Jane LaVoy

Dan McClelland

Jane LaVoy was born December 24, 1946 in Syracuse, N.Y, the daughter of Henry R. and Edith Storch Sivers.

Jane grew up in Fulton, N.Y. and moved to Conklin, N.Y. for high school. Memorable summers were spent at the family’s cottage in the Thousand Islands Park on the St. Lawrence River.

Jane received her bachelor's degree in Child Development from Cornell University and was part of the Centennial class of 1968. Jane received her master's degree in Education from SUNY Cortland in 1969. She held teaching positions in the Binghamton area before relocating in 1973 to Tupper Lake, to teach at Sunmount Developmental Center.

She married Bruce LaVoy on July 31st 1976. When their two boys were young, she was a room mother and school site-based team representative, as well as PTA treasurer for many years. In addition, she was a 4-H leader for eight years and also was a founding mother of the TLC preschool, where she taught the four-year-old class for many eager students.

Afterward, she began her lengthy and enjoyable stint as a substitute teacher at Long Lake Central School. In 1991, she began teaching the New York State Boaters Safety course, at first just to Tupper Lakers and later, to other groups in the region.

In 1992 she joined Boy Scout Troop 23’s Scout Committee (following her oldest son and husband’s involvement) and was soon in charge of that as well as being the Advancement Chairwoman and head of the “Scouting for Food Drive”.

Jane and Bruce twice received the Adirondack Scout Council’s Bedford District Husband and Wife Award. Jane especially enjoyed helping first her son, Loren, and later, a number of other worthy scouts attain their Eagle Scout rank.

In 1998, she became a member of the Tupper Lake Women's Republican Club, acting as the group's treasurer, until the club disbanded. She also worked as an election inspector, a sociable job she enjoyed a lot.

Jane is survived by her husband Bruce, son Loren and daughter-in-law Karen of College Park, MD and their two sons Logan and Kaylon. She is also survived by son Todd and wife Christina of Portsmouth, VA, and their twins - Annika and Pfeiffer, a sister-in-law Arlene Cole Sivers of Owego, N.Y., a sister-in-law, Rosanne LaVoy, of Bolinas, CA, brother Roderick Castle Jr. and his wife Lynn of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and sister Judy McLean and her husband Tim of Fort Walton Beach, FL. Jane is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, Henry and Edith Sivers of Venice, FL and Fine View, NY and her birth father Roderick Castle, Sr. of Madison, N.Y. She was also pre-deceased by her birth mother, Reta Amidon, of Baldwinsville, N.Y. and brother Eric of Owego, NY.

Funeral services will be held on July 15, 2024 at noon at St. Alphonsus Church with Rev. James Teti officiating with burial to follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Calling hours will be held prior to funeral from 10a.m. to noon at Frary Funeral Home with an opportunity for individual remembrances.

Contributions in Mrs. LaVoy's memory can be made to the Tupper Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad. Her mother-in-law, Ann LaVoy, was one of its founders and a lifelong member.
