Obituaries

Ola Demers,82

Dan McClelland

On Saturday, June 11, 2022, Ola Albion Demers (born Radloff), loving mother of six children, passed away peacefully at age 82.

Ola was born on July 5, 1939, in St. Regis Falls, New York, to Louis and Ethel (Sochia) Radloff. She graduated from Tupper Lake Junior and Senior High School, and on August 10, 1957, she married Clifton Herbert Mandigo, Jr. They had two sons, Kyle and Todd, and two daughters, Lou Ann and Tammy. In 1972, she remarried to James Eli Fletcher. They had two daughters, Jesse and Billi Jo.

Ola had a passion for adventure, and she always loved the beach. Although most of her life was spent in the Adirondacks, several of her early adult years were spent living and traveling throughout the country - ultimately making her way all the way to California! Ola had a beautiful singing voice, entertaining friends and family with traditional and original songs. She had a strong, independent spirit, speaking her mind and standing up for what she believed in. She also had an incredible sense of humor, coupled with an infectious laugh!

A smile always accompanied the face of any family member who mentioned Ola, affectionately called Nani by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Over the past year, she had even become pen pals with one of her great-grandchildren, Elias, sending fun stickers and stories back and forth. She always made sure to let us know she loved us, parting ways with "Ma loves ya" or "Nani loves you!" A sentiment we all still hold in return for her and always will.

Ola was predeceased by her parents, her two sons, Kyle and Todd Mandigo, and her sister, Alice. She is survived by four of her children: Lou Ann Rice; Tammy Plausteiner and her husband, Tim; Jesse Fletcher and her partner, Shawn; Billi Fletcher and her partner, Darryl; along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ola will be sadly missed by her many friends and family members who will continue to treasure their happy memories with her forever. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2022, at the Frary Funeral Home in Tupper Lake at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed directly by a burial ceremony at the Holy Name Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at: 22 East Rounds Street, Tupper Lake, NY 12986.

In 1958 he began installing aluminum siding for a home improvement company; from there he started his own business and was self-employed the rest of his life; he had several businesses. He purchased his first home in ‘66 in Mineola where he enjoyed remodeling it, swimming in his pool, building and flying remote control planes, restoring his precious 1911 Cadillac Touring car and showing it at car shows as well as transporting several brides and grooms at local weddings. He also had lots of fun coaching little league and hockey as well as attending his children’s events, recitals and concerts. Another joy was raising, breeding and showing their Great Danes.

In 1971, the 36-acre property that he purchased in Long Lake, NY became his family’s home in 1980 until present day, where he started a small working farm by clearing all the land, designing and building the house, barn, garage/shop, followed by post and beam cabin, 6-unit convertible motel and eventually Donna's yarn shop. He was a logger, driving his truck long hours and built many homes and camps as well as kitchen and gun cabinets, tables, Adk chairs, and repairing anything made out of wood, including spinning wheels. He loved participating in the local town events including the LL 100 miler and parades with the farm animals, horses, carriage and log truck. He was always one to ‘do whatever it takes’ to get the job done and also ‘willing to lend a hand, if he could’. He was a loving, caring ‘bratt’ husband, dad and provider, and was always able to give that little extra help to his family when they needed him. Bob was also very wise, as he would always shout out some phrase like, “Be careful driving on wet leaves” or “To stay out of a situation, don’t get into one”. He will be forever loved and missed.

A very nice service and calling hours were held Friday, May 13, 2022 at the LL United Calvary Methodist Church. There will be a graveside service at the Long Lake Cemetery, Saturday May 28, 2022 at 11 am, for family and friends.
