June Zande of Tupper Lake passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at her home.
She was born Feb. 11, 1927 in Cranberry Lake to Katharine and George MacAleese. June attended the local school and graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1944. She attended Champlain Valley Nursing School in Plattsburgh, graduating as a registered nurse in 1947.
June was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tupper Lake for nine years before it transitioned into Sunmount DDSO, where she worked for 15 years until her retirement. She earned the respect of her co-workers and supervisors for her exemplary performance and work ethic. She was even nominated by her peers and awarded “Employee of the Year” at a ceremony in Albany.
She married Augusto “Augie” Zande on Oct. 4, 1952. Together, they owned and operated Trail’s End on Raquette River Drive during the years their three daughters were growing up. At that time, it included their home, four rental cabins, boat docks and a bar/restaurant. They made many lasting friendships stemming from their business.
June was an active member of the United Community Church in Tupper Lake. Over the years, she has held the titles of deacon, elder, and treasurer.
Always having a love for art and learning, June was active in Tupper Lake’s founding Arts Group. She enjoyed working in oils, acrylics, watercolors, chalks and pencil.
Surviving are her three daughters: Donna Mathes of Syracuse, Maureen Zande of Tupper Lake and Carrie Riley of Childwold; granddaughters: Tiffany Wolf of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Brittany Proulx of Tupper Lake; grandsons: Zachary, Dominic and Gabriel Mathes of Syracuse, Richard Riley of Tupper Lake, and Noah and Jacob Sabo of Tupper Lake; three great-grandchildren: Denver Proulx of Tupper Lake and Tallulah and Waylon Wolf of Colorado Springs, Colo.
June also stayed close with her nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Augie, her parents and her sister Elizabeth Fuller.
Her family would like to thank Tupper Lake Police Department officers Kris Clark and Gage Madore and the Tupper Lake Volunteer Ambulance and Emergency Squad for the excellent care they provided June in their time of need.
A date for the graveside service in Lakeview Cemetery in Tupper Lake has been set for Wednesday, April 28 at 12pm.
In lieu of flowers, June requested that donations be made to the Adirondack Health Foundation or the Tupper Lake Volunteer Ambulance and Emergency Squad.
