Free Tax Help is Back

That time of year has arrived—could you use help doing your income taxes?  The Tax-Aide program is back in Tupper Lake, for its sixth year running, and offers just that.

Administered through the AARP Foundation, Tax-Aide provides IRS-certified and trained volunteers who will meet with taxpayers and prepare and submit their federal and state income tax returns for the past year, due by April 15.  The program is open to all taxpayers, regardless of age, income levels, or whether or not they are AARP members.  The local team, which has grown since its pre-COVID early days, will also meet with taxpayers in Saranac Lake.

How to get started?  Information packets, with forms and instructions to fill out prior to your appointment, will become available at the Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake libraries around mid-January.  Once you have your packets and required documents, call Tax-Aide team leader Kevin L. at 518-359-5012 to schedule an appointment.  While there are some types of very complex returns the team is not authorized to prepare, the initial discussion with Kevin should clarify if yours is one they can do.

The appointments will be held on Sunday afternoons at the Tupper Lake library (Feb. 2 through April 6) and on Saturday afternoons at the Saranac Lake library (Feb. 22 through April 5).  Taxpayers will have to come on two consecutive weekends—the first, to have the return prepared, the second to review and finalize it.

The Tupper Lake team looks forward to serving you!
