Bandshell opens with large crowds and great acts

Tupper Lake's band Night School was the first entertainment group to play on what Mayor Paul Maroun has dubbed the Sunset Stage in the Lions new bandshell last Wednesday as part of a summer-long series of concerts and performances brought to Flanders Park by Tupper Arts and the Village of Tupper Lake. The band members include (from left) Micah Tyo, Jay Martin, Ian Roantree, Andrew and Ben McClelland. The menu of rock tunes served up by the local boys pleased the pallets of about 300 local listeners, relaxing in their lawn chairs and on blankets on the terraces in front of the brand new performance venue, as shown below. The second group to perform there as part of Tupper Arts' Summer Sunset Series was put together by Tupper Arts mainstays Liz and George Cordes and their associates in High Peaks Opera, past and present members of the local Red and Black Players, and the female barbershop quartet called Fourtissimo- all coming together that night as “Making a Raquette.” The show featured many strong solo and group numbers, many of them very appropriate to bring in America's Independence Day Thursday with tunes like “This Land is Your Land” and “God Bless America. A number of popular show tunes were also performed. Among those on the Sunset Stage were (not in order) Carol Lamb, Deanna Courtney, Gretchen Reid, Danielle LaMere, Karyn Ryan, Harriet Connelly, Hannah Zehr, Kirsten Denis, Kathleen Lefebvre, Stephanie Fortune, Michell Jensen, Matt Varden, Ian Gillis and Noah Cordes.

The happiest July Fourth baby to grace the new lawns overlooking the Flanders Park bandshell Wednesday evening was Shannon and Josh Trembley's third boy, Tommy, brother to Frank and Louie. The lad came decked for the occasion. More photos on our web site this week.
The evening produced a vivid sunset for the first night at the bandshell, as shown below.
