Officer Matthew Dana named new police sergeant here

by Dan McClelland
The village board last week promoted Matthew Dana to the position of sergeant in the village police department, on the recommendation of Police Chief Eric Proulx.
Chief Proulx told the board at its monthly meeting Wednesday the new sergeant's position would become permanent when he passes the upcoming county civil service examination for the position.
β€œHe's very qualified and very intelligent,” according to the chief, who said he looked forward to working with Matt in his new administrative role.
The appointment brings back to two the number of full-time and active sergeants with the local PD.  The department has been without a second full-time sergeant since April of 2015 when Sgt. Sean Stradley was injured attempting to subdue an unruly individual at Stewart's Shop here.  In past months, to cover for Sgt. Stradley, the board hired retired Police Officer Geoff Carmichael as a part-time sergeant.
Sgt. Dana was reportedly the lone candidate to apply for the full-time position.  There was no candidate on the county civil service list.
The appointment was made effective that day.
Sgt. Dana was hired by the villagein 2012 as a part-time officer and his position became full-time in March, 2013.
He is a graduate of Tupper Lake High School and SUNY Canton.
