Richard Shinnock, 91
Richard G. Shinnock, 91, of Massena, NY, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Per his wishes, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Massena. There will be no public calling hours or services.
He was born on May 1, 1934, in Tupper Lake, to the late George and Nina (Lovell) Shinnock.
He attended Tupper Lake High School, Richard went on to serve in the United States Air Force, receiving an honorable discharge in 1955. In 1960, he began a distinguished career in law enforcement with the New York State Police, earning the title of Zone Sergeant, retiring in 1990.
He went on to start the police force on the Akwesasne Reservation and proudly served as its first Police Chief. Richard married Jeannette Peets on September 16, 1956, at Saint Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake, NY with the late Rev. Msgr. D. J. Brault presiding.
He is survived by his three daughters: Glenda MacPherson, Karla Flynn, and Serena (Stephen) Krywanczyk, all of Massena. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Ashley Flynn of Herriman, UT; Eric MacPherson; Lindsay MacPherson and her companion Seth Blair; Aaron Krywanczyk; and Allie Krywanczyk, all of Massena. Richard was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: Whitney and Brody Flynn-Contreras, and Gavin Blair.
Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jeannette, on February 13, 2024, and a granddaughter Kristina “Kristie” Flynn in 2021.
