in 1960 and Santa Tomas School of Medicine in 1965 before moving to the United States in 1966. Paul did a fellowship in Cardiology and went to work for Sunmount DDSO in 1989 as a board-certified Medical Internist, retiring in 2007.

He married Daphne Ann Carrow on June 26, 2003 in Saranac Lake. Paul was a self-taught photographer and many of his pictures hang on the walls at Adirondack Medical Center and at his home.

Lucille Levesque, 93

Lucille Levesque, 93, of Tupper Lake, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

Lucille was born on July 20, 1931, in Tupper Lake, the daughter of the late George and Rita (Poirier) Chaisson. She married the love of her life, Paul Levesque, on December 11, 1948 and celebrated 56 years of marriage before his passing in August 2005.

Lucille attended Tupper Lake Central School. She was a housewife until 1968 when she went to work at Mercy Living Center as a Nurse’s Aide. In 1979, she became the bookkeeper for her husband and son’s business, Adirondack Auto and Diesel Repair, retiring in 1999.

Lucille enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She took great joy in hearing about their adventures and achievements. She was renowned for her exceptional cooking and baking skills, making every holiday meal truly special. The planning of the meal was always a well thought out process and preparations for the meal began days in advance. She fussed over every detail and wanted things to be just right for the family to enjoy. Once the meal was complete, Lucille was never one to let dirty dishes sit on the table, she had to be up cleaning them, despite her family’s efforts to get her to sit and relax a bit. Her cakes and cookies were often a staple at family gatherings and the cakes often had specific directions on how they should be cut. Her special occasion cakes at family birthdays and holiday gatherings were always impressive.

Lucille always kept herself busy and even took up painting as one of her hobbies, she enjoyed painting landscapes. Lucille had excellent sewing skills and was very particular about her clothing, if she didn’t like the length or fit of her clothing, she would make alterations herself.

She kept a clean and tidy home and often complained that she didn’t even have time to read the paper. Family and friends of Lucille often joked that her floors were so clean they could eat off them.

She is survived by her brother, Mark (Sue) Lavigne of Tupper Lake; her sister, Teresa Beauvert, of Lebanon, NH; her son, Gary Levesque, of Tupper Lake; her grandchildren, Nicholas (Anya Villeneuve) Levesque, of Tupper Lake, Lindsey (Tristan) Cairns, of West Chazy, Miles (Sarah) Levesque, of Manlius, John Paul Dewyea, of Vermontville, Darcy (David) Turcott, of Tupper Lake, and Mark Dewyea, of Tupper Lake; her great-grandchildren, Hudson and Blake Cairns, Poppy Levesque, Meredith and Lucille Levesque, Morgan Sharlow, and Kelsey Dewyea; her great-great-grandchild Oaklynn Sharlow; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by her daughter, Pauline Dewyea, son-in-law, John (Jack) Dewyea; her daughter-in-law, Lynda Levesque; her brothers, Norman “Babe” Chaisson and Raymond Chaisson.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024 at 11AM at St. Alphonsus Church with Rev. James Teti officiating. Burial will follow the Mass in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Cecile Jarvis

Cecile Jarvis passed away peacefully on August 28, 2024 at the Alice Center in Malone, N.Y. where she had been residing over the last few years.

She was born Cecile Agnes LaLumiere on April 13, 1929 in Tupper Lake, to proud parents Damien Alexander LaLumiere and Eugenie Marie Nadon LaLumiere.

Cecile attended both elementary and high school in Tupper Lake as well as local community college. She worked in a variety of capacities throughout her life, both here and in New York City. She was involved with religious education and assisted the Tupper Lake School system.

During her life, Cecile provided transcription and translation services as she was fluent in French. She often told stories of her role as "Mother Goose" at Santa's workshop. Later in life, Cecile worked as a volunteer with Mercy Care for the Adirondacks.

Cecile was an avid reader and fostered her love of writing throughout her involvement with the Tupper Lake Writer's Group for many years. She loved nature and saw beauty in the small things that many of us take for granted. These things were often the subject of her many poems. Cecile loved God and embraced her Catholic faith here at St. Alphonsus and Holy Name of Jesus Parish throughout her life.

Cecile married her beloved husband Norman Jarvis on October 28, 1953 and they made their home here in Tupper Lake. Cecile was predeceased by her loving husband Norman, who died in 2006; parents Damien and Eugenie LaLumiere, an older sister Marguerite who blessed this world for 11 months, Tupper Lake cousin Fluerette Rolley, brothers-in-law Howard Jarvis and Lester (Kay) Jarvis, sister-in-law Betty Jarvis, niece Jane Carter and great-niece Hannah Baker.

Cecile leaves behind sisters-in-law Shirley Foltz of Kennesaw, Georgia, Phyllis Jarvis of New Hartford, NY, Yulah Jarvis of Clark Mills, NY, brother-in-law Marshall Jarvis and his wife Mary of Conway, S.C., as well as many nieces and nephews.

Cecile also leaves behind family in Canada. She shared many stories of visits to Cornwall as a child and young woman. Adventures on her uncle's farm with cousins such as Bea Nadon and others were spoken of often. She will be dearly missed by her niece, Lisa Jones and her husband Dennis.

Afterwards, there will be a burial ceremony for both Don and Jean Anne at the cemetery. A celebration of a life will follow from 1p.m .to 5p.m. at P-2's Irish Pub in the Junction.

Beulah Dechene, 86

Beulah A. Dechene, 86, of Tupper Lake, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, August 17, 2024, at the Tupper Lake Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by the love of her family. Graveside services will be held at 3p.m. at St. Alphonsus Cemetery on Saturday, September 14, 2024, with Pastor David Boyea officiating.

Beulah is survived by her devoted husband, Dennis Dechene; her cherished daughters, Heidi (Michael) Cheney and Brenda (Mark) Carter; step-children, William (Rachel) Dechene and Katie (Joel) Locke; along with many adored grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who brought joy to her life and was affectionately known as “Moomaw.”

She is predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Agnes (Disotell) Montion, three sons, Theodore (Teddy), Michael, and Martin Bourbeau, her siblings, Rita LaFrance, Maurice Montion, and Mary Jane Gehrlein; and her husband, James Bourbeau and husband, Steven Konkoski.

Born on July 3, 1938, in Tupper Lake, Beulah was a bright and compassionate soul who touched the lives of many. A proud graduate of Tupper Lake Central School, Class of 1956, Beulah devoted her early years to nurturing her family and home. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish S and B Crafts, a beloved local business where she crafted beautiful ceramic figurines and decorative pieces, a testament to her creative flair and dedication.

Beulah’s talents extended beyond ceramics. She was a passionate painter, an avid crafter, a skilled guitarist and published author titled “Death is Never Convenient.” Her artistic endeavors brought beauty and joy to those around her. Her warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Alan E. Payment, 81

Alan Everard Payment, 81, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 with his devoted wife, Sami by his side in Cottage Grove, Oregon.

The eldest of the three sons of William and Irene Robinson Payment, Alan was born in the family home on Pine Street in the Tupper Lake Junction on July 18, 1943.

He spent his early schooling at the Faust Elementary School and then rode the bus to the Tupper Lake High School, completing his basic education there with his graduation in 1961. During the summers, he worked with Duke Delair and the Little League baseball program.

Alan began his college work at SUNY Albany and later transferred to SUNY Potsdam. There he received his BA in Elementary Education in 1966. Alan began teaching in the Edwards Elementary School.

While still in college he and Margaret “Peggy” Kirkbride were married in Oneonta where she attended college.

He was always fascinated by the legal system and the lawyers’ role in it. So after being a teacher for three years, Alan and his wife Peggy moved to San Diego, California. There he enrolled in law school and became an attorney.

Alan and Peggy lived in San Diego for many years enjoying what the city had to offer. Always a dedicated Dodger fan, Alan was delighted to be only two hours from Dodger Stadium. One of his favorite pastimes was training for marathon running, and during his time in California, he reached his goal of participating in the New York City marathon.

When he retired from the law, he began searching for a small town on the West Coast that reminded him of his roots in Tupper Lake. Cottage Grove, Oregon filled that bill. Bag and baggage, he returned to small town life. There he met and married his second wife, Virginia Louise “Sami” Payment. The region's long, wet summers, made it easy for him to cultivate a garden of prize winning tomatoes and miniature fruit trees.

Alan leaves two brothers, Barry Payment of Tupper Lake and Florida and Dale Payment of New Mexico, two sisters, Carol Payment Poole of Saranac Lake and Cindy Obert of Thompson, CT. Also surviving Alan are nieces and nephews, Calli Shelton, Sherry Fieroh, Joseph Poole, Lesley Sojda and Amy Banker who will always remember the role his personal warmth and sense of humor played in their lives.

Lorraine P. LaValley

Lorraine P. LaValley, of 5 Becky Ave., Tupper Lake, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Lorraine was born in Keeseville, N.Y. on April 8, 1931, the daughter of Raymond and Gertrude Dean Pray. Lorraine married Donald B. LaValley August 11, 1951. Don predeceased her on December 20, 1998.

Known as Oma to her family, Lorraine had many interests - with the most important being time with her family. When her children were younger, she was very involved in a variety of organizations to make sure her children developed a strong sense of community.

A true entrepreneur, she co-founded the original Market Place; owned and operated the Sunset Park Motel; owned and operated LaValley's Woodshed; and was a part of the family real estate business, LaValley Real Estate.

Lorraine loved to travel and visited many different places both in the US and abroad. She enjoyed talking about her upbringing on the family farm and how it was a good day when she could ride her horse to school. Her years on the farm taught her the best way to grow and maintain vegetables, flowers and other plants. And, growing up in a family of all boys, she learned quickly to develop a strong personality with a very big heart.

She is survived by her three children, Donna (Tom) Sloan, James (Laura) LaValley, Susan (Mark) Moeller; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She predeceased by her husband; her parents; and her six brothers, Wayne, Vernon, William, Clifford, Raymond, and Ronald.

Per Lorraine’s wishes there will be no public calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate her life was held on Monday, August 19, 2024 at 11a.m. at St. Alphonsus Church with burial to follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Constance “Connie” Denis, 80

A Funeral Mass for Constance “Connie” Denis, age 80, of Tupper Lake, will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 12 noon at St. Alphonsus Church with Rev. James Teti officiating. Burial will take place following the Mass at St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Mrs. Denis passed away on Sunday night, August 11, 2024 at Adirondack Medical Center surrounded by her loving husband, son and extended daycare family.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Charles “Chuck” Denis; her son, Gary Denis and his wife Sharon, of Lusby, MD; her brother-in-laws, Mike Denis and his wife Kathy, of Melbourne, FL and Jay Denis and his wife Karen, of Chelsea, MA; her adopted daycare children, Rachel, Nathan, Rebecca, Katie, and Roger; her furry grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is predeceased by her parents and sister-in-law, Sally Clement.

Connie was born on December 9, 1943, in Tupper Lake, the daughter of the late Buck and Myrtle Booking. She graduated from Tupper Lake Central School in 1960.

She married Chuck Denis on September 23, 1961 at St. Alphonsus Church. Connie ran a child daycare from her home in Tupper Lake and was one of the first licensed daycare providers in Franklin county. Through her years of childcare, she touched many lives of those in the community.

Connie lived for her grandchildren, finding her greatest joy in being a part of their lives. Her role as a grandmother extended beyond her own family becoming an “adopted” grandmother to many.

Curtis D. Parent

Curtis D. Parent went to his final resting place with the Lord on August 10, 2024. Curtis was on a planned fishing trip in Alamosa, CO with his good friend David Martinez when he passed.

He was born December 3, 1961 in Olathe, KS to Richard and Louise (Caron) Parent.

He attended schools in Germany, Connecticut, Oklahoma, New Jersey, Kansas, New York and California, graduating from Jakarta International School in Jakarta, Indonesia. He was an honor student excelling in academics and athletics. He went on to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School, Fort Monmouth, NJ, and attended the U.S Military Academy at West Point, NY. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in May 1980.

Curtis earned his bachelor of science degree in Engineering from Texas A & M University and subsequently a Masters Degree in Engineering from Texas Tech University. He was employed by E-Systems, Garland, TX, Raytheon Corp and L3 Corp where he retired as Director of Business Development, Greenville, TX. He retired in 2018 and relocated to Indialantic, FL where he resided at the time of his death.

Curtis was an active member in the Rockwall - Heath community, coaching girls soccer, softball, and basketball, and YMCA father-daughter organizations.

Curtis was a loving father, son and brother and friend to many. In his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his friend and companion Regi Miller, traveling, hanging at the beach, fishing, golf and was an avid supporter of Texas A & M Aggie sports teams.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Louise Parent, a brother Devin Parent, daughters - Devanne Parent, Paige Parent and Brooke Parent, and his former wife and mother of his children, Cyndi Parent.

Curtis was a former communicant of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Rockwall.

Dr. Richard J. DiStefano

Dr. Richard J. DiStefano passed away August 19th, 2024, at Crouse Hospital following a tragic accident during a triathlon in Cazenovia, N.Y.

He was the youngest of three sons born to Guido and Mary DiStefano, of Tupper Lake.

He was salutatorian of his Tupper High class of 1976, and earned All Northern Honors in football and baseball, enjoying both team sports as well as ice hockey.

Rick graduated from Yale University with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering in 1980 and afterwards worked with International Paper.

He then graduated from SUNY Upstate Medical University in 1989 and finished his orthopedic surgical training in 1995. He worked as a spine surgeon for Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists, having privileges at many local hospitals, and dutifully serving the people of Central New York. First and foremost, he was an amazingly loving and devoted husband, father, uncle, and friend.

Dr. DiStefano is survived by his wife Sheryl, daughter Kathryn, both of Jamesville, N.Y.; sons David (Libby) of Denver, CO; Daniel of Boston, MA; brother James (Anne) of Dewitt, N.Y.; nephews James Jr. (Joanna) and nieces Antonia and Olivia of Oakland, CA; Joseph (Courtney) and niece AnnaLeigh and nephew Luca of Marietta, GA; nephew Matthew of Mantauk Falls, NY; niece Lauren of Austin, TX; and multiple other DiStefano relatives.

Timothy Charles Roscoe

Timothy “Turkey” Charles Roscoe, of Piercefield NY, passed away on August 12, 2024.

Tim was born in Tupper Lake to Patricia (Sabre) and Robert Roscoe on September 23rd 1958.

Tim attended elementary school in Piercefield and then in Tupper Lake. He graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1977. In high school Tim played football and ran on the track team. After graduation, in 1979, Tim joined the United States Marine Corps with his life time best friend Steve Cheney. Tim’s served as a sergeant before being discharged in 1983.

Tim spent 24 years in Nashville, Tennessee before moving back to New York where he lived for the last two years of his life.

Tim is preceded in death by his mother Patricia Roscoe, and father Robert Roscoe. Tim is survived by his daughter April Roscoe of Kingston N.Y., and his son Jeffrey Roscoe of Nashville, TN. He is also survived by his sisters Susan Roscoe of Kingston, NY, Penny Roscoe of Port Ewen, NY and Beverly (Roscoe) Goodrich and, brother in-law John Goodrich of Tupper Lake, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and grandchildren Sophia Borden and Nero Bernard of Kingston and Chelsea Roscoe of Vermont.

There will be a “Peace Out Party” for Tim Saturday, October 5th, 2024. Details will be posted at a later date. A grave side service and burial will be held Sunday, October 6th, 2024 at the Gail Cemetery, Piercefield.

Kristina Breitmeyer, 70

Kristina M. Breitmeyer, 70, passed away after a two-year battle with cancer on Thursday, August 1, 2024, with loved ones by her side.

Born January 4, 1954, in Wyandotte, Michigan and was the daughter of Fritz and Arvilla (Wohlin) Vikstrom.

Kris graduated from Andover High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1971. She then went on to graduate from University of Michigan for Natural Resources in 1974, and from Michigan State University for Horticulture in 1976.

On June 19, 1976, Kris married the love of her life and always her best friend, Bruce W. Breitmeyer in Gregory, Michigan. The two were happily married for 48 years.

Before opening her own flower shop, Kris worked at Neilsen’s Flower Shop and Greenhouse in Ann Arbor, Michigan, MSU Cooperative Extension Service in Lansing, Michigan and Mountainside Florist in Tupper Lake.

Since she had a green thumb and an eye for design, Kris went on to open Trillium Florist in Tupper Lake in May of 1985, which she owned and operated for 38 years, finally closing its doors in December of 2023.

She loved to see people happy with flowers whatever the occasion.

In Kris’s free time, she enjoyed landscaping and doing numerous improvement projects on her and her husband’s home and bird watching,

In addition to her parents, Kris was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Febe and John Vikstrom of Michigan; maternal grandparents, Catherine and John Wohlin of Michigan; brothers, Erik A. Vikstrom, and Lars G. Vikstrom of Michigan; and nephew, Nils A. Vikstrom of Michigan.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Bruce W. Breitmeyer of Glens Falls; sister, Kerstin I. Vikstrom of Mesa, Arizona; aunts and uncles, Dennis and Dorothy Vikstrom of Washington, Michigan, Robert and Sandy Vikstrom of Anderson, South Carolina, Mary Zurakowski of Richmond, Michigan, and Mary Ann Vikstrom of Utica, Michigan; in-laws, Douglas and Pamela Soules of Coos Bay, Oregon; nieces and nephews, Erik J. Vikstrom of White Lake, Michigan, Andrea (Tim) Johnson of Mesa, Arizona, Melissa Smallwood of Litchfield Park, Arizona, Paul Smallwood Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona, Kiel Smallwood of Gilbert, Arizona, Luke Soules of San Luis Obispo, California, and Rebecca Soules of Harrodsburg, Kentucky; and her pet, Sebastion.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. A memorial gathering will be held at a future date.

Joseph J. Smith Jr., 50

Joseph J. Smith, Jr., 50, of Tupper Lake, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday evening, July 31, 2024 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT.

Joe was born on March 3, 1974 in Amsterdam and was the son of Joseph J. Smith, Sr. and the late Christina Walker Smith.

He spent most of his younger years in Galway and as a teenager, moved to Tupper Lake where he graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1993.

Joe had a long career as a Corrections Officer, working in many New York State Prisons including Clinton County Correctional Facility in Dannemora and Adirondack Correctional Facility in Ray Brook.

He loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and riding his side-by-side. Joe was an excellent cook and enjoyed making meals for his family and friends. He also enjoyed snuggling with his pets, Blaze and Freddy. But none of this compares to the love and admiration he had for his daughter, Kearstan. He regularly bragged to anyone that would listen about how amazing she was, and often expressed that she was his true inspiration in life.

In addition to his mother, Joe is predeceased by his grandfather, Alfred Smith and his grandmother, Jane Smith.

He is survived by his beloved daughter, Kearstan Smith (Tyler Chiasson) of Tupper Lake; his father, Joseph J. Smith, Jr. of Galway; his step-mother, Tracey Smith of Galway; his love, Paula Canell, and her son Cole Canell of Greenfield Center; his brothers and sisters, Michael Smith (Lexie) of Middle Grove, Brandon Smith of Galway, Dustin Smith (Kayla) of Galway, Kaitlin Smith and Karli Smith also both of Galway; His grandchildren, Leah Strader, Matthew Chiasson, and Sadie Chiasson; and many nieces and nephews.
