Russell Albert Cronin
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Russell Albert Cronin, who left us on Thursday morning, May 22nd at the recently celebrated age of 88. He was a proud Ohioan, a loving and supportive family man, a vigorously loyal friend, and a sailor to the core.
Russell was born on May 8, 1937 in Cambridge, Ohio to parents Emil and Grace Cronin. At the young age of 12, he began delivering milk and newspapers in Cambridge before and after school hours. During summers, he established his strong work ethic at his uncle’s farm. At 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy towards the end of the Korean War. Serving our country with honor and distinction for 22 years during the Vietnam war as a Gunner’s Mate on various vessels, also stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, Poughkeepsie, New York, and San Diego, California. After retiring from the US Navy, he worked for 25 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in shop 38. He was known for his ability to humor a crowd with stories from the sea and beating 4 year-olds at checkers because learning to lose is an under-appreciated skill. His cribbage skills were legendary, having taught 3 generations the love and strategy of the game. One of his greatest joys was exploring the vast beauty of the national parks, sharing his adventuresome spirit with family and friends.
Russell is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sally; his children, Robyn Butler (Bobby), Russell Cronin Jr. (Michael), and Raymond Cronin (Jennifer); his grandchildren, Bobby Butler (Laura) and Courtenay Cronin; and his great-grandchildren, Garrett Butler and Finley Butler; and his sisters Hazel Leep and Darlene Meiser (Gary). He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Grace Cronin, and three brothers Kenneth, James, and David.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 1- 2:00 pm with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 pm at Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kempsville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Chartway Promise Foundation in the name of Russell Albert Cronin’s memory.
Russell will be cremated and returned to the sea he had sailed for many years.
As the waves carry him once more, he will rest in the embrace of the water as his spirit sails on.
