Nearly 90 take the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot

by Dan McClelland

The 11th annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, which remembers the life and good work of Erin Farkas Dewyea, drew a good crowd of nearly 90 trotters- some at a walking pace and some running.

This was the first year that the holiday event that remembers the late elementary school teacher wasn’t directed by Erin’s parents and family members. This year the administration of the event was turned over to the Kiwanis Club, whose members helped in the past, and town’s recreation department. Mike and Cathy Farkas and Erin’s siblings also helped this year.

Half the proceeds from this year’s event will go to the good work of the Kiwanians here- particularly their work with youth. The other half goes to the recreation department to help offset some of the transportation costs associated with its very busy summer camp program.

Recreation Director Laura Labarge was very pleased with this year’s turnout and the continued support of an event that remembers all the many good things Erin did for her students at L.P. Quinn and the community during her far too brief life here.

The winners of this year’s event who won cash prizes this year were first place female 5K walker ($25 prize) was shared by Hannah Riley and Kate Beaudette; first place 5K male walker ($25) Mike Zande; first place 5K female runner ($50)- Pia Corvjo; first place 5K male runner- Jonah Kendall. There were neither entrants male or female for the 10K run, so no prizes were awarded, but Lynn Nadeau and Kim Higgins shared $50 for the fastest 10K walkers.
