Amanda “Mary” Thwaits, 37
Amanda “Mary” Thwaits of Plattsburgh, 37, born on August 9, 1987 to Reginald Thwaits and Debbie Papier, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at the UVM Medical Center. She spent the final days of her life surrounded by numerous family members and friends whose lives she had touched throughout her lifetime.
Mary graduated from Ausable Valley High School in 2005. She was a multi-sport athlete in her teen years and played soccer, softball and volleyball. Mary then went on to earn Bachelor’s degrees from SUNY Plattsburgh in Business & Business Economics, and Marketing & Entrepreneurship with a Minor in Finance. She graduated in 2009 and was a beloved and active member of her Sorority, Alpha Epsilon Phi - Phi Tau Chapter. In her professional life Mary held several positions including working as a parts buyer for Bombardier and Student Manager at Broad Street Commons in Plattsburgh.
Mary would often be found being in service to others through fundraising and volunteering for local causes. One of her many successful fundraising efforts was a kickball tournament benefiting the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center in Plattsburgh.
Mary loved to travel, and spent much of her time with family and friends. She was always up for a road trip to visit a loved one, and would be eager to try something new and find new adventures along the way. She was a lover of the outdoors and would spend time in nature kayaking, hiking, camping at Cole’s Creek and enjoying the simple pleasure of the wind blowing in her hair as she took rides in her Mustang with the music playing loud enough for any passersby to enjoy along with her. She’d often bring her dearly loved fur babies, Wyatt and Zara, as her passengers on these drives. Mary took immense pride in Zara’s training to be a service dog, knowing she would bring peace and comfort to others. She also loved the fall and cheering on her favorite NFL team, the New England Patriots.
One of Mary’s greatest joys and accomplishments in her life was being the best Aunt to her niece and nephew, Hailey and Easton. She loved spending time with them whenever she could: going on shopping adventures, getting pedicures for back to school, and having fun at the pumpkin patch. When she wasn't doing the girly things, she would get right down in the dirt and enjoy truck time with Easton. (a.k.a. Eastie Beastie).
Mary loved meeting people and made friends wherever she went. We would always ask her after she had a conversation with someone: “Who was that, Mary?” and she would respond, “I don't know, I just met them!” Mary never met a stranger and always made people feel welcomed in her presence.
Mary is survived by her father, Reginald (Kelly) of NH, mother Debbie Papier (Don) of Plattsburgh, Sister Stephanie Lasher (Dustin) of Morrisonville, Niece Hailey Lasher (aka mini Mary), Nephew Easton Lasher, Grandparents: Robert & Mary Duhaime of Tupper Lake, Aunts and Uncles: Donna & Ron Gieger (SC), Sue and Mickey Desmarais (TL), Ed and Sue Duhaime (Cadyville), Roberta Duhaime (Morrisonville), Jon Duhaime (TL), Nina & Bryan Lincoln (Ausable), Rene & Rob Baer (Jay), Randy and Gaby Thwaits (Lake Clear); and many other cousins and friends too numerous to name.
