Walter J. Mallon, 78

Walter J. Mallon, 78, of Tupper Lake, passed away at his home on Saturday, July 9, 2016.
Born March 29, 1938 in Brooklyn, he was the son of Walter and Margaret Wynn Mallon.
Walt grew up in Brooklyn. After high school, he worked various jobs as a psychiatric aide, bartender, longshoreman, and truck driver.
He was briefly married to Gail, whose name he had tattooed on his right forearm, but an annulment ended that union.
He was then drafted into the U.S. Army in 1961 serving in Germany during the Viet Nam Conflict, being discharged in 1963.
He married Mary Ann Durante in 1962 and joined the New York City Police Department in 1966, retiring in 1983 due to a job-related injury.
During his early years with the NYPD “he walked the beat,” and participated in many of the New York City parades.
In 1985 Walt married Stella Zuris in Brooklyn. In 1988 they relocated to Tupper Lake. Walt was an active member of the VFW.
He enjoyed boating and being with friends. He was a very generous spirit with a smile and a joke.
He is survived by his wife Stella; daughter, Margaret Peppe and her husband Edward; sons Michael Mallon and his wife Erin; Daniel Durante; Charles Mallon and his wife Janet; stepson Nicholas Perri. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, three great-granddaughters, and a sister, Maureen Keeler and her husband George.
Walter was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Mary Ann; his younger brother Chris; and a sister, Elizabeth.
Calling hours are scheduled for Saturday, August 6 fromnoon to 3 p.m. at the Stuart-Fortune-Keogh funeral home.
Burial will follow at St. Alphonsus cemetery with full military honors and a reception at the VFW Post 3120.
In lieu of flowers those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad or High Peaks Hospice.

Deborah A. Newton, 62

Deborah A. Newton, 62, died Sunday July 24, 2016 at Glens Falls Hospital following a long illness.
Born in Tupper Lake she was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Therese (Gignac) Trudeau.
Debbie was employed as a heavy equipment operator for 20 years from 1984 to 2004 with D.A. Collins- Kubricky Construction Company.
Her hobbies included the love of the outdoors, skiing, snow shoeing, trips to camp Handsome Pond, and her love of animals domestic and wild. She enjoyed simple pleasures hanging out in her garage with her husband listing to music and having a few cold beers.
Debbie will be remembered as a loving wife, sister and friend.
She is survived by her husband Todd Newton of Brant Lake, one brother Jeff (Sue) Trudeau of Piercefield,  mother-in-law and father-in-law Robert and Gertrude Newton of Brant Lake, one brother-in-law Benny Newton of Brant Lake, two sister-in-laws Greta (Roger Manning) House of Brant Lake, Sherry (Charles) Granger of South Glens Falls and many nieces and nephews.
At Debbie’s request there will not be any calling hours or funeral services.

Jeanne VanCour, 92

Jeanne VanCour, 92, of Saratoga Springs, formerly of Tupper Lake, and Ocala, FL, passed on to her eternal reward Thursday, July 21, surrounded by family.
Jeanne was born on the family farm in Lancaster, Ontario to parents Winifred (Leroux) and Aristide Decoeur and was raised in Tupper Lake.  
A graduate of Holy Ghost Academy and Central City Business Institute in Syracuse,  Jeanne married Joseph Victor Real (Ray) Chretien in 1949 and resided in Tupper Lake.
Later, she married Paul VanCour and they lived in Ocala Florida until 1994 when they moved to Saratoga Springs, N.Y.   
A very active person, Jeanne excelled at everything she did, especially her culinary and hosting skills.  She loved to entertain company and her door was open to everyone.  Jeanne made many long-lasting friendships wherever she lived.
Jeanne is survived by three sons, Thomas (Margaret) Chretien, Gerry (Carol) Chretien and Paul (Julie) Chretien; three grandchildren, Chad Chretien, Stacy (Billy) Wilson and Corrie (Anthony) Nelson; four great-grandchildren, Morgyn Britt, Alexis (Nick Glasgow) Britt, Isaak Britt and Natalie Wilson; one great-great granddaughter, Aleigha Glasgow; one brother, Gerald (Gloria) Decoeur, of Syracuse, NY; and many nieces, nephews and cousins in the USA and Canada.
She was predeceased by her parents and spouses.
There will be no calling hours.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Clements Church, 231 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.  on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 10a.m.
Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Tupper Lake.  A memorial service will be held in Tupper Lake at the convenience of the family.
The family requests that any memorial donations be given to The Wesley Health Care Center, Inc., 131 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, or to the St. Clements Parish where Jeanne was a Eucharistic Minister.

A graveside service for Jordan “Ichabod” Soucy will take place at 2p.m. on July 30, 2016 at St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Tupper Lake for family and friends.
A gathering will follow at the Soucy residence at 26 Pleasant Ave. All are welcome.

A graveside memorial service for Theresa Racine who passed away on August 24, 2015 will be held on Saturday, July 30 at 11 a.m. at the St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Marshall J. "Boogie" Godin, 74

Word has been received of the death of Marshall J. "Boogie" Godin.  Marshall passed away at his winter home in Port Charlotte Florida on July 22 with his wife Debbie, daughter Paula and son Darryl by his side. 
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 31 from 3p.m. to 7p.m. at Stuart-Fortune-Keough funeral home in Tupper Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, August 1 at 11a.m. at St. Alphonsus church.
 

Robert A. McLear, 61

Robert A. McLear, 61, of Pine Street, Tupper Lake, died Thursday, July 07, 2016 at his home following a long illness.
Born in Saranac Lake, New York on January 2, 1955, he was the son of Ralph and Beulah (Demars) McLear.
Robert married Mary Cole August 19, 2000 in Buffalo, New York.
Robert had been employed as a truck driver from many years for various companies and most recently worked as a bus driver for Franklin County Public Transportation for several years until he had to retire due to serious health issues.  Robert was an avid Nascar fan and was a member of the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad.
He is survived by his wife Mary McLear of Tupper Lake, three children Stacie (Daryl) Feeterman of Tonawanda, Robert (Chrystal) McLear of Tonawanda and Geoffrey (Jennifer) McLear of Amherst, three step children Carl (Melissa) Blenski of Cuba, N,Y,, Kimberly Blenski of Buffalo and April Blenski of Mt. Morris, N,Y,, one brother Eddie McLear of Tennessee, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren several nieces and nephews, his mother-in-law Mary Lou Ransom of Florida, and several brother-in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his father and his mother and one nephew Alex McLear.

Loretta (Lou) Jourdan, 89

Loretta (Lou) Jourdan, 89, passed away after a short illness, July 5th where she lived at Edna Tina Wilson Living center in Rochester N.Y. Her granddaughter, Katie Lagnese, was by her side as she passed.
Lou was born in Tupper Lake in 1927 to Herbert and Beatrice Kentile.  She attended Tupper Lake schools and worked at the OWD.  She married Thomas Jourdan from Brooklyn N.Y.  He was a patient at Sunmount, when it was a veteran’s hospital.
Shortly after their marriage they lived in Brooklyn for five years, where Tom attended school to become an X-ray technician and Lou worked in the hospital cafeteria.  With that certificate in hand, they returned to Tupper Lake where Tom returned to Sunmount as an employee this time. 
Lou had various jobs in Tupper Lake besides being a homemaker. She was a teacher’s aide in the elementary school when it was part of the high school and the job she held the longest and retired from, was as a cafeteria server in the High School.  She loved the day-to-day chats with the kids and enforced extra vegetables on anyone who gave her lip.  Over the years Loretta enjoyed family get togethers and the perpetual exchange of Tupperware containers. She often talked of an exercise classed she attended.  From the sound of it there was more talk than exercise and that was the point.  She also enjoyed visits and trips to Rochester to see her daughter; Arlene and grandchildren; Nick and Katie.
Lou cared for her mother Beatrice Kentile in her last year of life with gracious help by her nieces; Cherie Roy, Cindy Kentile, Barb Casagrain and Mary Beth Roberge as well as High Peaks hospice. 
In 2009 she moved to Rochesterto be closer to her daughter and her family and lived at Fleming Point,  an independent living facility.  She enjoyed the meals and daily activities there and was in the middle of everything. 
Her favorite activity was balloon volleyball which was always was followed by trash talking and debating the score.  Being so close to family meant she had Sunday dinner with her daughter every week and was on hand with the birth of all three of her grand-children: Max Lagnese, Lily Lagnese and Zack Lagnese. As her health became poor, she moved to Edna Tina Wilson Living center, a beautiful facility with many daily activities.  Here the staff regularly recalled stories to her daughter of the various things her Mom said.  The time spent working in the cafeteria had trained her well.  She always had a quick comeback and a smile on her face.
She had various health challenges and steamrolled right through them always with family on her side.  Finally in the end, it seemed she picked her time and a minor infection claimed her life.
She is survived by her brother: Herbert (Bucky) Kentile, her daughter Arlene Jourdan and boyfriend Steve Majewski, her grand-son Nick Nettleton and wife Erin, grand-daughter Kate Lagnese and husband Matt and three great-grandchildren: Maximus, Lilyana and Zachary Lagnese.
She was predeceased by her father, Herbert Kentile, mother, Beatrice Kentile, brother, Richard Kentile and sister, Arlene Campbell.
Calling hours were held  Monday, July 11  at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral home, followed by mass at St. Alphonsus Church.   Burial was in St. Alphonsus cemetery.
The family request no flowers, but instead if you feel you must, a donation in Loretta’s name be given to various organizations in the Tupper Lake area:
High Peaks Hospice that helped out when she cared her mother, Meals on Wheels that graciously provided meals for her mother Tupper Lake Volunteer ambulance who transported both Loretta and her husband Tom when they needed it and of course the Tupper Lake Fire Department, which thankfully they never had to call.

A memorial service to honor the lives of William (Bill) Ogden and Suzanne (Moody) Ogden will be held on July 16, from 1pm to 4pm in the community room at the Emergency Services Building on Santa Clara Ave in Tupper Lake.

Robert M. Peets, 42

Robert M. Peets, 42, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, June 22 while working in Duxbury, Massachusetts. 
Born on July 20, 1973 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Paul Peets and Joy LaGray. 
Rob attended Tupper Lake schools where he played baseball, football and hockey.  He worked for many local contractors and over the last five years and traveled throughout many states for large contracting firms. 
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending his free time doing what he loved. 
He is survived by his grandmother Leona Bombard, parents Paul and Janelle Peets, brothers Jay of Tupper Lake and Jesse of Baldwinsville. Rob also leaves behind a large extended family of many aunts, uncles and cousins. 
Calling hours are tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, July 5  from 4p.m. until7 p.m. at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough funeral home. 
A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 6 at 10a.m.

Elizabeth “Jean” Merrihew Smith

Elizabeth Jean Merrihew Smith, born on April 14, 1931 in Tupper Lake, passed away on June 18, 2016 at the age of 85 at Adirondack Medical Center with her family by her side.
“Jean” was the first born daughter of Theodore Wilfred and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Barrett.  She grew up in Tupper Lake, then moved to Plattsburgh after getting married, where she began her family of eight children. 
Jean moved back to Tupper Lake after losing her husband in 1965 to raise her children. She was a hardworking, loving mother who always put her kids first.  She was a real people person, and would help anyone whenever she could.
Jean worked in many of the Park Street establishments over the years before branching out on her own with her beloved “Buttons & Bows” Shop.
Later in life Jean worked in the Foster Grandparent Program where she thrived for years, once again exemplifying her hard work and love for children.
Jean enjoyed reading, jig saw puzzles, and sewing in her spare time. Her hobbies often took her late into the night hours.
She was predeceased by her husband Fred P. Merrihew and daughter Patricia and second husband, Robert Smith.
She is survived by her sister Mary “Pat” LaMere; seven children and their spouses -James and Carolyn Merrihew, Susan and Michael Moore, Michael and Tina Merrihew, Theodore Merrihew and Melissa DeVit, John and Nancy Merrihew, Timothy and Carol Merrihew and Elizabeth Merrihew and Candide Valadares
She also leaves behind 14 amazing grandchildren; and nine beautiful great grandchildren.
Family and friends were invited to call on the Merrihew Family on Tuesday June 21 from 4p.m. to 7p.m. at Stuart Fortune Keough Funeral Home.
A Catholic service in celebration of her life will be held at St. Alphonsus Church today at 10 a.m. (Wednesday, June 22). The interment will follow the service at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Mercy Living Center and Adirondack Medical Center for their quality and compassionate care.

Daniel Barton, 48

Daniel Barton, 48, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, June 15 at his home. 
Born on July 12, 1967 in Tupper Lake, he was the son of Richard and Joan Oshier Barton. 
Dan attended Tupper Lake schools and was married to Amy Burnham on June 14, 1986.  
Dan worked at the Tupper Lake Veneer and later various contractors including Larkins, Skip Kenniston and Jeff Denis.  He was also a self-employed carpenter. 
He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. 
He is survived by his wife Amy, sons John of Tupper Lake and Scott Barton of Saranac Lake, daughter Kellyn Barton of Piercefield, grandchildren; Alanah Sutton, Scott Barton Jr. and Logan Barton.  Also surviving are brothers; Steve, William, Michael, Jason LeBbeuf, sisters Laurie Plowe, Janice Heelein, Deanna Lamoy and several nieces and nephews. 
Calling hours were held Tuesday, June 21 at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough funeral home.

Edith P Smith

Edith passed away at Maplewood Campus in Canton, N.Y. on May 12, 2016.  She was a resident of Long Lake, for over 60 years prior to her moving to Maplewood in 2015 to be closer to her daughter.
Edith was born September 2, 1929 in Rowlandsville, Maryland to the late Clyde and Pearl (Regan) Sevey. She married Richard P. Smith of Colton, NY, together they shared 49 years of marriage before his passing on October 10, 1999.
She is survived by two daughters and one son. Virginia and (Jerry) Fisher of Colton,  Barbara and (Joseph) Marquay of Enfield, N.H., Wayne and (Diane) Smith of Aurora, Colorado; two sisters, Mildred White of South Colton and Marie Collins of Gloversville; eight grandchildren: Toby Fisher; Felicia and (Bill) Bonno; Heather Fisher and (Ed Simser); Justin and (Lori) Fisher; Yvonne Gabourel; Joseph Marquay Jr; Brenton Smith and Kenny Smith; 21 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.
Edith enjoyed traveling and camping with family and friends along with dancing and listening to country music. She enjoyed crocheting and doing various types of embroidery work. Over the years she gave away much of her beautiful handiwork to family and friends as gifts which are treasured. She also enjoyed cooking, doing puzzles, watching Wheel Of Fortune, the Walton’s, Hallmark movies and cooking shows.
Per Edith's request a memorial service will not be held. The family suggests that friends wishing to remember her make donations to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley, 6805 US Hwy 11, Potsdam, NY 13676.

Sandra M. (Rolley) Sovey

Sandra M. (Rolley) Sovey,  59, of Tupper Lake  was granted her angel wings on Saturday, May 7, 2016.  Her final days were spent surrounded by family.  Many were touched by Sandra . Her bright smile and sense of humor was appreciated by all who knew her. She gave us all such courage and hope and reminded us of the preciousness of life. 
She loved to go fishing with her best friend, attending church, shopping, gardening traveling and helping others. 
 Sandra was born on August 11, 1956  in Tupper Lake.
She worked for New York State for over 20 years. She studied at NCCC and received her LPN.
Sandra  is survived by her husband, Thomas Sovey, her children Matthew Rolley and partner Ashley Foulds of Norwich N.Y., Narissa McFadden and David McFadden Jr. of Tupper Lake, Paul and Virginia Sovey of Mechanicville N.Y. and David Sovey and Judy of Saratoga N.Y.
She is also survived by her siblings Curtis and Linda Rolley, Roseann McIntyre, Randall and Martha Rolley, Patricia Gregware, Diane Bryan and Joanne Rolley, her grandchildren Ryan Parent, Rikki Martin, Paul Sovey and Claire Sovey,  and many nieces and nephews.
She is pre deceased by Her parents Curtis Rolley and Madeline Ward Rolley and her brothers Ward Rolley and Michael Rolley.
There will be no calling hours at her request.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m.   Friday, May 13 at the  Stuart- Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, a reception  will follow at the Market Place.

Albert P. “Percy” Trombley

WWII Veteran
 Albert P. Trombley of Tupper Lake died this past week at the age of 90 with family and friends by his side.
From 1941-1946 during World War II Albert was a 1st class gunner's mate, serving on the USS Alexandria, and the USS Queen Elizabeth.
He married Lorraine T. Trombley on November 29, 1950, and startedhis lifein Tupper Lake.
He was a loving husband, devoted father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.
“Percy” loved greeting his neighborhood furry friends, loved riding his scooter to eat his breakfast at the Lumber Jack where he would see all his old buddies.
He loved going to garage sales with his son Greg. He enjoyed spending time with his friend Dave Francisco. He loved bullhead fishing with his neighbor Danny, ice fishing with his granddaughter Breanna.
Percy was an avid hunter, always looking for that 10-pointer He enjoyed the outdoors in every way.
He always had a big heart and would give you the world if he could. He devoted time caring for his favorite cat.
He always greeted everyone with a smile, remained pleasant, witty and never let his disability hinder his way of living right up until the end of his extraordinary life.
He was an icon around Tupper Lake and will be missed by some many.
He is survived by one daughter Tina, three sons Gregory and his wife Venetia; Richard, and John; one sister Theresa Riley; one brother Robert Trombley; nine grandchildren Christian, Ryan and his wife Elizabeth, Matthew. Jason, Trevor and his wife Amber, Corey, Breanna, David and Richie, three great-grandchildren Merceedes, Jamira and Aiden
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, his parents Albert and Regina Trombley, his brothers Louis and Charles and his sisters Nita St. Onge, Elizabeth Grucelski, Rita Pentlen, Dora Hayes, Bernardette LaBarge, Florence Bressette and Patricia Trombley.
Calling hours were held on Monday, May 9 at the Stuart Fortune Keough Funeral Home.
A military burial will be celebrated at a later date.

Reta Shumway, 85

      Reta Shumway passed away peacefully at her home in Piercefield on Tuesday, April 5th.
Reta was born to Raymond and Mary (Hatch) Shurtleff on June 25th 1931 at Shurtleff House Hotel in Shurtleff, New York.
      Reta married Donald Shumway on October 7th 1950 at Holy Name Church.
She was town justice for 16 years and worked as a staff accountant for Ernest Wood and later for Raymond Martin until her retirement.
      Reta made her home welcome to family and friends.
      She was predeceased by her husband Donald in 1999 and her brother Donald in 2004.
      She is survived by her children Susan (Philip) Ferrara, Ann Shumway, Raymond Shumway, granddaughters Shauni and Alexa Shumway and daughter in law Judy Shumway.
A calling hour was held Monday, April 11th at 10am at St. Alphonsus Church followed by a funeral mass at 11am.  Burial will be in Gale cemetery.

Harold E. Blake, 87

Harold E. Blake, 87, passed away, Saturday, April 2 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
 Born May 25, 1928 in Lansing, MI, he was the son of Nicholas and Laverna (Clark) Blake. He attended public schools in the Detroit area and then the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
He had an early career as an operative with Pinkertons, and as a counter-intelligence Special Agent in Germany.
He was married to Lavern Gibson of Sacramento, California in 1955 at Lake Lugano, Switzerland.
After returning to the United States with his wife, he became a Michigan State licensed electrical contractor. He sold his businesses in Michigan in 1963 and moved his family to Florida.
Lavern passed away in 1993. He returned to work as a career Civil Servant, working as an mechanic and engineer with the US Postal Service development and implementation of automated mail processing equipment and in Postal Data communication.
He was a life member Freemason and a member of Egypt Shrine, Tampa.
Since his retirement from the Federal Service in 1988, he became active as a researcher in natural disasters and medical support. His life activities were principally as an electrical engineer and investigative researcher.
 He recently married his longtime dear friend, Gloria St. Onge. Upon moving to Tupper Lake, Gloria and Harold where avid hikers enjoying the outdoors and researching every aspect of the Adirondacks including the APA which he didn't really agree with. He is survived by his wife Gloria St. Onge of Tupper Lake, four children; Daniel E. Blake of Rogers, Arkansas, Wayne J. Blake of Plant City, FL., Delores E. Darpel of Covington, KY., and Diane E. Mannis of Dade City, FL., Also surviving are several grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
 He was pre-deceased by his first wife Lavern, one son Eugene, one brother Donald and a sister Doris Osbourn.
Calling hours are scheduled for Thursday, April 7 from 2p.m. to 4p.m. at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough funeral home followed by a funeral service at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Chapel Hill Gardens in Dade City, Florida.
